P.D.L's today have changed radically although we don't really notice
although all you have to do really, is look back to some early issue of ST
FORMAT or ST USER.
For a start, look at how many P.D.L.'s have disappeared in the last year.
The amount of regular P.D.L.'s companies has dropped dramatically.
Whatever happened to all these:
THE P.D. SOFTWARE HOUSE
CENTRAL SCOTLANDS PREMIER P.D. LIBARY
STEPPING STONES P.D.L.
PLATINUM DISKS
RIVERDENE P.D.L.
TRUST P.D.
FREAKS P.D.L.
EVPD
B-SOFT
STOS P.D.L.
SOFTVILLE P.D.
SOUTHWEST SOFTWARE LIBARY
NIGHTSHIFT P.D.
PD.ST
SEVEN DISK
PDSCC
THE ATARI DEMO SPECIALIST
EMPDL
PUBLIC DOMINATOR
Just about all of those advertised regularly in the main glossy mags and
ALL of them were very well known. Okay, so maybe one or two may still
exist but just aren't as big anymore, but I know for sure that most of
those have closed down now. But why?
SEVEN DISK was an EXCELLENT P.D.L. that sold disks for just 75p each and
operated a BRILLIANT service which was very fast and efficient. Then one
day, I made an order and the phone line was out of order. Now, some new
business has moved in.
STOS P.D.L. closed down as well and THE SOUTHWEST SOFTWARE LIBARY used to
be one of the biggest around but then folded over.
PD.ST. used to sell disks for £2 each but if you supplied your own disks,
you only had to pay 60p which covered postage and packaging and copying
charges at a very modest fee I thought.
PDSCC has even vanished and they used to be the big page adverts which used
to ask if you were crazy in big letters and then underneath told you that
if you didn't buy from them, then you must be!
ST.PD used to run a 2 page advert every month and was a leader in P.D.L.'s
but then just vanished!
Did you ever notice that all P.D.L.'s back then advertised as small 1/8th
or 1/4 page adverts and PDSCC was just about the only one that had a full
page. Now, P.D. adverts are much bigger and in two or three cases in the
latest mags, take up two whole pages. There is now a much smaller amount
of P.D.L.'s around, especially the ones that advertise in the mags. This
gives them all a monopoly over the market, especially for all the new ST
owners which don't know where else to look for P.D. apart from the big
glossy mags which they all trust (sorry if I sound patronising by saying
all this).
It's not just P.D.L.'s that have vanished though. Just look in the back of
ST USER at the ADVEERTISING DIRECTORY and then look at the one's back a few
years and look at the difference in size.
ST ACTION never used to have many P.D.L.'s advertising in their mag and now
it's completely empty of them and as far as I know ST ACTION no longer
exists as a magazine of its own.
P.D.L.'s back then used to sell nothing apart from P.D. with the exception
of a few which sold the odd commercial program but now, P.D.L's are more
like shops with P.D. as just another section of the extensive range.
Lookat WARPZONE P.D.L. for instance. I'm not writing this company off or
putting it down in any way as a company as I have never dealed with them,
but look at their two page spread adverts. It's packed with adverts for
software for making your own T-Shirts, commercial software, TOS upgrades,
Mouse mats and holders, monitor stands, drive cleaning kits, commercial
tutorials, disk boxes, blank disks and loads loads more. Just a year or
two ago, this wouldn't have been seen as a P.D.L. but slowly, P.D.L.'s have
built up their selection and rather than getting hold of new P.D., they get
hold of new hardware and commercial software that they can make bigger
profits on until the P.D. is just a sort of bonus part of the company or
like the little sweet rack in a post office or something.
P.D.L.'s used to have small adverts and didn't sell anything apart from
P.D. and maybe packs of 10 blank disks. Most of them operated as a bedroom
business and as there were so many P.D.L's to choose from, customers were
in a minority compared to today. This meant that service was better though
and much more friendly as P.D. should be. Now, however, you would be hard
pressed to get a decent letter or chat out of the current P.D.L. owners
that virtually sell houses and cars in 4 different colours.
