  22.         Welcome to One  Jack  ,a  different  kind  of program launcher
  23. which  supports  virtually  all  TOS   versions  and  all  replacement
  24. desktops. In a way it becomes an integral part of the pexec call.
  25.  
  26.  
  27.         A computer is a useless machine  if you  don't have any decent
  28. software for it and there also have  to be software from where one can
  29. launch the software. Now the ST range  of machines have always had the
  30. Desktop which led one run the program.  But if someone had hundreds of
  31. folders on a harddrive then  of  course  searching through all of them
  32. can be a big problem. There are many program-launcher now days and the
  33. enhanced desktop on TOS 2+ /  replacement  desktops also allows one to
  34. run a program from hot-keys ( installing program on function keys etc.
  35. ). The problem is to remember which key refere to which program .. .
  36.         Problem which different program-laucher  is  that  you have to
  37. say good-bye to the Desktop.
  38.  
  39.         One Jack attempts to solve some  of  these problems and uses a
  40. very differnt  approach.  The  program  works  as  an  accessory.  The
  41. question : "An accessory can't run a GEM program" ,may be coming up ..
  42. . but we'll come to that later.

  46. Installation
  47. """"""""""""
  48.  
  49.         Since One Jack is  an  accessory  simply copy ONE_JACK.ACC and
  50. ONE_JACK.RSC to the root-directory of  a  disk  and reboot ,or load up
  51. ONE_JACK.ACC in one of the accessory loaders.
  52.  
  53.         1_JRUN.PRG , 1_JRUN.TOS ,1_JRUN.TTP  and 1_JRUN.GTP should all
  54. be copied to the root directory of a  disk. Note : These are all DUMMY
  55. programs!!! But  still  they  should  be  there  ,and  should  also be
  56. preferably installed on Function keys. If  you never use (for example)
  57. .GTP programs then this can be deleted from the disk.

  59.         Now select One Jack from the acc menu.

  65.         The first time you'll  select  One  Jack  a short postcardware
  66. reminder will come up. Click on OK.
  67.         Now the main menu will appear ,here you'll see 33 boxes(slots)
  68. ,which should all  be  empty  (unless  a  ONE_JACK.JSM  file was auto-
  69. loaded) .
  70.  
  71.         If the slot was not empty (and you clicked on a slot) then the
  72. file (corresponding to the slot) will  be selected (ready to run) ,and
  73. One Jack will exit. To actually run the program click on x_JRUN.nnn. x
  74. may be 1 or A ,nnn may be  PRG,TOS,TTP or GTP (see below for more info
  75. abou this).
  76.         If you wan't to reedit  an  not  empty  slot  then hold down a
  77. [Shift] key while clicking on the slot.
  78. Note: x_JRUN.nnn are ALL DUMMY programs.  They require NO loading (and
  79. of course no extra memory) at all  ,and  can be replaced with any file
  80. of any kind!!!!

  83. Upto 66 program files may at once be in the memory. To access the next
  84. 33 slots click on the - up and down arrow button - which you'll see on
  85. the bottom right corner. To come back to the first 33 slots reclick on
  86. the up-down-arrow button.

  89.         To install a program simply  click  on  any of the empty slots
  90. ,either in the first 33-boxes or  the last 33-boxes. The file-selector
  91. will pop-up. Select a file (.PRG,.APP,.GTP,.TOS or .TTP). and click on
  92. OK. Now the prgoram installer menu will come up.
  93.  
  94. Following settings may be altered:
  95.  
  96.  
  97.         Heading:  This is the heading  which  will be displayed in the
  98. slot ,it doesn't have any other  meaning  at  all. It can be any thing
  99. from the name  of  program  (XX.PRG)  or  (Xx)  or  whatever you like.
  100. Clicking on Centre will centre the heading for you!
  101.  
  102.         File: The file name ,with  the  full directory should be here.
  103. This will automatically be selected so you don't really need to fiddle
  104. with that. The file name can also be selected by Selcet (see below)
  105.  
  106.         Select: Clicking on this will  bring  up the fileselector ,and
  107. the file selected from here will be displayed in the File: (see above)
  108. place.
  109.  
  110.         Directory: Here you can select  between [Leave alone] and [Set
  111. to file]..
  112.           [Leave alone]: If you select  this then the setted directory
  113. will NOT be altered at all.
  114.           [Set to file]: The directory will  always be set to the file
  115. to run (when you execute the program by x_JRUN.xxx)
  116.  
  117.                 As an example  you  have  a  file D:\EDITOR\EDITOR.PRG
  118. installed in a slot. If  you  select  [Leave alone] the directory will
  119. not be altered. Now when you run  say 1_JRUN.PRG and the directory way
  120. E:\ASM\DEVPAC\ then the  E:\ASM\DEVPAC\  directory  will  be selected.
  121. This _can_ make -Resource file not found- errors.
  122.                 On the other side if  you  had  selected [Set to file]
  123. and  run  1_JRUN.PRG  then  the  directory   will  always  be  set  to
  124. D:\EDITOR\.
  125.                 If you don't understand it  much  then simply leave it
  126. as [Set to file].

