The Best of the Glossies!
=========================
OK, so you might think this article's a little weird. What
we're actually going to be doing, is putting the three
glossy mags head to head, and see which one comes out top!
We'll start by giving details of each one (a small review)
and then we'll compare them together.
ST FORMAT
---------
ST Format is the most popular glossy magazine on the market,
published by Future Publishing. It is very well presented,
and although it's usually around 100 pages in length, on
average, 27 of those pages are adverts leaving you with 73
pages of editorial which is pretty good. There are hardly
any grammar or spelling mistakes, and ST Format caters for
all types of user; from games player to MIDI musician. ST
Format also have a weird sense of humour - take a look
through its pages and you'll see what I mean. But this is no
way bad. Overall, ST Format is a pretty good mag, and at
£3.50 you also get a coverdisk with software; although the
software is usually PD with the odd commercial demo now and
then.
ST USER
-------
The second most popular magazine, with a readership of
around 19,000. Since ST Action couldn't sell on its on, it
has now been included in ST User making it good for gamers.
The magazine has still got a lot of serious stuff in it,
although several of the good sections are small, like the
letters pages. It normally has around 90 pages inside its
covers, 25 which are adverts making it a little less good
value for money that ST Format as it is priced at £3.60, ten
pence more. The magazine is pretty nicely presented,
although I did prefer the style they used to have a year
ago. Oh yep - they've got a coverdisk, as usual.
ST REVIEW
---------
They thought they'd met their match when EMAP Images dropped
them from their list, but now Europress have taken over
publication of the glossy with a readership of 17,000. It is
aimed mostly at the serious user, as there is not a great
deal of games coverage, but what it does have is top
quality. ST Review have recently taken on a new design,
which I prefer, and overall I think their presentation is
better than all the other magazines. ST Review is priced at
£3.50 inlcluding the coverdisk which usually has top quality
software on it, and it packs ninety pages in between its
covers with 20 adverts in it. This makes it about the same
value as ST Format.
