CAN SOFTWARE DAMAGE HARDWARE #2
BY CHRIS SHARP
****************************************************************************
Can Software damage Hardware?
Yes, it is possible. A virus written by a german programming team in 1988 did
just that. I have first hand experience of this, as I caught the virus from an
infected disk. It completely trashed my floppy disk drive, making sure that I
had to buy a new one.
That way it works is by using an Xbios call. It completely re-alligns the
floppy disk head, making all disks unreadable. The problem can ONLY be cured by
buying a new disk drive.
So, it certainly is possible for software to damage hardware. I know, as I've
had first hand experience.
Incidentaly, you may be thinking that I damaged the disk drive myself, but
thought it was a virus that did it. Well, if you are thinking that, I can
assure you that I DO know about virus's. When my drive was fixed, I examined
the virus with a disk toolkit, and their certainly was a disk wrecking virus on
it. Fortunately, I have heard that it is a VERY rare virus, and that I was
probably about the 10th person in Britain to get it. Talk about unlucky.....
