If you intend continued use of the program.
MYMONO.PRG is an STE monoemulator that makes extensive use of
the machines enhanced capabilities to produce the fastest mono
emulator available. You'll see from the timings below that it is
considerably faster than version 5.0 of MICK WEST's mono emulator and
as such is actually quite a serious alternative to buying a mono
monitor if you just use mono applications occaisionally.
I've tried it with everything I have including Calamus and
some music packages and there seems to be no problems whatsoever. I
had to resort to a trick to make TOS think there was no blitter in
the machine and as such the menu option to turn the blitter on or off
no longer appears on the GEM desktop. This does mean however that YOU
MUST SAVE YOUR DESKTOP WITH THE BLITTER TURNED OFF OR THE SOFTWARE
WILL NOT WORK.
There are quite a few options and 3 different emulation modes
available. The software must run from the Auto folder, but I don't
believe it has to be the first program run, unless other things in
this folder make decisions based on the resolution of the machine, in
which case it should run before those applications. When the emulator
boots you have the option of hitting <RETURN> and getting your saved
defaults or choosing all the options manually.
SPEED:
This is the speed of update. 0 will give you a perfectly
smooth emulation, just like looking at a real mono monitor, the mouse
doesn't jerk and the graphics don't ghost. The down side is of course
that this slows down the operation of the machine considerably, look
at the timing below to see the facts and figures. 9 is very slow
update but the machine runs almost as if no emulation was happenning.
ALIASING:
This is the same type of emulation used by existing emulators
although considerably faster, it uses a special palette that allows
the screen to be antialiased, subsequently increasing the apparent
resolution but also giving a slightly blurred look to screen.
INTERLACE:
A new way of cramming 400 lines of data into only 200, the
idea is of course used on the Amiga to do just that. This, whilst
being a very faithful representation of the high rez screen, is very
annoying to most people, I personally don't mind it that much but use
it at your own risk.
SCROLLING:
This method is the clearest of all modes but you only get the
200 lines nearest your mouse pointer shown at any time. The display
automatically scrolls with the cursor.
SYNC:
You can choose to put your machine and monitor into 50 or
60Hz mode. This is for the sake of choice. Some people prefer 60Hz on
interlace mode as the flicker is faster and slightly less noticable.
SAVE:
Once you have made all your choices you can save the settings
as defaults so that each time you boot hitting return will produce
your favourite setup. An info file will be created on the disk and
you will be warned of any problems (like write protect).
TIMINGS
All these timings were produced with the excelent QINDEX1.5
all numbers are percent of normal speed (100%). In each column the
left hand number is using the fastest emulation (screen update) the
middle using the initial default settings, and the right most number
is using the slowest emulation.
