  10.  This is a small document that explains in very terse terms the
  11.  differences between the TOS revisions available for ST/MEGA/STE/Mega
  12.  STE/TT machines, what patches are needed for what revisions, the formats
  13.  they are available in, and any notes I can think of.
  14.  
  15.  I hope this will clear up some of the confusion with the different TOS

  27.  ROM TOS (TOS 1.0)
  28.  -------
  29.  The original ROM TOS, this version shipped in 520ST and 1040ST machines.
  30.  It is no longer shipping in any machines.
  31.  
  32.    Formats:   2 chip ROMs, 6 chip ROMs
  33.   Machines:   520ST, 1040ST
  34.  Utilities:   FOLDRXXX.PRG
  35.  
  36.  FOLDRXXX.PRG will add more entries into your OS Pool.  In TOS 1.0 and
  37.  TOS 1.02, the limit for the number of directories that you can enter is
  38.  around 40.  With this program you can extend that limit much higher.  If
  39.  you are using a hard drive, this program is recommended highly.  It will
  40.  work with all TOS versions and will improve the performance of your
  41.  system.

  43.  Notes:   GET TOS 1.04 TODAY!  TOS 1.04 is the latest version of TOS for
  44.           520/1040/MEGA owners.  It is MUCH faster, has faster, better
  45.           disk I/O, many other improvements.

  47.  MEGA TOS (TOS 1.02)
  48.  --------
  49.  This is commonly referred to as MEGA TOS. This version of TOS fixes some
  50.  minor problems in TOS 1.0 and has support for the BLiTTER chip and Real-
  51.  Time Clock chip.

  53.    Formats:   2 chip ROMs, 6 chip ROMs
  54.   Machines:   520ST, 1040ST, Mega 2, Mega 4
  55.  Utilities:   FOLDRXXX.PRG

  57.  FOLDRXXX.PRG is explained above.

  59.     Notes:   See notes for TOS 1.0.. GET TOS 1.04 TODAY!

  62.  Rainbow TOS (TOS 1.04)
  63.  -----------
  64.  TOS 1.04 or Rainbow TOS, as it is commonly known is the latest version
  65.  of TOS available for 520/1040/MEGA owners.  It has been available as a
  66.  dealer upgrade for awhile now.  It has much more robust Disk I/O,
  67.  Autorunning of GEM programs at boot up, a fix for the 40 folder limit,
  68.  and much more.  Most of all is it much faster than previous versions of
  69.  the Operating System.

  71.    Formats:   2 chip ROMs, 6 chip ROMs (available as Upgrade!)
  72.   Machines:   Stacy
  73.  Utilities:   TOS14FIX.PRG, POOLFIX3.PRG, CACHEXXX.PRG, FOLDRXXX.PRG

  75.  TOS14FIX.PRG solves some small problems in the AES (for additional
  76.  information, please see the documentation that accompanies the
  77.  TOS14FIX.PRG program).

  79.  POOLFIX3.PRG fixes a bug in GEMDOS.  Documentation that accompanies the
  80.  POOLFIX3.PRG program explains (in detail) the problem that it fixes.

  82.  CACHEXXX.PRG is a new program that adds GEMDOS buffers to your system.
  83.  The caching of data and disk directories by GEMDOS (when this program is
  84.  used) will result in your system running much faster!  This program is
  85.  highly recommended and requires TOS 1.04 or higher for full benefits!

  87.  FOLDRXXX.PRG is explained above.

  89.  Notes:   Please use the utilities available and if you haven't upgraded
  90.           to this version of TOS yet.. please consider doing so.  It's a
  91.           very worthwhile upgrade.

  93.           There are some disk-based versions of _early_ developer only
  94.           releases of TOS 1.04 floating around on BBS systems here in the
  95.           United States and abroad.  Please don't use them!  They are bad
  96.           news!  They have some very nasty bugs and have been known to
  97.           corrupt data!
  98.  
  99.  STE TOS, Rev 1 (TOS 1.06)
  100.  --------------
  101.  TOS 1.06 is the TOS version that is shipped with the 1040STE and 520STE
  102.  machines.  It is essentially TOS 1.04 with support for the new hardware
  103.  that the STE has.

  105.    Formats:   2 chip ROMs
  106.   Machines:   520STE, 1040STE
  107.  Utilities:   STE_FIX.PRG, POOLFIX3.PRG, CACHEXXX.PRG, FOLDRXXX.PRG

  109.  STE_FIX fixes the infamous Desktop Medium/Low resolution bug.  The
  110.  problem is that there is a bug in the desktop code in this version of
  111.  TOS that prevents the user from booting into Medium Resolution.  The
  112.  patch program STE_FIX will solve the problem.  Once it is executed in
  113.  the AUTO folder, the problem no longer exists.

  115.  FOLDRXXX.PRG, CACHEXXX.PRG, and POOLFIX3.PRG are explained above.

  117.  Notes:   This version is only available in 1040STE and 520STE machines.
  118.           It isn't available for upgrading.  It won't work in older
  119.           machines.

  121.  STE TOS, Rev 2 (TOS 1.62)
  122.  --------------
  123.  This is a slightly revised revision of TOS 1.6.  It fixes the POOLFIX
  124.  problem in GEMDOS and the problem in the Desktop that was present in
  125.  TOS 1.06.

  128.   Machines:   520STE, 1040STE
  129.  Utilities:   CACHEXXX.PRG, FOLDRXXX.PRG
