CRIME CITY
COMMERCIAL GAME
REVIEWED BY JAMES L. MATHEWS
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This is a commercial game, but I don't know how much it sells for as I've
never seen it before and I didn't buy it...I was given it so if you're
interested in buying the game after reading this review, then er...You'll
have to get details yourself I'm afraid.
Crime City is one of those 'point and click' interactive games such as
MONKEY ISLAND 2. It involves you using the mouse and clicking on items and
moving about via clicking on things. The result is a game which you get
very involved in and is very realistic in many cases.
Crime City puts you in control of a son, who's Father has been convicted of
murder wrongly (that's justice for ya!) and you have to prove that he is
innocent and show the police who the REAL murder is.
You start the game in your office with a computer, filo fax, phone, letters
and various other items which may prove to be useful. By clicking on a
map, you can move to other places and in those places, such as the
Hospital, you can move about to different rooms looking for people to
interview and any clues or evidence you might find.
You can interact with characters by choosing one of a number of pre-set
replies and everything is against the clock. You get tired, need sleep,
have a certain amount of money, can travel in many different ways, and
basically, it is all very real to life.
The graphics aren't blocky and are well drawn but are slightly basic...If
you know what I mean. There is no animation (or none that I have seen
anyway), but there hardly ever is in games like this.
Between each room change or serious examination, there is usually a brief
loading time which makes you wait. This can be a bit annoying but seeing
as the game is all crammed onto one disk, it isn't half as annoying as
games such as CRUISE FOR A CORPSE where you have to change the disks all
the time.
There isn't much sound, and when there is, it's just basic chip tune stuff,
but again, sound in these games is a bonus and although it isn't needed is
a nice touch, such as the music in the pub and so on.
There is loads to do in the game, puzzles to solve and a hell of a lot to
take into account and work out and this isn't a game that you can just load
up for half an hour and then put away. This game will take many sleepless
nights before you solve it, yet the difficulty level is just right. The
game doesn't have you searching all over the world for an item which is in
your pocket like some adventures and it is all very lateral and logical and
common sense will get you far (maybe that's why I'm so bad at the game!).
The game will keep you enthralled for ages and it's not a game that you get
bored of easily as there is just so much to keep you interested and it
isn't all preset. For example, you don't simply go around to all the
places looking for proof, one action leads to others, just like asking
someone out, may lead to getting information which THEN leads to a bit of
evidence.
Another good thing about the game is that it is very easy to get into
unlike some other games of this type. There's no long intros or long
procedures to go through until the adventure really starts and there isn't
loads and loads of complicated icons either.
It's all very good stuff and very well done and well worth getting if
you've got the cash and you see it for sale.
One of my mates has got very close to finishing this game but has got stuck
so if anyone out there has already completed this game and can provide any
help or a solution for him, please get in touch.
