Epson Stylus 800
================
When you think of Epson, you think of dot matrix printers.
Well, you'd better start thinking of inkjets now, because
Epson have just released the Stylus 800. It is a 360dpi
inkjet printer, but uses a different type of technology
called piezo-electric. This "new" technology is claimed to
be quicker, give better quality print and save money. But
does it? Let's take a look....
The Stylus 800 looks very similar to the Deskjet in
appearance as it uses the "armchair" design. A paper tray
stick out from underneath it which holds 100 sheets and
above the tray is a "shelf" where the paper sits when it has
been printed on. The power switch can be located at the
front of the printer while the power socket and parallel
port are at the back like on most printers. Behind the
printer there is a large slot where you can feed envelopes
into the printer or non-standard paper. Also behind the
printer is a panel which can be removed to clear paper jams.
Instead of replacing the whole print head, you just replace
the ink cartridge and this is very easy; open the cover and
drop in the cartridge.
There are no DIP (Dual Inline Package) switches for changing
default settings. Instead you enter a mode where the printer
prints out a menu and you use the buttons on the control
panel to change the settings. Although this uses up paper,
it is very user friendly. In fact, nearly everything about
the Stylus is user friendly. The manual is well-written and
very clear, and the control panel is very simple.
Seven fonts are included for you to use with the Stylus.
They are Roman (two types), Sans Serif (two types), Script,
Prestige and Courier. They can all be accessed via the
control panel and are scalable in any sizes from eight to
thirty-two points.
On the quality side, don't expect to be overwhelmed. The
quality isn't really as good as the BJ or Deskjet printers,
but it is better than 24 pin dot matrix printers. The fonts
seem to be a little jagged and sometimes slightly rough.
However, they look quite good unless you peer at them
closely. Most people don't do this, though!
The speed is quite average; the same as the Deskjets really,
maybe a little faster. It takes about 36 seconds to print
out an A4 page of text and around two minutes for graphics.
For £250 the Stylus is quite reasonable. But the Deskjet
560C can be purchased for £200 and is definitely better than
the Stylus. However, as running costs can be kept low using
the "economy mode" it does have its advantages.
Bubblejet printing
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
In printers like the BJ10 and the Deskjet 500 printing is
done by boiling ink. There are about fifty nozzles in these
printers all packed together closely. In a bubblejet printer
there is a little electric coil that heats up the ink to
a very high temperature. This causes a bubble to form which
pushes the ink out of the nozzle on to the paper. This all
happens very, very quickly. The other method inkjets use is
the piezo-electric.
Piezo-electric
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
This is the method that the Stylus 800 uses for printing. In
each of the fifty nozzles packed together there is a quartz
crystal. When an electrical current is passed through these
crystals they enlarge and a drop of ink is pushed out of the
end of the nozzle onto the paper. When the current is turned
off, the crystal shrinks to its normal size and draws more
ink into the nozzle. This all happens very quickly, and much
more quicker than the method described above. Up until now,
piezo-electric printers have been very expensive to
manufacture and quite difficult to make.
The Uppers....
