  20. Now that POWER is Shareware, we are going to be getting lots of new 
  21. readers and for many, this issue is going to be the first issue of POWER so 
  22. I thought that I'd do a little article explaining about our aims, about 
  23. each of our columns, the history of POWER and a little bit about my dear 
  24. self.
  25.  
  26. POWER started over a year ago and we celebrated our first birthday on the 
  27. first of January of this year.  It was celebrated with a two disk issue.  
  28. We started in the P.D. scene with the ST ZINE shell.  We had a small 
  29. readership at first which then grew to about 100-150 readers by issue 7 
  30. which was the last P.D. issue.  Issue 8 then saw a change.  POWER was sold 
  31. through POWERFIST licenceware and up until issue 10 (inclusive) used the 
  32. NEWDISK shell.  Readership levels fell slightly due to the upgrade in 
  33. price.  Then, issue 11 saw a new shell (this shell) which is exclusive to 
  34. POWER in every way and will constantly be updated from July 
  35. onwards...Hopefully.  However, issue 15 (last month) was the last 
  36. licenceware issue of POWER as it was too restrictive.  POWER was only 
  37. selling through 4 P.D.L.'s and spreading of the 'zine was not allowed.  
  38. This meant that we were limiting our readership greatly.  Now, we are 
  39. expecting a readership of 300 or so although many think we can get a much 
  40. higher readership...Well, this is yet to be seen.  Anyway, as you can see, 
  41. we are now in the Shareware scene and intend to keep it that way as we need 
  42. funds to keep POWER going but by being Shareware, providing you're all 
  43. honest, we get the funding but only if you feel that the issue is worth 
  44. registering (which I hope you will do!).  For more information on 
  45. registering POWER, read the appropriate article in this issue.

  47. When I started POWER I was only 13 years old.  However, at the point of 
  48. writing, I am 14 and by the time this is released, I will be a big 15 
  49. (yippeeeeee!).  As you probably well know, I'm James L. Mathews and am also 
  50. behind POWER P.D, POWER COMPACT DISKS, THE POWER APPROVED P.D.L. PROJECT 
  51. and am also a member of POWERFIST.  I have also done a lot of other stuff 
  52. for other licenceware companies and have numerous titles in the P.D. scene 
  53. too.  For more information on ANY of the above, please feel free to write

  56. I started POWER because I felt that I had something to offer.  I had a lot 
  57. of spare time on my hands which I seemed to be wasting, sitting infront of 
  58. the T.V. like most teenagers and I had been introduced into the P.D. scene 
  59. which I enjoyed so much that I wanted to become a part of it.  The result 
  60. was that I decided to start off a disk mag.  At first, it was dreadful but 
  61. it slowly got better, distributing P.D.L.'s increased, readership increased 
  62. and things got much better right up until now where POWER is the biggest 
  63. disk magazine of its kind.

  65. I aim to keep readers of POWER informed with as much information as 
  66. possible, I want to keep you all up-to-date and in touch with what's 
  67. happening in the ATARI scene and I want to share everything I know with you 
  68. and have informative, technical articles as well as articles which have 
  69. nothing to do with computers.  I aim to produce a disk magazine for release 
  70. on the first of every month which will have something in it for everyone.  
  71. We have jokes, humour, plays, competitions, puzzles, letters, general chat, 
  72. technical information, news, light hearted general articles and a hell of a 
  73. lot more.  I want a mag that everyone can pick up and enjoy whether they're 
  74. complete computer experts or if they don't know a single thing apart from 
  75. how to load a disk.

  77. Well, I think that just about tells you what POWER is all about, so now, a 
  78. brief description of the main columns that we have running at the moment...

  81. LETTERS COLUMN  - This is where I pick a small selection of the letters 
  82. received over the month and publish them for you to read.
  83.  
  84. TALKING POINT   - Each month, we have a different talking point which is 
  85. related to ATARI.  You, the reader can then write in with your views on the 
  86. talking point subject and a selection of them are then printed the 
  87. following month along with a new topic to be discussed.
  88.  
  89. NEWS            - This keeps you up-to-date with all the latest ATARI 
  90. related news.
  91.  
  92. THE EDITO PAGES - This is the POWER version of The Editorial.  It's like a 
  93. small introduction to what's happening in the issue and a way of saying 
  94. hello.

  96. THE PROGRAM 
  97. SUGGESTION 
  98. COLUMN          - This is a column in association with POWER P.D. where we 
  99. try to find a specific program that you are looking for or give you 
  100. suggestions of programs which might be of use to you for the required task 
  101. that you write into us about.
  102.  
  103. MESSAGES        - This is where you can send in a small little message 
  104. which will then be printed in this column free of charge.  It can be an 
  105. advert, a greeting to someone or anything!
  106.  
  107. CHIT CHAT       - This is a little column where you just write about 
  108. anything you want, general chit chat.  It is usually just me that does the 
  109. chatting and I get all the burble off of my chest so it doesn't appear in 
  110. too many other places elsewhere in the disk mag.  Everyone is welcome to 
  111. write their own chit chat for publication.

  113. THE TECHNICAL 
  114. HELP CORNER     - This is where if you have a computer related problem or 
  115. query, you write to us, and we'll answer your questions or solve your 
  116. problems.

  119. We have a lot of other regulars and columns so just look out for them.  I 
  120. hope that you enjoy POWER and if this is your first issue of POWER, I hope 
  121. that it isn't your last.
