What the Papers Say
It's official - well sort of! By autumn a laptop ST should be
available in the shops. Presumably you will have to roll the mouse
about on your trouser legs - or possibly someone elses trouser
leg. So next time you get acosted on the train by some clown who
just wants to use you leg, pitty him/her, the problem might have
been caused by big Jack T!
.oOo.
It's offciial - well sort of (part 2)! A unix ST will be on the
streets within 12 months. Quite what the average ST buyer in the
UK will do with Unix is uncertain - except get horribly confused.
If Atari loose the high resolution GEM type front-end it will be a
crying shame. There again, perhaps it's intended as a front-end
to the Abaq (no, no-one seems to know what to do with that yet
either!).
.oOo.
If you want an impressive graphics package, the look for Imagio.
It won't be cheap (£200 or so), but it can pack about a thousand
pictures per 1Mb disc, and display the at 20 pictures per second.
That is FAST!

Who ever heard of a computer manufacturer lending their name to a
computer show and then not turning up? Here's a clue -- who won't
be at the Atari show?
.oOo.
Everyone knows that the price of RAM chips has doubled recently,
hence the price increases. But hold on a minute, there are 8 RAM
chips in the 520, and the price increase has been about $5 each,
that makes $40 or about £30. So why the £100 price increase? And,
of course, why is the 1040 not going up by £200? Could it be that
Atari are trying to make a little more profit out of the ST?
.oOo.
It seems that Atari are going to be selling their machines to the
USSR. I wonder how that one avoids the COCOM restrictions? Perhaps
the US government don't feel the the Russians are likely to put a
520STFM in the nose of each SS-20 missile - perhaps there isn't
enough room for the mouse? You can bet your life that they
wouldn't let Uncle Clive do it though.
.oOo.
In case some of you hadn't noticed, ST Update has returned after a
short leave of absence. In common with most magazines, once you
take away the software reviews (why does EVERYONE review the same
software at the same time? - don't worry, I know the answer),
there's very little left. An article about Infocom, and that's
about it really. It's a shame, but I hope that it expands into
something a it more meaty soon.
.oOo.
Another recent arrival is ST Action, from the same stable as ST
World. The layout and approach are what you would expect from
Gollner, but this time it's all in colour. This one is quite open
about it - an enormous series of software reviews, ranging as you
might expect from the quite detailed, to the trite. Personally I
like the style of Gollner's publications, although the content
doesn't interest me enough to buy it every month.
.oOo.
There are rumours of a new ST/Amiga magazine about the hit the
streets this month. Called ST/Amiga Format, it will include a disc
suitable for both machines, and cost about £2.50. I'll let you
know.
