A translators' tool for the Atari ST
David Harvey November 1990
V0.9
1. Introduction
STRAN was initially developed for personal use as a
dictionary tool for aiding in the translation of the documentaion
of some of the excellent German PD and budget software available
through the ST Club, the German magazine ST Computer, and other
sources. This PD release is designed as a demonstration of the
tool, and consists of a .PRG version of the program, and an
(extremely) basic German dictionary of c. 50 common computer-
related words.
I plan to release a more comprehensive suite of programs as a
budget-priced package early in 1991. This will include:
- a .ACC version of the basic program, allowing it to be
used from within a word processor;
- utilities to import, export and print dictionaries;
- a tool to scan source files for unique words;
- a German-English dictionary of 2000+ words;
- complete documentation;
- support for colour monitors.
2. Hardware
Atari ST 512K or greater, single-sided disk drive, monochrome
monitor (or mono emulator)
3. Files
TRANS.PRG - the program itself
TRANSRES.RSC - GEM resource file
TRANS.CFG - configuration file
SAMPLE.DAT
SAMPLE.IDX - sample dictionary files
STRAN09.DOC - this documentation file
FORM.TXT - form to request further information
Both resource and configuration files must be in the directory
from which STRAN was loaded.
The file TRANS.CFG identifies an initial dictionary for STRAN.
The format is as follows:
<BOF>
A:\STRAN
SAMPLE
<EOF>
Line 1 contains the path in which the default dictionary files
are to be found. Line 2 contains the name of the dictionary
(without .DAT or .IDX extensions). If the default dictionary
cannot be found, you will be prompted to create a new one.
3. Operation
STRAN is intended to be simple and intuitive to use. Help is
available (click on [HELP]), and all button actions can be
performed using short-cut keys (click on [KEYS]). A new
dictionary may be loaded or created at any time ([NEW]). To enter
text in either text field, first click on the field with the
mouse pointer.
4. Details of STRAN v1.0
If you have enjoyed using this demonstration version of STRAN and
would like details of the full product when they become
available, complete the form in the file FORM.TXT, print it out
and send it to me at the address shown on the form. If you have
any comments or suggestions, please feel free to add them - I may
incorporate ideas I find useful into later versions of STRAN,
although please note that I do not intend supporting the
demonstration version (0.9).
