Barcelona
~~~~ BARCELONA ~~~~
===================
~~~~ PART 1 OF ~~~~
===================
~~~~ THE ROUND THE WORLD SERIES ~~~~
====================================
~~~~ BY MARK HITCH ~~~~
=======================
One of the many places I enjoyed on my travels around the world was
Barcelona - The second largest city in Spain.
After France, Spain is the second largest country in Europe. It also
includes the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands - which are made up of
the popular holiday islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Formentera and Ibiza.
Over the last few years there has been a drift by the Spanish from the
countryside to the cities and tourist resorts for work.
Tourism employs about one tenth of all Spanish workers. Money spent by
tourists helps Spain to develop services, such as health care. The two
largest cities, Madrid and Barcelona, contain about one quater of Spains
entire population and the majority of city people live in apartments rather
than houses.
The family is very important in Spanish society. The Mother tends to be the
centre of the family, and used to spend most of her time at home. Under
Genral Franco (who was Head of State between 1939 and 1975), women had to
get a certificate giving their husband's approval before they could take up
a job. Up until ten years ago, nine out of ten young people lived with
their immediate family, or with another relation. This situation is
changing now and young people are gaining their independance.
The most popular spectator sport is soccer, although golf and winter sports
are becoming more and more popular, both to watch and to do. Probably the
best known golfer is Severiano Ballesteros.
Newspapers were heavily censored from 1939 - 1975 but the freedom of the
press was guaranteed in 1978. TV is extremley popular (especially foreign
soaps, dubbed in Spanish) with two goverment-run channels and two private
stations.
Spain is one of Europe's top agricultural countries and is the world's top
producer of olive oil. It is Western Europe's biggest exporters of cars.
Fashion is also big buisness now, with superb collections of clothes being
manufactured and exported.
Traditionally, everything used to happen much later in the day than Britain,
mainly due to the long afternoon break when workers and children would go
home for lunch. Nowadays, though, the Goverment and some employers want a
continuous 8 hour day in line with the buisness world of other European
countries.
Barcelona is world famous for its buildings. Some were built as early as in
the Middle Ages, but probably the most famous and spectacular are those
built during the 1900s during the so-called Modernistic period.
One of the main architects of the Modernistic period was Gaudi, whose
buildings use every kind of material and shape to express what he wanted.
Antonio Gaudi Cornet was born in 1852 and dies at the age of 74 in 1926.
Gaudi was hailed as a genius of architecture and most of his work was
concentrated on Barcelona.
Not only was he a great architect, but he was also a magnificent sculptor.
His work makes walking around Barcelona a fasinating place and extraordianry
experience, because of his great orginality and this was one of the reasons
why I enjoyed it there so much.
However, not all of Barcelona is old. The Olympic Village was built in
1992 not only to accomadate modate athletes, umpires and so on but also to
provide the neccessary sports facilities. Much of the city was cleaned up
and restored in preperation for the Olympics, making a wonderful city to
visit.

A NOTE FROM POWER:
This article is just one of many that will be appearing in future editions
of POWER following Mark Hitch's travels around the world. For more
information read the 'AROUND THE WORLD' article, just above this one in the
list under the 'ARTICLES' heading if you haven't already read it.
I would like to see more of these kind of articles but could I PLEASE have
some computer related articles aswell as we haven't had any this month and
although they don't HAVE to be computer related, I would like a few.
Keep any articles coming in though and you will be fully credited!
