| |¯¯¯ =========| CHIT CHAT
| ¯¯¯¯| //
|-------/
BY JAMES L. MATHEWS
"Oh dear!" I hear you cry, "It's that bloody column again,
Chit Chat!", well I know that it is dreadful to have to read page
after page of my drivel, but it helps extract it from the other
articles although some may disagree with that.
Anyway, I was flicking through a few Amiga mags the other day out
of interest. I was looking especially at the letters pages (to
see what kind of dicks wirte in) and the P.D sector (to see what
kind of P.D they have on offer). Anyway, firstly, in the letters
column it was nothing apart from readers disagreeing about which
game is the best and what cheats anyone knows. It wasn't a
letters section, it was more like a gaming section although I
suppose that's what an Amiga mag is - One big gaming section!!!
Next up was the P.D Sector, this was just one big list of P.D
games. I really could not believe it. Okay, I knew that Amiga's
were known for their games but I really didn't see a single P.D
program that wasn't a game.
I then just flicked through the mags quickly and I noticed a few
P.D.L adverts. There were loads of them, much more than we have
on the ST. Anyway, they were all incredibly cheap. The most
expensive P.D.L price I saw was £1.25 a disk for any amount.
That included postage and packaging and everything! Most prices
were about 70 or 80p per disk plus 50p postage and packaging for
orders under £5. I even saw a P.D.L that was selling disks which
seemed full to the brim for 55p a disk all expenses paid. It
boasted padded envelopes, quality disks and all the normal stuff
expected from a P.D.L and I wondered how the hell the price of a
disk, first class stamp and padded envelope fitted into the price
of 55p! I know they bulk buy but I mean....That was the price
for any amount of disks too, not for some stupid amount. I even
saw a few P.D.L's that also cater for the ST. Without naming any
P.D.L, there is one that sells disks for £1.50 to £2 on the ST
but on the Amiga it sells disks for just £1 all expenses paid.
Why?! How comes P.D is cheaper on the Amiga, it's not as if they
use different disks which are cheaper or something so how comes
we can be paying up to £3 a disk and the highest Amiga owners
have to pay is £1.25. A blank disk costs about 50p each anyway,
pay 5p more and you get a whole disk of P.D on it as well from a
certain Amiga P.D.L. I just don't understand this and actually
think it's unfair. I haven't seen Amiga P.D though so I don't
know what the quality is like but even so, P.D is supposed to be
free and just covers the cost of the disk and postage and a
little wear and tear. If Atari and Amiga both use the same
disks, have roughly the same copying time and so on, then why the
big price difference? With some P.D.L's you could get about 5
disks in the 55p Amiga P.D.L for every 1 disk in the £3 ST P.D.L.
Anyone got any suggestions why? I may actually use this as a
talking point for this month as I really want to know why this
goes on.
Anyway, it seems that already I have chit chatted out of chit
chat so let me think of some more drivel to write about...
You know that this column was actually inspired by POWERFIST
LICENCEWARE as on most of their disks, they have a regular little
section called ramblings which is a small text file of about 5 to
10k which is just a load of general talk such as this column is.
I have written a ramblings and I went on and on and ended up with
a 20k text file full of pure advertising for POWER virtually so
look out for that one!
When I started off this column it was really easy to think of
stuff to say and I really enjoyed it but now, I sit here thinking
of the things I can say and then smile when I realise that I am
wasting space by saying that I am trying to think of something to
say (ha ha!!!).
Oh, I love the world of disk magazines, it's all so much
friendlier. Communication is so much stronger with a disk based
magazine that with the glossy ones and it makes all the
difference. While you take in the radiation output from the
screen, you are also taking in love, affection and warm
heartedness which I have cleverly programmed to be emitted from
your screen.....Honest!!!
Anyway, I'm talking utter crap that no body is interested in so
I'm off for now and as I am, I'm sure you are all looking forward
to issue 10 of POWER if not just to read the next chit chat. See
you then!
