=================================================================
Firstly let me explain that this is NOT one of those STOS is
better than C or STOS is better than GFA etc etc Articles, what I
really want to do is dispell the rumors concerning STOS and its
merits as a serious computer language for the ST.
Everyone at some time must have read an article or had a
conversation about computer programming, and when STOS is
mentioned it's always the same thing; STOS is only good for the
beginner, or STOS is for making shoot 'em ups, many times I have
read such magazines as ST FORMAT and ST USER etc, they
unfortunatly are the worst offenders, along with other magazines
they always answer letters concerning STOS with such comments as
"STOS is good for utilising the screen and making games with
sprites, although they usually turn out jerky and are not of the
best quality", some P.D.L.'s will not stock STOS written programs,
the ST CLUB being the main culprit for this.
Anyone thinking of starting out in the programming world will
allmost definatly be put off buying STOS after reading such
rubbish , yes rubbish, well let us first of all dispell a few of
the above points.
I am the first to agree that there are a lot of badly written
STOS programs doing the rounds, in fact to be honest I myself
released a few programs that I am now ashamed to be associated
with. At the time I thought they were perfect, as most
programmers think they have made the best program they can with
the knowledge they hold, then a few months later they have learnt
more and as time passes they realise that they could have made
there programs ten times better, hence the need for upgrades.
Thats why you keep seeing V.1.3 etc etc, to be honest it is not
the fault of STOS that there are bad programs about, it is in
fact the fault of the programmer, I include myself in this
catagorie , I have of course seen many well made exellent
programs that have been written in STOS , not just games either,
I have seen copiers , formatters , even fullly working Sector
editors.
One of the biggest problems people seem to think is the fact
that MANDARIN SOFTWARE no longer upgrade STOS, in fact they are
totally dissinterested in there product, well thats true , They
just do not want to know, well who needs them, we have the
language and we also have our own upgrades in the form of
extensions , these are extra commands that after a once only very
easy instalation , they give you a wide array of extra commands
to use, In fact I have started using two new extensions that have
just recently been released , they give me over eighty extra
commands to use, It is now possible to make a program or game
that will come up to the standard of anything made in machine
code , or any other low level language.
Yes STOS does of course have bad points but nothing that cannot
be overcome, Yes STOS does crash\lock up , but this only happens
when you are using such things as chip music or samples or you
are disk accesing etc, ( well normally thats when it happens ) ,
It is easy enough to get into the habit of saving your program at
regular intervals, all it is is a mouse click and its saved, in
fact my computer didn't lock up for the first year or so, it was
only when I really got into programming, ie: using peeks and
pokes etc.
Do not believe everything you hear about STOS , most of the
comments are from people who have not tried to program with it,
but have viewed badly made games and come to the conclusion that
it is the fault of STOS, if you have ever seen the commercial fun
school series, the biggest selling eductional software on the ST,
well they are made with pure STOS, ie: no machine code routines
and none of the exelent extensions that are now available, STOS
is not for the beginer, even the manual states that it presumes
you have a working knowledge of BASIC and that you cannot learn
to program using the STOS manual.
It is possible to learn STOS from the begining and not having to
learn basic first, there are courses available by way of a new
manual that has been released , but at just under forty quid that
is a little expensive, there is of course my diskzine STOSSER
that not only has a monthly tutorial for the absolout beginer,
but also tutorials on BASIC, STOS 3D,ADVENTURE CREATING etc etc.
So with the use of extensions such as the missing link and misty
it is possible to make good STOS written programs, the next time
you see a program that looks bad, don't blame STOS, blame the
programmer!
This is Tony Greenwood Signing off............Bye
