22nd July 1994
1994 FORMULA ONE SEASON - ANALYSIS OF FIRST HALF
It is exactly five months since I wrote the preview of the 1994 season. It
wasn't a very good preview. For example, I said that Tyrrell would be crap (I
predicted that Ukyo Katayama would be 25th in the championship). I also said
that Senna would win the championship - I am still sure that he would have
done. If you look at his two races (Aida doesn't count, since he went off at
the first corner), you will see that he was better than Schumacher. In Brazil,
Schumacher only took the lead because of his faster pit stop. At Imola, he had
a stable lead - although only for about a lap. This isn't much to go on, but I
am still sure.
I think I will show you my new, slightly more accurate, predictions for the
championship:
1) Schumacher 2) Hill 3) Berger 4) Alesi 5) Barrichello
6) Hakkinen 7) Coulthard 8) Brundle 9) Blundell 10) Katayama
11) Mansell? 12) Frentzen 13) De Cesaris 14) Fittipaldi 15) Irvine
16) Morbidelli 17) Verstappen 18) Lehto?? 19) Larini 20) Wendlinger
21) Martini 22) Panis 23) Herbert 24) Alboreto 25) Comas
26) Zanardi 27) Bernard 28) Zanardi 29) Brabham 30) Beretta
31) Gachot 32) Gounon 33) Belmondo
33??? Of course, this includes Mansell, Verstappen, Larini (who I forgot after
I saved the file), and Wendlinger (who has already scored points). Notice that
I place Brabham ahead of Beretta...
The constructors championship should be rather easier...
1) Benetton 2) Williams 3) Ferrari 4) Jordan 5) McLaren
6) Tyrrell 7) Sauber 8) Arrows 9) Minardi 10) Ligier
11) Lotus 12) Larrousse 13) Simtek 14) Pacific
Now I will talk a bit about some of the drivers to look out for in the second
half of the season... I think I will put them in order of 'probability of
winning a race'...
1) Micheal Schumacher...
Not much to be said... The only times he didn't win, he had some kind of
problem (gearbox in Spain, and, er, time penalty here)...
2) Damon Hill...
It would be nice if he could win without the victory being given to him by
Schumacher...
3) Gerhard Berger...
Now we start getting into the interesting bit. If both Hill and Schumacher
were out of a race, it would mean - shock horror - that someone other than Hill
or Schumacher would win... This is easier said than done - the Williams is
quite reliable, and as for Benetton... If by some trillion to one chance the
top two were out, Berger would probably be the one to see that nice black and
white flag first.
4) Jean Alesi...
A lot of people would like him to win, since he has been waiting so long for
one. He led at Monza 1993. With Ferrari going much better now, either Alesi or
Berger could be in pole in Italy this year. If the race actually goes ahead,
that is... There is a possibility that it may be cancelled, due to the fact
that the track owners don't want it to be safer...
5) Nigel Mansell...
His performance in France isn't much to go by, due to his mechanical
problem, but he could have a chance in one of the last three races.
6) Mika Hakkinen...
He led in Spain for a while, and qualified second in Monaco. Now all he
needs is an engine that doesn't explode every ten minutes...
7) Martin Brundle...
Morally a race winner, that one being Canada 1992 where he nearly won...
Before the season, he turned down an offer to drive for Jordan, and went to
McLaren instead. He may not have come second with Jordan, but at least he
probably would have finished more than two races...
8) Rubens Barrichello...
The future world champion lacks the equipment to win... But Jordan are
getting better. People are always talking about future world champions, but
what about future constructors champions??? After Benetton, Jordan could be the
next new winning constructor.
9) David Coulthard...
My sister thinks that he is wonderful, because he finished in the points at
Silverstone despite starting from the back of the grid...
10) David Brabham...
I don't know if you've noticed this, but Simtek is actually quite reliable
- Benetton and Williams are the only other really consistent cars. If all the
other cars were out, Brabham would have a good chance of winning!!!?!!!!??!!?!
Well, I think that is enough for now... I forgot the NEWSFLASH!!!
NEWSFLASH: Micheal, Damon, Mika and Rubens have all had a sharp word from the
FIA... The Federation Internationale de Automobile weren't very pleased when
Schumacher ignored the black flag at the British GP. There is a chance that he
could lose his 6 points, or be banned from the German GP! The FIA weren't very
pleased when Hill stopped after he won the race to pick up a flag - apparently,
stopping isn't allowed, although Mansell used to do it all the time... There is
a small possibility that Hill could lose some points too! The FIA weren't very
pleased when Barrichello and Hakkinen collided at the last corner... They might
have their points deducted as well...
The FIA are going to have a lot of spare points floating around, aren't they?
If by some million to one chance, all those drivers are robbed of their
positions, then... let's see... the finishing positions would look like this:
1) Jean Alesi
2) David Coulthard
3) Ukyo Katayama
4) Heinz-Harald Frentzen
5) Jos Verstappen
6) Christian Fittipaldi
Well done Alesi! Won at last...
See you on 31st July...
