Cholesterol, we know it's bad for us but we NEED cholesterol.
This month sees how we can cut down on cholesterol, but also why
it is so important for the body. This series will be continued
next month.
* * * * *
Over recent years cholesterol has been linked with foods that the
experts say are bad for us and can lead to heart problems, but
how much do we really know abou it?
For instance, did you know that we can't live without cholesterol
or that our bodies produce more than double the amount we can eat
in food?
***** WHAT IS CHOLESTEROL? *****
Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is an essential part of
every cell in our bodies. The body's cholesterol is important to
our central nervous system - The brain and spinal cord. It forms
an important part of the substance which provides a vital
insulating function, a bit like the plastic insulating cover on
electrical wires.
* * * * *
Cholesterol is also found in our blood and is a large part of the
fatty substance that can build up in our arteries and may lead to
heart disease.
* * * * *
The cholesterol in our bodies comes from two different sources.
It occurs naturally in foods we eat such as eggs, liver, kidney
and shellfish and also our bodies produce cholesterol for
themselves. In fact, if we don't give our bodies enough
cholesterol in the food we eat, then almost every cell will
start to increase the amount it produces.
***** REDUCING CHOLESTEROL *****
Different things affect how much cholesterol our bodies make, for
instance, saturated fats and smoking increase the level and
polyunsaturated fat, excercise and some types of fibre decrease
it.
* * * * *
So, by watching what we eat, especially saturated fats, not
smoking and doing some excercise two to three times a week we can
reduce the risk of heart problems as we get older. And we'll
feel better too!
