SATURDAY 28TH MAY 1994
THE SPANISH GRAND PRIX
On Tuesday, the Portugese driver Pedro Lamy crashed at Silverstone, while
testing the new low downforce regulations. So much for safety. I hear that he
has broken both his kneecaps. And his arm. And his leg. I don't know anything
other than that. I haven't heard anything about Karl, either. In practise this
morning, someone called Andrea Montermini had a serious crash, although he is
not seriously hurt. Montermini (from Italy, if you hadn't guessed) would have
been taking the place of Roland Ratzenberger at Simtek, however, he will not be
able to race tomorrow. Mr Jean Marc Gounon of France is going to drive for
Simtek from the French GP onwards (Ratzenberger was only going to have 5 races
anyway, since this was the original plan). As expected by many, Williams test
driver David Coulthard has taken control of car number 2 for this race; he has
qualified 9th for his first race.
Herez the qualifying positions (at the moment I know the top 9, plus the
crapper (certainly not!) British drivers):
1) SCHUMACHER (Benetton)
2) HILL (Williams)
3) HAKKINEN (McLaren)
4) LEHTO (Benetton)
5) BARRICHELLO (Jordan)
6) ALESI (Ferrari)
7) BERGER (Ferrari)
8) BRUNDLE (McLaren)
9) COULTHARD (Williams)
10) KATAYAMA (Tyrrell)
11) BLUNDELL (Tyrrell)
12) FRENTZEN (Sauber)
13) IRVINE (Jordan)
14) ALBORETO (Minardi)
15) MORBIDELLI (Arrows)
16) COMAS (Larrousse)
17) BERETTA (Larrousse)
18) MARTINI (Minardi)
19) PANIS (Ligier)
20) BERNARD (Ligier)
21) FITTIPALDI (Arrows)
22) HERBERT (Lotus)
23) ZANARDI (Lotus)
24) BRABHAM (Simtek)
25) GACHOT (Pacific)
26) BELMONDO (Pacific)
Looks like Belmondo will race again... Only 26 drivers are fit to drive in this
race, which is good news for Pacific... In fact, at the end of yesterday's
first qualifying session, Belmondo was ahead of his team mate, however, I think
this would have been because of some kind of problem with either Gachot or his
car, since Gachot's time was two seconds off Belmondo's. Johnny Herbert also
must have had problems yesterday, since his time was about 1:59... Talking of
Lotus, their second seat has been reclaimed by the man who held it for most of
last season, although from our point of view, that second car will look exactly
the same (maybe Lamy and Zanardi are robots?)...
I actually saw the last 10 minutes or so of qualifying (the BBC have seen the
light at last). When I switched on, JJ Lehto was actually in second place, with
Hill in third and Hakkinen in 7th. First, Hakkinen took that place from him,
then in the last few minutes, Hill ended his domination of the fourth grid
position by taking the place from Hakkinen (who will no doubt be great friends
with Damon after what happened in Monaco).
Oh yes, and also, there was quite a bit of trouble on Thursday, when most of
the teams boycotted the practise session and threatened to withdraw from the
race if the FIA didn't make improvements - as a result of this, only 9 of the
27 cars took part in that practise. The FIA did make the improvements - i.e. a
chicane made out of tyres just before the 'potentially dangerous' Nissan
corner. Pacific promptly made their objections clear by ordering Gachot to
crash into the tyres, which he did. Now, there was a picture of this in the
newspaper, and the tyres were everywhere. Now, what's going to happen if
someone nudges them in the race? Will they all collapse onto the track? I bet
they will. What's more, they'd probably have to stop the race so they could put
that corner back. Hmm. They could have concreted those tyres over, or
something...
Well, tomorrow I am going away, so the race will be recorded at the place where
I am going to, so I can watch it there and report from there. Also, I will
probably listen to the radio in the car (I haven't listened to F1 on the radio
before. What's it like? Does it have Murray Walker saying things like: "Just
look at this! Marvellous stuff!" and Jonathan Palmer saying "Oh dear, you just
saw that, that's just the kind of thing that Schumacher was dreading"?)...
Anyway, I will seeeeeeeeeeeeeeee you tomorrow. Bye.
SUNDAY 29TH MAY 1994
SPANISH GRAND PRIX, CIRCUIT DE CATALUNYA, BARCELONA
Sod this. It's nearly midnight, and I've experienced the race three times...
