Zero Five: Better than Elite?
=============================
Caspian software haven't been around for that long, but
already they've taken the market by surprise. Thanks to
Caspian, STE owners are getting games that take advantage of
their extra hardware, and so are Falcon owners. The latest
game from Caspian claims to be an Elite 2 beater. But can
something that's only been in development six months be
better than something that's been in development for over
two years? Let's find out....
Zero Five is a 3D shoot-'em-up in the same style as a game
called Starship which was released on the 8-bits a while
ago. In Zero Five your aim is to save the world from
disaster, blow the hell out of enemies and interact with
other ships. But what's so good about this?
Zero Five has some of the best graphics and sound effects
ever seen, or heard, on the ST. On the STE version there
will be texture mapping and brilliant 3D graphics produced
by what Caspian claim as the "most advanced 3D generator on
the ST". You really do have to see the game to believe
it.....
Where sound effects are concerned there's no lack of them.
Zero Five takes advantage of the STE's DMA hardware to the
limit, producing digitised speech and sampled sound effects
that will cause your ear-drums to burst. Well, not quite.
Seriously though, Zero Five has a brilliant balance of
graphics, sound FX and gameplay which not many other games
have. Remember Monkey Island? Well this is the Monkey Island
of shoot-'em-ups the way its looking so far! It's good. Very
good.
Caspian are working on the space battles at the moment,
though. That's what they really need to get finished first.
In these, you have to battle with other ships until one of
you meets with that nice person death. Of course, the more
weapons you have, the better chance you have of surviving.
Unfortunately, Caspian have encountered a problem. Because
you and enemy ships have a fixed speed its very hard for you
to kill each other and battles get rather drawn out and
boring. Caspian have thought of an idea though - put engines
into the game to allow you to adjust your speed. Apparently
this idea came from ST Format!
Before I run out of any more things to say, I'll tell you
about Caspian's digitising service. When you play Zero Five
there is a digitised picture of a pilot shown on-screen. If
you send a photo of yourself into Caspian, they'll digitise
it and put it in place of the photo of the pilot. Yes -
you'll see yourself as the pilot! Games are just getting
better and better aren't they? Brilliant.
Well, I can't give you any more details - I've completely
run out of things to say. You'll just have to wait until
September when Zero Five is released. Then we'll have a full
review.