  129.         The next options are Parameters :
  130.                 [No] : No pre-defined  parameters.  If  you will enter
  131. any parameters in the .GTP ,.TTP  dialog then the same parameters will
  132. be passed to calling application. Otherwise One Jack won't do anything
  133. with them.
  134.                 [Ask]: When you'll click on  the  slot of this program
  135. then a dialog-box will come  up  ,asking  for  any parameters. All put
  136. commands are also interrupted (see below).

  138.                 [Defined] : Enter the parameters  in the editable line
  139. next to this option and  the  same  parameters  will  be passed to the
  140. application. No need  to  reenter  the  parameters  ,as  they  will be
  141. remembered! All put commands are also interrupted (see below).

  143.         Click on [OK] to exit back to the main menu.
  144.         Clicking on  [Select  this]  will  automatically  select  this
  145. program ,One Jack will exit and  the  prgoram  will be ready to run by
  146. x_JRUN.nnn.
  147.  
  148.         At the main menu (If you  are  there)  clcik  on a sot where a
  149. file has been installed and click  on  it  to select it. One Jack will
  150. now exit and the prgoram will be ready to run by x_JRUN.nnn.

  153.         The selected program may  now  be  run  by  double clicking as
  154. normal on 1_JRUN.PRG  ,1_JRUN.TOS,1_JRUN.TTP  or  1_JRUN.GTP. As these
  155. programs are just 'dummies' they  won't  load  at  all ,and in reality
  156. your program will run instantly! If you have installed x_JRUN.nnn on a
  157. function key then it's a simple matter  to press that function key. If
  158. your desktop allows it  then  these  programs  can  be  dragged to the
  159. dektop.
  160.         Anyway all x_JRUN.nnn start with 1  or  A  (  x=1 or x=A ) and
  161. they will normaly be displayed in the top of the window.

  164.         Put commands:
  165.         =============

  167.                 In all parameters you may  enter special 'commands' to
  168. do something special. These all start with an %.
  169.  
  170. %p ,%f:
  171.         To input a file name selected  using  the file selector use %f
  172. or %p. The file selector will come up when you [Select this] ,or click
  173. on the slot where (%f,%p) is prefdeined  as  parameter : %f : Only the
  174. file name will be passed. %p :  Both  the file name and directory will
  175. be passed.
  176.  
  177.         Example
  178.  
  179.                 You  have   a   pre-defined   text   as   :   %p   for
  180. D:\EDITOR\EDITOR.PRG.  Now  when  you  will  click  on  the  slot  for
  181. EDITOR.PRG then the file selector will  come  up and the file selected
  182. will be passed (full directory) to EDITOR.PRG when you run x_JRUN.nnn.

  184.                 Things  can  be  made  complicated.  Normally  to  get
  185. verbose listning in a LZH file you enter parameters as :
  186. v -h file.lzh *.* . For LHARC.TTP pre-define the text as :
  187. v -h %p *.*. Now whenever you'll  click  on the slot for LHARC.TTP the
  188. file selector will come up. Select the  file tp verbose list and click
  189. on Ok. The next thing to do  is to run 1_JRUN.TOS and verbose listning
  190. of the selected file will automatically  come up!!! Clever use of this
  191. can help you much!  You  can  have  different  settings for LHARC ,for
  192. verbose listning ,extracting etc.

  194.                 You are not limited to having  only  one %p or %f in a
  195. parameter you can have as many as you wish. And on EACH %p/%f the file
  196. selector will appear!
  197. Example for LHARC: a -h %p %p
  198. Guess what it will do! The file  selector will appear twice ,the first
  199. time select the file  to  add  to  (F:\TEST.LZH)  ,and the second time
  200. select (A:\FILE.TXT). Now run  1_JRUN.TOS.  The  file A:\FILE.TXT will
  201. automatically be added to the archive F:\TEST.LZH!

  204. %u:     Unite (Merge) parameters.
  205.  
  206.         This will replace %u in  the  parameter  to whatever you input
  207. using the standard (GEM) parameter box.
  208.  
  209.         Example: To get verbose listing from LHARC.TTP you would use :
  210. v -h file.lzh *.*  ,replace it with   v -h %u *.*
  211. Now click on the n_JRUN.TTP/GTP ,the parameter box of the desktop will
  212. now appear. Enter (only) name of the file to verbose list say (EX.LZH)
  213. and press Return. Now  One  Jack  will  automatically  replace %u with
  214. EX.LZH! The final parameter passed will be like this:
  215. v -h EX.LZH *.*
  216.  
  217. The %u put command will be very  useful.  You may simply drag the file
  218. to the n_JRUN.xxx and the  file  will automatically be verbose listed!
  219. Try the above example and drag a LZH file to n_JRUN.xxx.
  220. Again you can have as many  %u  in  a  parameter  as you wish ,and all
  221. these %u,%p,%f may be freely mixed.

