THE ON-LINE HANDBOOK
Ray Hammond
Fontana
£4.95
If you are looking for a chatty but not trite book about computer
communications, then try this one for size. There are down to
earth explanations of nearly all the terms which you will need to
be aware of before getting productive use out of your modem. There
are also numerous suggestions for people and computers to
communicate with.
Perhaps my main gripe with Hammond is over one of his early
comments that it needn't cost a fortune. Technically he may be
right, but those tales of £200+ phone bills are true. So beware,
it CAN cost a fortune if you don't ration yourself carefully.
Of necessity, his list of Bulletin Boards is out of date (even the
lists in the magazines are a bit inaccurate), but there are many
other places to find out who's there - see On-Disc Issue 4. His
list of on-line databases is a bit dated too, but neither of these
comments are particularly serious.
Perhaps the best feature of the book is his enthusiasm which is
obvious all the way through. It can be fun swopping messages with
complete strangers via a computer 200 miles away at midnight, and
it shows that Hammond has felt this thrill too.
However, he doesn't neglect the more serious side of comms - the
enormous numbers of on-line databases out there. It's a truism
that anything you want to learn about is available via somesone's
mainframe. Unfortunately many of these charge, and accessing the
foreign ones can be expensive - even with PSS (yes, he explains
about that too, in chapter 9). But it is staggering to relaise
just what is available.
The book is full of examples, from diagrams of RS-232 connections
to sample diagloges with BLAISE-LINE and DIALOG. He deals with a
minimum of theory or confusion, and a maximum of good practical
advice and example.
Before you ask - no there's nothing about hacking!
