==INSIDE INFORMATION==
=Computer Pornography=
======================
Like piracy, it's illegal. But like piracy, people still do
it. On at least 15% of the Bulletin boards in Britain you
will find it in some form or another. Even some PD libraries
have it. What I am talking about is computer pornography.
Scanned pictures or digitised sequences that people get
money for. OK, so it's up to adults what they want to buy.
But what about the millions of kids all over the world that
can access these "obscene sequences"? In this week's INSIDE
INFORMATION we take a look at computer pornography and with
the help of Daniel Lock, fourteen years old, have managed to
interview some children (between thirteen and sixteen)
about computer pornography.
If you're a kid, and you want to get hold of pornographic
pictures and you own a computer, all you need to do is call
up the appropriate BBS and download the file. It's as simple
as that. Now, most kids don't have modems. These kids just
find a PD library that sells the stuff and write off to them
to order it. The PDLs can't find out how old the buyer is
and normally just send off the software.
Luckily, pornography isn't as rife on the ST as it is on
some computers. The Amiga and PC are much more affected.
There is one program on the Amiga which several thirteen
year olds got hold of and spread to all their friends who
in turn spread to their friends and so on. This program was
called Bedtime Olympics and it was a game. I won't go into
the details for various reasons, but I can tell you, the
screens it showed were worse than in some pornographic
magazines. Of course, the programmer's address wasn't given.
That program's probably still being spread to other thirteen
year olds.
The more advanced we get, the more computer pornography will
increase. Take a look at the Falcon. It has near true colour
modes, higher than CD quality sound, a fast and accurate
processor, a high speed modem port and an internal hard
drive. All this means that the offending software can get
down to the computer quicker and go straight onto the hard
drive. And if it is recorded straight onto the hard drive
you can store 3 minute films on your Falcon. The sound
quality is better and so are the images. The Falcon is an
ideal candidate for the "pornographers" and no one can stop
them.
Let's take a look at the interviews posed to several
children by Daniel. I would also like to say that Daniel
owns no pornographic software and is not involved in it in
any shape or form. The views expressed by the interviewees
are not necessarily the views of Hi-Tech or Dynamic
Publications.

Do you own pornographic software?
Yes. I've got five disks for my Amiga 1200.
How did you get them?
From my mate. I gave him a tenner and he gave me the disks.
Why did you buy them?
Because I know other kids want them and I can sell them for
about a fiver each and can make myself some money.
Did you know that computer pornography is illegal?
Yes. Porn mags aren't so why should computer porn be?
MARK, AGED 14

Do you own pornographic software?
No. I haven't heard of it.
What computer do you own?
An Amstrad CPC 6128
JONATHAN, AGED 14
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Do you own pornographic software?
I don't, but some of my mates do.
How did they get them?
I don't know. I think one of them got them from a PDL and
gave it to the others.
Why did they buy them?
I don't know. Go ask them.
Did you know that computer pornography is illegal?
No. I thought that was only piracy. Wait tell I tell my
mates.
ANDREW, AGED 14
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Do you own pornographic software?
No. Well, only some IFF files with pictures on.
How did you get them?
From ******** PDL
Why did you buy them?
I dunno really. I can sell them to my friends and get some
dosh I suppose.
Did you know that computer pornography is illegal?
It isn't. If it's illegal how come PDLs sell it?
SARAH, AGED 15
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Do you own pornographic software?
No. I wouldn't think of it. Why would I want it anyway? I
know some of the boys have got some for their computers. My
brother's got some on his computer and I've even seen him
buy printouts.
How did he get them?
I don't know. I'm not really into computers. All I know is
that if mum found out she'd kill him.
Why did he buy them?
I don't know. What is this? Twenty questions?
Did you know that computer pornography is illegal?
No. Have you finished yet?
I have to say that we had to search quite hard to find the
people who did own pornography, and the majority of it was
on the PC, maybe because this is the most popular computer.
Out of all the people we did find who owned computer
pornography were two ST owners. They were both aged
fourteen.
Another problem has occurred. Because PDLs are distributing
illegal computer porn, the children think it's allowed. They
don't realise it's illegal and this is very bad. Surely PDLs
can stay alive without including pornography in their
software collection. I know that Floppyshop, one of the
biggest PDLs around, DON'T HAVE ANY pornographic software in
their collection. Well done Floppyshop - and all you other
PDLs who don't have pornographic software.
Many BBSs also have computer porn on their hard drives. But
it's very difficult to catch them. If they are caught they
often blame it on "somebody uploading the software" to them.
They often do the same thing when they are caught with
pirated software. If you see a BBS which has pirated
software or computer porn on it, live a message for the
sysop. If the software doesn't disappear within forty eight
hours, contact FAST or us at the normal address.
