This is a good little game produced by Chris Sharp from Supreme
Software who is actually the kind bloke that is now writing the
monthly STOS HELP CORNER column and articles.
Long ago, a spaceship was on course for a distant planet called
Utopia. Sadly, the clever old blokes that launched it
miscalculated the flight and the ship was lost in a time band
(sob sob!).
Many years later (this is the plot I am desribing here by the
way!), man found the crashed ship but the aliens were not there.
They then found where the aliens had fled to and this place was
called "Magic Tomb".
Being the stupid race we are, the humans had an urge to explore
Magic Tomb. Six men went in, only one man survived. The
remaining man is YOU and you have to find your way out of this
massive tomb.
Right, well that's the plot, now more about the game itself.
It was programmed in STOS and is a Shareware game that asks for a
£5 registration fee. You can obtain a copy from me or Chris
Sharp (his address is in his articles) by sending a blank disk
and S.S.A.E.
The game has a brilliant front end to it. You chuck in the disk
and after a few whirring noises from the disk drive, you are
produced with a screen that prints information about the game on
to the screen, basically saying that it is Shareware etc. There
is a decent, atmospheric ABK module playing while you read and
once you've finished, you press the mighty space bar and the disk
starts whirring again. After a few more seconds you have a funky
screen telling you to press space while an excellent module plays
along and a short message is displayed at the top. Although all
you have to do is press space, I sat there for quite a while
taking in the excellent music until it was finished. I then did
as I was told and pressed space.
Then I was greeted by a funky chip tune and asked if I wanted to
enter a password or start the game. Well, I didn't have a
password so I started the game.
The excellent chip tune was getting even better as I saw the tomb
and my man for the first time.
The graphics are quite good and are nice and big including your
man who you control who is a great big sprite who you can really
feast your eyes on. It looks quite good as does the tomb
although the graphic updating can sometimes be a bit slow making
the sprite have a distorted line. This only happens every now
and then though and generally movement is very good with some
good animation and responsive controls.
The first few levels are quite small and easy to get through as
there aren't any baddies but later levels have baddies who are
full of anger and are out to kill (they found out about you being
a tax man before you became an astronaut!). This is where I
really tested the game as many STOS games have bad collision
detection but no, I died fair and square...Damn! Now I had lost
a life. I tried a few more times on other baddies and the
collision detection was still very good which meant that you
couldn't be a mile away and die or you could walk straight
through a baddie without any problems. Many games fall on their
collision detection so this is a real plus.
Many of the baddies were easy to get past on earlier levels but
things start to get much harder as timing becomes more critical
and the mazes get much bigger and harder. In a game like this
you can get really annoyed because you've gone the wrong way and
you can't start again. Well, if you come up against this problem
in Magic Tomb, you can simply press the space bar.
Well, once all your lives have gone and you're screaming at the
computer asking if you can have just one more life you are
presented with a decent high score table with a starfield and
some cool music....A module again! Great stuff!
There are loads of levels and game play can get a bit repetitive
but on a whole is quite a good game which will keep you there
trying to find the right route for ages. The password system
helps a lot as well but it still won't stop you from screaming
your head off when you see the end of level but get splattered by
one of the aliens!
~~ POWERFUL ~~
Massive game playing area.
Loads of levels.
Password system.
Loads of great modules and musix.
Good graphics.
Great front end.
Keep you going back for more.
Good collision detection.
~~ POWERLESS ~~
Can be a bit repetitive.
Could disturb the neighbours with your screaming when you die
just as you're about to finish the level.
Graphics update can sometimes be a bit slow.

POWER COMMENT:
"This is a great little game but as I said to Chris, there was
one major bad point - My 6 year old brother can get further than
me!!!"
