Wool processing services
by: Elaine Benfatto
I got a message recently from Deborah
Pulliam, who writes alot for Spin-Off.
She's trying to put together a new
article reviewing wool processing
services, and she's eager to have
information from anyone about costs,
quality of final product, and costs of
the service(s) they've used. If you
want to participate, please leave a
message for me here in the forum, and
I'll forward it to her. Or you could
write to her directly at Box 667,
Castine, ME 04421.
Thanks alot in advance!

Elaine, may I pass your note on to my
spinning guild. Several people have
had a bad experience and it might be
nice to get the word out somehow.

I'm sure Deborah would really
appreciate the information.

I've used a couple different carding
services, and been very happy with the
results. I've found some to be better
at one item, and other to be better at
a different one.
Did you want the details listed here?
Or did you have some sort of survey
form you wanted completed? Let me
know...I'll be glad to put in my 2
cents worth! <smile>

I don't have a survey form, so whatever
is easiest for you will be fine for me.
Thanks so much for the information!

Ok, here goes...
I've used (mostly) Cross Creek Valley
Wool Mill, in Avella PA., and the Black
Ram, 5100 Eldora Rd., Waterloo, IA
50701.
Cross Creek is a community project, and
as such is deserving of support.
They've processed my wool well, seem to
be able to handle simple blends (mostly
of coarses fibers), and also seem to be
able to handle wool with slightly more
grease than most. They have sometimes
sent back dyed wool with a rather
annoying rate of "alien" fibers mixed
in; that's about the only drawback.
Prices seem quite reasonable, around
$2.50/lb. for carding clean wool. They
do run specials from time to time.
The Black Ram is a private enterprise,
owned and operated (obviously) by a
hand-spinner. They can card the
tiniest amount of fiber, and due to the
self-cleaning nature of their machinery
can apparently keep everything intact,
clean, and segregated. They can handle
most any fiber except the finest Bombyx
silk. Prices and timing are comperable
to Cross Creek. They do a fabulous job
on blends. Wool MUST be squeaky clean.
I've also worked with some wool from
Frankenmuth, but not enough to really
evaluate them adequately. I know they
DO require a minimum.
All these places return your own wool.
Cross Creek has recently instituted a 2
lb. minimum; I believe Frankenmuth's
minimum is even greater. Last I
checked, Black Ram had no minimum.
Is this what you needed? If you need
more specific prices, let me know and
I'll look them up for you.

Thanks! Great information! I'll be
forwarding it to Deborah this weekend.
Thanks for your help. (Gosh! Maybe
I'll even send a batch of my own wool
out!)

from Canadain sources? We have one up

does excellent work. They don't
advertise, they're growing by word of
mouth - and growing at a tremendous
rate! Wnat more info?

Finally, I found the information on
Miocene Custom Carding - is it too late
to get your friend?
"Miocene Custome Carding was
established to give a wool processing
service for the crafts person, spinners
and the large flock owners.
Our processing includes washing,
roving, pencil roving, batts and
spinning.
Well water and soap are used for
cleaning while natural heat is used to
dry the fibres.
There is a minimum poundage
requirement of 20 washed pounds, of one
colour or blends, for the processing of
pencil roving and for spinning. Other
processings do not have a minimum
amount of poundage. Spinning oil is
sprayed on the fibres for the more
complex processings.
Our gurantee is that you get your own
fibre back.
Out of twon orders, if not picked up,
will be shipped COD via (Canadian) Post
Office or Grey Hound.
Please send the following information
when shipping your fleece:
Name-Address-Phone Number as will as
explicit information on how you want
your fleece processed. Price list
(Canadian dollars) - Scouring - $1/lb,
Roving - 2.75/lb., Pencil Roving -
$2.75/lb, Batts - $2.50/lb, Blending -

These folks do an excellent job through
the roving stage - I've never used the
pencil rovings or the spun yarns, but
they look nice. The wool is picked as
it goes into the water for scouring.
Their scouring is 140 degree water and
a canadian equivelent of orvus paste,
so it's very gentle, but quite
thourough. I've had a couple of
fleeces done as roving, and have used
roving from friends which Miocene had
done too - all have been quite clean
and good, easy woolen spinning. They
don't have worsted carding,
unfortunetly - they're looking for
larger facilities and then they're
hoping to do get worsted roving
machinery. They're doing a booming
business - around shearing times, they
get swamped, but handspinners can
usually get their couple fleeces done
in a couple of weeks. I just can't say
enough about these folks - they're just
wonderful to deal with. Besides,
they're 30 miles outside of Williams
Lake, and it's a lovely drive out to
their place!<g>
