THURSDAY 11TH AUGUST 1994
THE HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX
Benetton are facing a possible ban from the season, and the cause of Ayrton
Senna's fatal accident has been found. It was almost certainly caused by -
suprise suprise - a fault with the steering. Frank Williams, Patrick Head and
Adrian Newey have been charged with manslaughter - this is standard procedure
after a fatal crash. I can't give you any more information.
Now, to Benetton. They're in a bit of trouble. Apparently, the fire during Jos
Verstappen's pit stop in the German Grand Prix was caused by the removal of a
filter designed to stop nasty things going into the fuel tank. Benetton say
that they removed it because they thought it was a waste of time... In fact, it
was - having the filter (which, by the way, all refuelling rigs MUST have)
slows down refuelling... Benetton have been summoned to the FIA World Council
of Big Cheeses, and we'll have the verdict on October 19th. If Benetton are
excluded from the championship, this will make Damon Hill World Champion. Very
nice for all those people who like to go to Silverstone and shout "Damon!", but
I still feel that Schumacher should be the champion. Many people have said that
Damon's two wins were given to him, but the championship is something much more
serious...
See you when next we play Going for the worst season ever...
Saturday...
What a bummer! It says in the TV magazine: '1.15 - Motor racing, News of final
qualifying from Hungary'. I go downstairs at 1.14, and I am told that it has
just finished! What the fuck is going on? I am very pissed off about this - I
have watched every race and every televised qualifying session this year...
Well, I have the first 5 positions... Wonderful... By the way, all those people
who were supposedly banned after the last race (they being Alboreto, De Cesaris
and Zanardi) will be driving tomorrow - it seems that they are having a 'one-
race suspended ban', i.e. if they make a silly mistake again, they'll be banned
for one race. Barrichello and Hakkinen got this punishment after the British
GP, and now Hakkinen has mucked up, he has got the one race ban. I don't know
where Phillipe Alliot has qualified, but yesterday he was 17th! And people were
saying that Martin Brundle's place was in jeopardy!

Sunday...
Well, the race wasn't too exciting. At the start, Hill overtook Schumacher, but
Schumacher managed to be leading into the first corner. Irvine, Katayama and
Barrichello all took each other out at the first corner. On lap 17, Schumacher
made his stop and Hill took the lead. This was reversed on lap 25 when Hill
stopped. By this time, the two leaders were far ahead of the others. Meanwhile,
Berger and Coulthard were battling for 3rd place. Schumacher extended his lead
to about 30 seconds. Hill managed to regain some time, but not enough...
Something really strange happened at the end of the race. The positions were:
Schumacher, Hill, Brundle, Verstappen, but something happened to Brundle, and
he only came 4th, giving Verstappen 3rd place. The other strange and rather
silly thing that happened: While the three top drivers were standing on the
podium, some bloke with two Union flags on a pole started waving his flags in
front of the TV cameras, and also all over the drivers... Hill and Verstappen
were nearly poked to death! After that, the three got their revenge by pouring
champange on the offender... (Punishment?)
