à 6.6èAdjective Dependent Clauses
ä:èUnderline the adjective dependent clauses in the
sentences in the Example.
âS:
#ëThe man ╕who saved my life╗ is seated next to the bank president.
#ëAt the time ╕when I was a child╗, the government was not in debt.
éS The following is a list of relative pronouns that can intro-
#duce dependent clauses in a complex sentence: ╖who, whom (in whom, for
#╖whom, of whom, by whom, against whom, with whom, through whom, about
#╖whom), whose (in whose), which (in which, for which, of which, by
#╖which, against which, with which, through which, about which), that,
#╖where, when╗.ïAdjective clauses are also introduced by the subordi-
nate conjunctions When and Where.ïUnlike adverb dependent clauses,
adjective dependent clauses normally come directly after the noun or
pronoun they modify.ïNote that although the subordinating conjunctions
#╖when╗ and ╖where ╗can introduce adverb dependent clauses, ╖when ╗and ╖
#╖where ╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗can also introduce an adjective dependent clause.ïIn ╖
#╖The area where I work is rather small, where I work ╗is an adjective
dependent clause because it identifies which area that person is talking
about.ïNotice that an adjective dependent clause, because it comes
directly after the noun or pronoun it modifies, will often separate
#the subject from the verb, as ╖where I work ╗separates the subject ╖area
#from the verb form ╖is.ï╗The following are examples of some relative
pronouns introducing adjective dependent clauses.ïNotice that in each
case, the underlined adjective dependent clause directly follows the
#noun or pronoun it modifies.ïThe banker ╕who roped a bronco╗ is my
#neighbor.ïWill the orange grove ╕that froze╗ renew itself?ïThe cause
#╕for which we fought╗ was worth the slaughter.ïThe creature ╕against
#╕whom we struggled╗ finally went back to his rotting planet.
