  3. ***** Important Notices *****
  4.  
  5. * After you exit this readme file, the MPC Wizard Setup
  6. program will automatically run the Video for Windows
  7. setup program, which installs version 1.1a of the VFW
  8. runtime player on your computer. We strongly suggest that
  9. you install the runtime, as some of the MPC Wizard tests
  10. require them. However, if you decide not to do so, click
  11. EXIT after entering the VFW Setup program. Should you want
  12. to run it at a later date, go to the Windows Program
  13. Manager, pull down the FILE menu, select RUN, and type
  14. "D:\VFWSETUP\VFWSETUP" (where D is the letter of your 
  15. CD-ROM drive). Even if you have already loaded a version 
  16. of VFW, you may still need to run this setup program to 
  17. load the SuperMatch Cinepak(TM) decompressor. This setup 
  18. program will not overwrite more recent versions of the 
  19. same files if they already exist on your hard disk.
  20.  
  21. * The MPC Wizard 3.0 requires either 4 MB RAM and 4 MB of 
  22. virtual memory, or 8 MB RAM. We highly recommend at least 
  23. 8 MB of RAM for speediest performance. If you have less
  24. than 8 MB RAM, you should enable virtual memory, which
  25. uses a your hard disk as RAM.
  26.  
  27. To enable Virtual Memory:
  28.  
  29. 1) Verify that Windows is running in 386-Enhanced mode. 
  30.    Note that Windows for Workgroups always runs in 
  31.    386-Enhanced mode. If you're running Windows 3.1, pull 
  32.    down the HELP menu to "About Program Manager..." and 
  33.    see if it says "386 Enhanced mode." To launch Windows 
  34.    in 386-Enhanced mode, type "WIN /3" at the DOS prompt 
  35.    and press Return. 
  36. 2) Go to the Windows Program Manager, open the Main group, 
  37.    open the Control Panel, and open the 386-Enhanced 
  38.    Control Panel.  
  39. 3) Click the "Virtual Memory" button on the right.
  40. 4) Click "Change."
  41. 5) Set a permanent swap file. Set the new size to the size
  42.    recommended by Windows. Make sure the new size is at 
  43.    least 4 MB.
  44. 6) Click "OK".
  45. 7) When you see the message "Are you sure you want to make 
  46.    changes to virtual memory settings?" click "Yes".
  47. 8) Restart Windows.
  48.  
  49. You can remove this swap file at any time in the future by 
  50. returning to the 386-Enhanced Control Panel.

  52. * If you find that you are unable to print the SoftKey
  53. Product Catalog Order Form using the Catalog's PRINT
  54. button, do the following:
  55.  
  56. 1) Click the Catalog's COPY button to place the
  57. form in the Windows Clipboard.
  58. 2) Paste the form into a text editor (like Windows
  59. Notepad), and print from the text editor.

  71. Welcome to SoftKey International's MPC Wizard(TM) version 
  72. 3.0! Thank you for your purchase. The MPC Wizard was 
  73. produced to help owners of multimedia PCs correctly 
  74. configure their systems. The CD contains tests for MPC 
  75. compatibility, as well as the largest collection of 
  76. Windows(TM) 3.1 drivers on a single disc. Many new 
  77. features have been added to version 3 of this popular 
  78. CD-ROM title, including:
  79.    
  80.      * Ability to test CD-ROM drive data transfer rate 
  81.        with SMARTDrive caching or not caching the CD drive.
  82.  
  83.      * Speed tests for graphics devices.
  84.      
  85.      * Ability to play your own movies in the Video for 
  86.        Windows tests.
  87.  
  88.      * Improved CD audio test.
  89.      
  90.      * Graphics device information reporter that works from 
  91.        within the Wizard.

  109. Instructions for Using the MPC Wizard
  110. -------------------------------------

  112. It's easy to navigate through the MPC Wizard. Click one of 
  113. the big buttons on the left to go to any of the program's 
  114. main sections. Then read the information contained in the 
  115. section's text window. Some sections have buttons at the 
  116. bottom half of the screen that let you go to a sub-section,
  117. perform a test, get troubleshooting tips, etc. These
  118. buttons are explained in each section's text window. When 
  119. you want to move on to another main section, just click 
  120. another one of the big buttons on the left. Click the Exit
  121. button to quit the MPC Wizard.
  122.  
  123. You can also navigate through the program using the 
  124. keyboard. A rectangular dotted line indicates the button 
  125. that has the focus. Use the TAB key to move the focus to 
  126. the button you want to choose. Then choose the button by 
  127. pressing the ENTER key. Many buttons also have
  128. accelerator keys, which are indicated when one of the 
  129. letters in the button label is underlined. Simultaneously 
  130. press the Alt key and the key for the underlined letter to 
  131. choose a button.

  133. When you're reading text in a text window, you can use the 
  134. following keys:
  135.  
  136.   * PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keys to jump through several 
  137.     lines of text,
  138.   * HOME and END keys to go to the beginning or end of the 
  139.     text.

  141. The drivers on the MPC Wizard CD are provided by SoftKey
  142. International as a public service. They were the latest 
  143. ones given to us by graphics, sound, and CD-ROM device 
  144. manufacturers when this disc was produced, and are located 
  145. in the \DRIVERS directory of the CD. Please follow the 
  146. instructions in the FIND A DRIVER section of the MPC 
  147. Wizard before attempting to install any drivers on your
  148. system.

  154. The rights to the programs on the CD are owned by their 
  155. respective manufacturers and are provided "AS IS" 
  156. exclusively for their customers. They may not be 
  157. redistributed in any form (including on a BBS) without the
  158. express written permission of the manufacturer. SoftKey 
  159. International Inc. disclaims all warranties, expressed or 
  160. implied, including merchantability and fitness for
  161. a particular purpose.

  163. SoftKey International will supply technical support for 
  164. the MPC Wizard program included on the MPC Wizard CD. 
  165. However, SoftKey will NOT provide technical support for 
  166. any of the drivers distributed on the disc. If you 
  167. encounter problems with any driver, please contact the 
  168. specific manufacturer. A main, BBS, or technical support 
  169. number for each driver manufacturer is contained in a
  170. README.TXT file located in the manufacturer's subdirectory 
  171. in the \DRIVERS directory. If a manufacturer requested 
  172. that we include demos or utilities with its driver, these 
  173. programs can also be found in that manufacturer's 
  174. respective subdirectory.

  176. Users of Quarterdeck's QEMM, MS-DOS's EMM386.EXE, or 
  177. another expanded memory manager who are installing new 
  178. graphics drivers may need to add an EXCLUDE switch to the 
  179. line that loads the program in their AUTOEXEC.BAT. See 
  180. your memory manager's documentation for details.

  182. If necessary, see your "Windows User's Guide" for more 
  183. information on installing drivers not supplied with 
  184. Windows. Windows 3.1 users installing graphics drivers can 
  185. also check the section "Using Specific Display Adapters 
  186. with Windows Version 3.1" in the file README.WRI,
  187. located in the Windows directory.

  190. are other drivers or features you would like to see