  224. The put (%) commands are of course  not  limited to LHARC use ,you can
  225. use them in almost  every  application  and  sooner  or later you will
  226. notice the time you save!
  227.  
  228. Remember that NO spaces are put at the start and end of a %u ,%f or %p
  229. replacement. So   x -h%p %p     will  most  likely won't work as there
  230. are no sapces between -h and %p.

  234. History Buffer
  235. """"""""""""""
  236.  
  237.         Clicking  on  History   Buffer   from   the   main  menu  will
  238. automatically show the last 8 files  ran (either through One Jack ,the
  239. Desktop or whatever). The  parameters  passed  (if  any)  will also be
  240. displayed and you may reedit  them.  Again  all put commands are fully
  241. useable. To run such a file simply click on the -files name- ,One Jack
  242. will now exit and it's  a  simple  matter  to  run th program by using
  243. x_JRUN.nnn. This can be very  helpful  for  .TTP programs as you won't
  244. need to enter the same (or  almost  the  same) parameter over and over
  245. again.

  250.  
  251.         This will call up our  file-viewer  SuperView  ,if you have it
  252. installed in the memory.

  255. Preferences

  258.         Clear top line  :   [Yes]  :  This  will  clear  the  top line
  259. whenever you run a program via  x_JRUN.nnn.   On the normal Desktop it
  260. won't clear the whole line ,but  on many replacement desktop this will
  261. work very well.
  262.                             [No]   :  This  won't  clear  the top line
  263. ,and for example 1_JRUN.PRG may be shown here ,naturally your selected
  264. program will run but this name will be shown.

  267.         Interrupt %p,%f,%u : [Yes] :   Put commands (%f,%u,%p) will be
  268. interrupted in the command line. See above for more bout Put-commands.
  269.                              [No]  :   Put  commands  will  siamply be
  270. ignored.

  273.         Abort if GEM program ran in  TOS  mode  : [Yes] : Sometimes it
  274. may happen that you  incidently  click  on  1_JRUN.TOS when you should
  275. have clicked on 1_JRUN.PRG. Running a GEM prgoram in TOS mode can even
  276. make the system crash. So here it  it  is ,select [Yes] ,and if you do
  277. run a .PRG/.APP/.GTP program in TOS  mode  then a warning message will
  278. come up.
  279.                                                    [No]  :  No warning
  280. message will appear if you run a .PRG in TOS mode!
  281.

  283.         Screen buffering :  [Yes]  :  All  the  dialogs  will  be made
  284. dragable.
  285.                             [No]   :  No dragable dialog boxes.
  286.  
  287.         If you move a dialog box  and  you see 'trails' behind then it
  288. means that there is not enough  memory  left  in your machine to allow
  289. full dragging of dialog boxes! It's not dangerious.

  292.         x_JRUN.nnn  x is [A] :  the  only legal 'dummy' programs which
  293. will run  One  Jack  selected  programs  are  A_JRUN.PRG  ,A_JRUN.TOS,
  294. A_JRUN.GTP and A_JRUN.TTP.
  295.                            [1]  :    same  as  above  ,but  change the
  296. A_... to 1_....
  297.         You may ask why  this  option  is  here?  It doesn't have much
  298. meaning but a few  machines  may  complain  if  the  first letter in a
  299. prgoram name is not a letter...  Remember to change the programs files
  300. name if you change  it  ,otherwise  the  friendly  TOS error will come
  301. up... .

  306.         All these options may be saved  from  the [Save] option in the
  307. main menu ,and all the slots will also  be saved in the same file. The
  308. recommened extension is .JSM.  If  a  file  ONE_JACK.JSM exsits on the
  309. loading of One Jack accessory then it will be automatically loaded.
  310.         [Load] : This will load a new slot file.

  313.         [Shutdown] : If you wan't  to  delete/Unload One Jack from the
  314. memory or change resolutions then always  [Shut down] first. This will
  315. remove any vectors in the memory used by One Jack.

  320. - x_JRUN.APP is not (yet)  supported.  However install these prgograms
  321. as normal and run them by x_JRUN.PRG.

  323. - To erase a slot select  it  by  holding [Shift] while clicking on it
  324. and erase the heading by pressing [Esc]. Click on OK.

  330. has gone into making it what it is  today.  So if you use it more than
