R.S.P.C.A.'s PLEA AGAINST
LIVE TRANSPORTATION
OF ANIMALS
by
GARY
I was shown a letter sent to one of my friends by the RSPCA about the live
transportation of live farm animals and thought it was worth asking POWER
to include it in the next issue. Along with the letter they also included a
question and answer sheet that is worth reading.
As we all spend hours each week messing about with our Atari's all I am
asking is that the next time you load up your word processor please donate
a couple of minutes of your time and write to Gillian Shepherd MP. The
address is in the letter.

Dear Ms Brown
Thank you for promising to support the RSPCA's campaign to end the
nightmare of live transportation.
We must act quickly. Even as I write, thousands of sheep, pigs and cattle
are enduring torment on their way to the slaughterhouses of Europe.
I have a shocking report on my desk, detailing some cases of the most
appalling cruelty and suffering.
To take just one example, a tip off took some of our inspectors to Calais
to follow 708 British sheep to a European slaughterhouse. After 38 hours,
the lorry driver had made numerous stops for food and drink - but he hadn't
checked the animals once.
The whole journey took 44 hours, and the sheep went without food or water
all that time in extreme temperatures. Our inspectors weren't allowed to
watch the animals being unloaded at the slaughterhouse, but it's not hard
to imagine what a horrific they must have been in.
I am disgusted by what I have read but can you imagine what it must feel
like to experience a journey like this? To spend your last hours crammed in
a truck, unable to move, terrified, exhausted, hungry, desperately thirsty.
No animal should have to end its life like this. But unless you help us
today, they will continue to suffer. Let me tell why.
New European transport laws came into effect in January, but some important
rules - giving space allowances for different species of farm animal and
how often they should be fed, watered and rested - still have to be agreed
by the European Council of Agriculture Ministers.
The RSPCA believes the current proposals on these issues just aren't strong
enough. Without your help, its likely they will be made law and the animals
will be no better off.
Strict rules must be laid down on maximum journey times; adequate resting
periods; how the new rules will be enforced; standards for livestock
vehicles and how sheep should be given food, water and rest.
If we move fast, we can make sure that when the directive becomes law, it
includes these essential rules and unnecessary suffering will be stopped
once and for all.
Will you add voice to our campaign?
Proposals will be discussed at the next meeting of the European Council for
Agriculture Ministers. Gillian Shepherd MP will take part in these
discussions and its vital therefore you write to her immediately.
If you feel strongly about live transport:
* Ask her to back the RSPCA recommendations and to press for a total
journey limit if no more than eight hours.
* Send the letter as soon as you can to;
GILLIAN SHEPHERD MP.
MINISTER FOR AGRICULTURE
MAFF
WHITEHALL PLACE
LONDON SW1A 2HH.
Please write now - Gillian Shepherd must know how strongly you feel about
this issue before the proposals are finalised.
Yours Sincerely
Jerry Lloyd
Campaign Director.

Q.....Improving the live transport laws is all very well, but why can't we
just ban the trade in live animals for slaughter.
A.....The European Community (EC) is a free trade area and there are no
longer border controls. It would be illegal for the UK to prevent animals
being transported abroad.
Q.....What are the current live transport regulations?
A.....European rules state that animals cannot be transported for more than
24 hours without food water and rest. But this rule isn't enforced and even
the European Commission admits it is broken again and again.
Q.....What are the new EC proposals to improve live transport?
A.....The EC has proposed new regulations stipulating that cattle pigs and
horses will have to be fed. watered and rested more than once every 24
hours - the current limit. The proposals vary according to species, but
sheep have been left out completely, apparently because of lack of
scientific information.
Q.....If the new proposals are adopted unchanged by the meeting of the
European Council of Agriculture Ministers, will it put an end to the
suffering?
A.....It will help, but the RSPCA believes the proposals don't go far
enough. The proposed rules do not contain;
....a maximum journey time for animals destined for slaughter
....adequate resting periods
....details of how often sheep would be given food water and rest
....plans for specially trained Inspectors to monitor and enforce the rules
....standards for livestock vehicles.
The RSPCA will continue to campaign until strict rules are laid down on
these issues and they become law.
Q.....If the proposals become law who will enforce them?
A.....At present there are no firm plans for enforcement. The RSPCA is
urging the EC to appoint teams of trained Inspectors to monitor the
enforcement of European transport laws. That's the only way to ensure the
rules aren't broken and suffering is prevented.
Q.....Is live transportation really necessary?
A.....No. In the majority of cases, the RSPCA believes animals could easily
be slaughtered much nearer to the farms where are reared. Then meat could
be transported on the hook - not the hoof - and terrible, unnecessary
suffering could be prevented.
