  1.                       The Top 25 PD Games
  2.  
  3.      Welcome  to the top 25 public domain games available  at  the 
  4. moment.  Must  of these are at least as good as  their  commercial 
  5. counter  parts  and  well worth spending three quid  or  less  on. 
  6. Notice that there are 9 Budgie UK licenceware games in the top 25.
  7. Not bad Huh ?
  8.     This  chart includes the ST Format percentages for  each  game  
  9. cos its the best ST magazine around for PD software coverage ( and 
  10. for most other things as well ). 
  11.  
  12. 1)  Llamatron                                                  95%
  13.   Has everyone gone over the top on this game or wot  ?  Admittedly 
  14. it  is one of the best PD ( Shareware actually ) games around  but 
  15. its still not perfect, yet every computer magazine just won't shut 
  16. up about it.  Well I'm getting a bit bored with it all ( and a bit 
  17. jealous as well ).

  19. 2)  Bolo                                                       93%
  20.    A breakout game.  Sometimes I think that there are only  three 
  21. types of game in the PD,  breakout,  boulderdash and  pacman.  The 
  22. place  is  full of them.  why can't we  have  something  original. 
  23. However  as  breakout games go this is the best of its  type  with 
  24. many  original features not even found in commercial versions  even 
  25. if it does lack a bit of colour.

  27. 3) Dizzy Lizzy 2    ( Budgie licenceware )                     92%
  28.     I  seem  to recognise this from somewhere but  I  can't  think 
  29. where.  A boulderdash game (see I told you) with superb  graphics 
  30. and good gameplay and a smattering of originality, but not much.
  31.  
  32. 4) Spectral Sorcery                                            92%
  33.      This has been around for sometime now and was excellent  when 
  34. it first came out.  It still is.  Highly original and great fun to 
  35. play if you're into strategy boardgames.
  36.  
  37. 5) Cooltetris                                                  91%
  38.      One of the best tetris variants in the Public  domain.  There 
  39. not much more I can say really.  If you don't know what tetris is 
  40. then  sell your computer and become a buddhist monk ( mind you  if 
  41. you've never heard of Tetris you probably are a buddhist monk ).

  43. 6) From Little Acorns ( Budgie UK )                            90%
  44.     An excellent RPG/adventure based around the hobbit. Great fun.
  45.  
  46. 7) Ball Blazer                                                 90%
  47.     Very similar to an old game that I had on the Spectrum called 
  48. Trailblazer. steer your ball down a perspective track jumping over 
  49. holes and trying to hit the coloured tiles to get power  ups.  Very 
  50. fast.
  51.  
  52. 8) Electronic jigsaw                                           90%
  53.     Hmmm.  I'm not quite sure how this got here.  It's a  computer 
  54. version of those old hand held puzzles that everyone had when they 
  55. were kids,  where you had to slid the tiles around to make up  the 
  56. picture.  nice graphics but it could get very boring and is really 
  57. up there with the best.

  59. 9) Dark Wars ( Budgie UK )                                     87%
  60.      I can't really say much about this as I wrote it,  but I  can 
  61. tell you that its a role playing game that's a cross between  Bards 
  62. tale and Dungeon master and there may be a sequel coming out soon.

  64. 10) The Pay Off                                                 87%
  65.      A  good text and graphics adventure where you have  to  raise 
  66. money  to pay off the local mafia to stop them  doing  unspeakably 
  67. nasty things to you.
  68.  
  69. 11) Micheal's Big Adventure                                     86%
  70.       A fun graphic adventure aimed more at children  than  anyone 
  71. else.  Simple graphics and the game isn't to complex but it should 
  72. appeal to kids.

  74. 12) Exodus ( Budgie UK )                                       85%
  75.     A great scrolling shoot'em up with very good graphics and game 
  76. play. 
  77.  
  78. 13) Pop Eyed                                                   85%
  79.     Phwoar.  This is more like it, a strip pop quiz with some very 
  80. nice  graphics and unlike must strip games it is actually  fun  to 
  81. play as well.
  82.  
  83. 14) Mix 'n' Match                                              85%
  84.     Another strange one this.  It is one of those games where  you 
  85. have  to guess where the pairs are and match them up.  It's  quite 
  86. good fun but a bit simple and lacking on gameplay compared to  the 
  87. others in this list.

  89. 15) Master Break                                               84%
  90.      Another breakout game.  This one is colourful with some  nice 
  91. graphics and quite addictive.
  92.  
  93. 16) Skull Diggery                                              84%
  94.     A boulderdash game.  This is very similar to Douglas Rockmoor 
  95. but if anything is not quite as good.
  96.  
  97. 17) Pacman ST ( Budgie UK )                                    83%
  98.      The  best Pacman game available.  Fast colourful and  with  a 
  99. large  play  area ( the screen scrolls up  and  down).  Choice  of 
  100. traditional or modern styles.
  101.  
  102. 18) Bert the Squirt ( Budgie UK )                              82%
  103.      A simple platform game with OK graphics that is great fun  to 
  104. play. One of the best platform games available.
  105.  
  106. 19) Tetris                                                     82%
  107.       Another  tetris game.  Very similar to Cooltetris  but  not 
  108. quite as good.
  109.  
  110. 20) Douglas Rockmoor ( Budgie UK )                             81%
  111.        Yet  another  boulderdash game.  This is one  of  the  best 
  112. however with fast scrolling and great gameplay. 
  113.  
  114. 21) Space Blob   ( Budgie UK )                                 79%
  115.         Another platform game that is fun to play.  Nice  graphics 
  116. but a bit simplistic.
  117.  
  118. 22) A Quest for Galaxia  ( Budgie UK )                         78%
  119.      A version of the old game galaxia which itself was a  version 
  120. of  space  invaders.  Another game that is fun to play but  a  bit 
  121. simplistic.

  123. 23) Trax quiz                                                  78%
  124.     A simple quiz game.  Not as good as Pop Eyed ( well it doesn't 
  125. have the same incentives ).
  126.  
  127. 24) Plumb crazy                                                76%
  128.      A version of the commercial game Pipe Mania that is almost as 
  129. good. Graphics are a bit simple but it has nice gameplay.
  130.  
  131. 25) Hac-Man                                                    73%
  132.      An average pac-man game.  There are better about ( see Pacman 
  133. ST above ).  
  134.  
  135.   Well that's it,  the top 25 PD games according to ST  Format  and 
  136. with  the  exception  of  a couple  they  really  are  very  good. 
  137. Obviously  not all PD games have been reviewed and I for one  know 
  138. of one or two other Budgie games that deserve to be in there.
