* DESK JET USER - BY J.DAVIDSON *
**********************************
This is a column for B.O.S. owners of the excellently good HP
DeskJet printer. I understand that there are many people who have
chosen this popular and well supported printer for their computer
as it offers great print quality at a low price. In this column I
will answer questions and provide hints and tips for getting the
best out of your DeskJet when using it with an ST.
I own a DeskJet 500 printer, and usually run it with the GDOS
printer driver. This is quite simple, installing GDOS using 300
DPI fonts and the driver, but for pre-DeskJet programs, printing
out can be a bit of a pain. I have got an Epson emulation
cartridge, which was previously my dad's, and he gave the whole
lot to me when he got his LaserJet, a brilliant printer. This
makes the DeskJet think it's an Epson, and thus can print out from
programs which only support the Epson printer. This cartridge is
excellent and makes life a lot easier, but if you can't get it
anywhere, don't worry. I have a most excellent little program called
EpsJet, a software emulator for the DeskJet which makes it think
it's an Epson, and makes compatability problems a thing of the
past. As a bonus, I have put this excellent program onto this
disk, follow the instructions in the HOW TO EXTRACT ARCHIVES article
and extract EPSJET.TOS and de-archive it. Et voila! Epsjet!
Another tip of mine is for general inkjet users. If your nozzle
becomes blocked, I've found that the best way to unblock it is to
boil some water and place the cartridge over the steam, protecting
your hands. Leave it there for about 5-10 seconds and then wipe
the nozzles with a tissue and all the dried ink should go. Please
note that steam can scould your hand easily, so take adequate
protection when doing this, you can't blame me if you burn
yourself!
I hope many of you will find this section useful, and if I have
some support I will make it a regular column within the B.O.S. If
you want any help, tips etc then write to me. Letters will be
published in this column to help other readers, unless you don't
want them to be. Write to the usual B.O.S. address. JD.
