PICTURE FORMATS by Colin of the Gosport Fun Factory ™
----=----=----=----=----=----=----=----=----=----=----
Since the time when the Atari was first conceived, there were very little
Art packages around that you could use. Many of them supported either the
good old Degas PI? or Neo...But as time progressed, more packages came onto
the market and the formats began to grow into somewhat confusing extensions.
How many times have you seen a good picture that you liked then looked at
the file format frantically searching for an Art disk to load it up only
to fail at your 10th attempt,so out comes either Gemview or Picswitch to
help you in your quest? Sometimes this will work and allow you to save it
in a readable extension or you will see the dreaded message saying "Not
recognised by this program". War is about to start as you finally lose your
patience. If you are lucky and have a picture ripper then all is not lost
as most can either grab the screen by pressing the Reset button or in the
use of pressing pre-programmed keys.
Some Programmers when they create their games, change the picture formats
like MYPIC.PC1 to MYPIC.DAT and once this has been changed you don't know
what format it was in the first place unless you look at the data, as some
contain not only the palette information but what type it is,so this could
give you some idea.
Since the Falcon came out there are more extensions than I care to remember
but as a guide I have put some of the main ones used for the ST.
