POWER #16 - POWER WITHOUT THE PRICE
Hi there everyone! This is James L. Mathews presenting you with the 16th
issue of POWER which is entitled, 'POWER Without The Price'...Why? Well,
because now that this disk magazine is Shareware and not licenceware, you
are getting POWER, but without the price! Obvious! Now that we're
Shareware, we can keep funds up (providing that you are honest!) but if you
don't enjoy the issue (as if you couldn't enjoy POWER!), then you don't
have to register...Anyway, for registering, you will get a few extra's but
for more information about that, read the 'REGISTERING THIS ISSUE OF POWER'
article in the 'INFO' section.
Well, as you've probably noticed by now, we're trying out a slightly
different format to usual. Please write in and tell me what you think.
This issue has seen quite a few changes actually. For one, there's the
layout in the selection menu and also in a few of the columns and regulars.
Also, we're saying goodbye to THE WEIRD CORNER and seeing the BITS AND
BOBS section returning! Also, there's the birth of quite a few new
regulars and columns including a return of the infamous Mark Hitch with a
new star signs regular which will keep you up-to-date with your stars.
We've also got another new section called 'CONTACT NEWS'. This section
contains a few lines on a few of my contacts that contribute to POWER and
what they are doing. The reason for this new section is because a lot of
you say that you want to know more about what's happening behind the
scenes. Apparently, most of you found the article I wrote a while back
about what goes into making POWER quite interesting and would like more
similar material...Well, we listen to our feedback so we'll see what we can
do for you.
Talking of feedback, we've changed the 'YOUR OPINION OF POWER' form
slightly so if you would be so kind as to fill that in for us, it will help
us to improve POWER for you.
Well, this issue is simply jam packed full of articles, reviews, features,
columns, regulars, competitions, P.D. and much more and I'll go into the
content of this issue a bit more later in this file.
This issue has been sent out to at least 300 people. That means that not
only are we the most POWERful disk mag in the ST scene but it means that we
have lots of new readers so especially for you, we have a special little
article in the 'FEATURES' section which tells you a little bit about what
you have missed and what POWER is all about.
For the benefit of those that still don't understand and also, all those
readers, let me explain what each section that POWER is split up into
means...
REGULARS - This is a part of the mag which appears every month in POWER but
doesn't require any feedback for it. E.G. The News Section.
COLUMNS - This is a part of the mag which appears every month in POWER but
requires feedback to keep it running. E.G. The Letters Column.
ADVERTS - Simply advertisements from other people.
INFO - Information on POWER etc. E.G. How to subscribe.
ARTICLES - An article is a text file which only appears once in POWER (i.e.
unlike a column or regular) and teaches you something. E.G. How to
program.
FEATURES - A feature is a text file which only appears once in POWER (i.e.
unlike column or regular) but it doesn't teach you anything. It is simply
a once off text file and although CAN be serious, usually isn't. E.G.
Jokes.
I hope that all that is clear now.
A bug has been reported which I actually knew about but I'm not sure
whether I've mentioned it or not. The bug is in this shell and although
rarely happens (if at all) HAS been spotted by a few of you. The problem
is that sometimes, when loading up a file, the screen will just go blank
and stay like that. This problem is caused by lack of memory I believe
(i.e. all you RAM has been used up). The smaller memory you have, the more
likely this is to happen. If this DOES happen, don't worry, simply turn
your computer off for about 30 seconds and then load up POWER again and all
should work fine. This will do no harm whatsoever to your beloved ST.
Another note about the shell; In a few cases, there may be a file which
seems to have come to an end but it may not have. Many people are exiting
files before the end has been reached, not realising that they had not
finished the file. To check whether you have finished or not, always check
the counter at the bottom of the screen which says what line is being
displayed out of the total amount. The counter displays the line number of
the top line on the screen. Please bare that in mind when reading a file.
With regards to this shell, we should be getting it updated in July if all
goes well but we are unable to do so at the moment due to time limitations.
We have lots of new ideas to improve the shell greatly so keep your eyes
peeled!
Changing the subject completely, I would like to admit to a mistake that I
made in issue 15 of POWER. It is to do with the review of the excellent
new release from SILLY SOFTWARE...MOBSTERS CITY. In the review, I stated
that the program had been coded in STOS; this was incorrect. Please
forgive me everyone...I know it'll be hard but I just hope that you can all
bring yourself to put this dreadful mistake behind us...I hope it won't
damage our friendship!
With regards to MOBSTERS CITY, incase you don't know what the hell I'm
talking about, it's a new game from the new licenceware company, SILLY
SOFTWARE and is sold at £2.50. It obtained a 'POWER PLUS AWARD' for
gaining a massive 90% If you would like to obtain a copy, write directly
to SILLY SOFTWARE enclosing a cheque or postal order to:
SILLY SOFTWARE
DEANO
27 TURBARY WALK
MILNROW
ROCHDALE
OL16 4JN
And ask for disk number SILLY 3. Or, alternatively, you can order a copy
from any SILLY SOFTWARE distributor. Also, in SILLY SOFTWARE, look out for
my samples disks, at this point, there are 5 in the collection, the first
of which is on disk number SILLY 4.
Incase you're interested, Deano is also trying to get rid of his old, black
and white, 9 pin printer for 35 quid so if you're interested, write to him
and get some more info.
Well, let's look into the content of this issue of POWER a bit more shall
we? Here's just a FEW of the things we have in store for you in this
issue...
Over £100 worth of prizes in competitions.
A full article on disk boxes - I bet you thought that a disk box was a disk
box, but this article explains everything there is to know about disk
boxes...Where to get 'em, what are the best ones, where they originate and
so on.
More of your STOS problems answered by Chris Sharp of The Supreme Software
Group.
An article aimed at all you music making fans from Colin Pratt of The
Gosport Fun Factory.
Another article on packing files from Ryan Simpson.
Loads of new sections.
An exclusive review of the ATARI JAGUAR console.
Loads of jokes.
Help with the Hungarian language.
An article explaining all there is to know about the basics of FASTCOPY and
copying disks...There's actually a lot more to it that you think!
Help with the Misty extension.
An exclusive interview with Phineas Pope of Merlin P.D.
Exclusive P.D.
And much, much, much, much, much, much more!!! In this issue, there are so
many quality files to read that you'll be here until next year!
Well, I think that all that needs to be said has been said so I hope that
you enjoy this first Shareware issue of POWER and remember to spread your
copies of POWER as much as possible.
See ya!