First there was the radio coverage, which wasn't particularly interesting,
there was some bloke called Simon, who kept talking to someone called Morris.
Then I watched the thing on video. I have just finished watching the highlights
(from video, because we had to go out). I won't say much on the race, just a
few important things:
Like, Hakkinen led at one point. And so did Schumacher and Hill. But one thing
which will go down in history as the main event of this race is what happened
to Schumacher...
You see, good old Micheal was driving along, he was just arriving at the new
chicane that the drivers had had put up, he touched the little gear change
button on his steering wheel, and nothing happened... A pit stop at the end of
that lap didn't prevent the problem...
The really amazing thing is that, instead of retiring like most people would
have done, Schumacher drove about the last 50 laps of the race in 5th gear...
And he finished second... Incredible...
Glad that's over. Let's have the finishing stuff, then.
1) Damon Hill (Williams) 10 Points
2) Micheal Schumacher (Benetton) 6 Points
3) Mark Blundell (Tyrrell) 4 Points
4) Jean Alesi (Ferrari) 3 Points
5) Pierluigi Martini (Minardi) 2 Points
6) Eddie Irvine (Jordan) Do I really have to tell you?
I mean, are you stupid or
something? God knows why I
bother with this F1 reporting,
it's not as if anyone is going
to seriously read this.
7) Olivier Panis (Ligier) 0 Points
8) Eric Bernard (Ligier) Zilcho.
9) Alessandro Zanardi (Lotus) Nowt.
10) David Brabham (Simtek) -273 degrees centigrade.
DRIVERS CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE:
1) Micheal Schumacher 46 Points
2) Damon Hill 17 Points
3) Gerhard Berger 10 Points
4) Jean Alesi 9 Points
5) Rubens Barrichello 7 Points
6) Nicola Larini 6 Points
Martin Brundle 6 Points
8) Mika Hakkinen 4 Points
Karl Wendlinger 4 Points
Ukyo Katayama 4 Points
Mark Blundell 4 Points
12) Christian Fittipaldi 3 Points
Andrea de Cesaris 3 Points
14) Heinz-Harald Frentzen 2 Points
Pierluigi Martini 2 Points
16) Erik Comas 1 Point
Michele Alboreto 1 Point
Eddie Irvine 1 Point
I originally said that all but 10 drivers have scored, however, this is not
true because Andrea de Cesaris was substituting for Irvine, so you could count
them as the same driver (except that de Cesaris was better. Hah.).
Incidentally, Sauber have welcomed de Cesaris with open hearts (as opposed to
Jordan, with just open Harts (what a crap and totally obscure joke)), and it
seems that Andrea will drive in place of Karl Wendlinger (who is apparently
getting better).
CONSTRUCTORS CHAMPIONSHIP:
1) Benetton-Ford 46 Points
2) Ferrari 25 Points
3) Williams-Renault 17 Points
4) Jordan-Hart 11 Points
5) McLaren-Peugeot 10 Points
6) Tyrrell-Yamaha 8 Points
7) Sauber-Mercedes 6 Points
8) Arrows-Ford 3 Points
Minardi-Ford 3 Points
10) Larrousse-Ford 1 Point
I think I have fucked this up, I'm sure that Ferr.... Oh shit! I forgot about
Larini! That's why I've been getting so confused (I first wrote '22' for
Ferrari, at the moment it says '19' - I'll have to change it...).... Hmm, so it
should be 25... That sounds about right.
Whoops, forgot about the casualties (maybe I should say 'retirements',
otherwise it would be Montermini here...). Here's a new concept: This time, for
a bit of fun, they're in the order they went off in...:
Beretta (parade lap!), Belmondo, Alboreto, Katayama, Morbidelli, Frentzen,
Coulthard, Gachot, Fittipaldi, Barrichello, Berger, Herbert, Hakkinen (from
3rd), Lehto, Comas (don't know when or how he went out) and Brundle. Brundle's
retirement was the most dramatic - the car suddenly turned into Andrea de
Lorean (??) and went back to the gravel trap, with the engine on fire...
Oh yes, and did you know that in his first pit stop, David Coulthard (who
reached 6th at one point), stalled three times? This put him back to 20th...
Anyway, I'll bog off now. Next thingy is in Canada, that'll be fun...
