INTERVIEWED
BY JAMES L. MATHEWS
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO CALL YOUR P.D.L. AGPD?
I decided on this name because A & G are my initials, and AGPD is short and
catchy.
HOW LONG HAS AGPD BEEN RUNNING?
Behind the scenes, AGPD has been running for about 6 months.
DO YOU SEE A CLOSURE OF YOUR P.D.L. IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
As long as people are writing new software for the P.D. scene, I will
distribute it amoungst ST owners.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO GET YOUR P.D.L. ESTABLISHED?
It's taken quite a while, but I will be appearing in ST Format next month so
that should help.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE THAT YOU WANTED TO START OFF A P.D.L.?
I started it because I saw so many PDL charging about £2-£3 (which I think
is a rip off!). Also because a lot of PDL's distribute un-packed software,
incomplete disks, single sided disks and old software that is out of date
and of no use.
ARE YOU GLAD THAT YOU STARTED UP YOUR PUBLIC DOMAIN LIBRARY?
Yes I am. The main reason being that ST owners are friendly and polite people
to deal with.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE DISK IN YOUR COLLECTION?
It has to be G001 which is Tower Power - An excellent two player game which is
good enough to be a commercial title.
WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LIKE ABOUT THE P.D. SCENE?
The main thing I like is that PD programmers are improving - PD software is
getting better and better all the time!
IF ANYTHING, WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE ABOUT THE P.D. SCENE?
P.D.L.'s that are out only to make money.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MORE OF IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN? WHY?
More compiled disks (especially POV's) as they save an awful lot of disks and
they're presented with nice menus with interesting scrollers etc.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE LESS OF IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN? WHY?
Commercial rip-offs - Re-written versions with different names to the
commercial version of the same program. eg. The Blitz copier which is around -
Power Computing lose out on that, they're a great firm and I don't want to see
them leave the ST.
HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT CHUCKING IT ALL IN?
No.
WHAT MADE YOU BUY AN ST?
People who I know have them, I had a go on them and decided that I wanted one -
simple as that!
IF YOU HADN'T HAVE BOUGHT AN ST, WHAT COMPUTER DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD HAVE
BOUGHT INSTEAD?
Definately an Acorn Archimedes - A great machine!
WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LIKE ABOUT THE ST?
The reliability of it - I've had mine 4 years and I've had no problems with
it at all.
IF ANYTHING, WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE ABOUT THE ST?
The stupid place that the joystick ports are placed (I suppose everone says
that!)
HOW LONG DO YOU HONESTLY THINK THE ST HAS LEFT IN ITS LIFE?
It has many good years ahead of it, not with the support of Atari, but with
support of the owners, like me and you, James.
HOW DO YOU THINK THIS LIFE COULD BE LENGTHENED?
By spending money on your computer. Give it some more memory, splash out on
that Hard Drive you've always wanted, or anything else that will give
companies an incentive to carry on.
WHERE DO YOU THINK ATARI WENT WRONG WITH THE ST?
Definitely promotion, well, lack of it anyway. Another thing - Bad
packaging! Has the ST ever come with any decent software?!
DO YOU THINK ATARI GOT ANYTHING RIGHT WITH THE ST AND IF SO, WHAT?
They made it PC compatible - Smart move!
IF YOU WERE SAM TRAIMEL, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE WITH THE ST THAT ATARI
DIDN'T?
I would have promoted it further.
DO YOU THINK THE QUALITY OF P.D. IS GETTING BETTER OR WORSE?
Much better! P.D. programmers are making a great effort - keep it up!
WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS?
Because poor software isn't supported by its users.
DO YOU THINK SOME P.D.L.'S ARE JUST OUT FOR THE MONEY RATHER THAN TO OFFER A
GENUINE SERVICE?
Some are, but most PDL's are in to give a genuine service.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE GLOSSY ST MAGAZINES?
The three main ones are quite good. But at 3-4 quid they don't compete with
POWER!
IF THERE WAS ANYTHING YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT YOUR ST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
The Joystick ports!
WHAT DO YOU SEE IN THE FUTURE FOR YOUR P.D.L.?
A library with a wide selection of PD at a price that everyone can afford.
DO YOU HAVE ANY EXTRA PLANS OR PROJECTS FOR YOUR P.D.L. AND IF SO, WHAT?
I do have a few ideas, but I haven't had the time to put them into action yet.
WHAT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAPPEN WITH YOUR P.D.L.?
For it to get the good reputation that it deserves.
WHAT WOULD YOU LEAST LIKE TO HAPPEN WITH YOUR P.D.L.?
For it to have to quit due to lack of support.
DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE HONEST ENOUGH WITH SHAREWARE?
Not really, mind you, you can't expect everyone to register everything can
you?!
WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON THE ATARI FALCON? HAVE ATARI JUST MUCKED IT ALL UP?
Yes, they've done it again!
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE ATARI JAGUAR CONSOLE?
A great machine which has a thriving future if it gets the support from
Atari.
DO YOU THINK THAT IF THE JAGUAR DOES WELL FOR ATARI, THEY WILL LEAVE THE
COMPUTING SCENE AND MOVE OVER TO THE CONSOLE MARKET?
Yes, I think they will because the console market is extremely profitable,
and Atari need to start making some money!
WHO IN THE P.D. SCENE DO YOU RESPECT THE MOST AND WHY?
The programmers. They're the key to P.D.
WHAT DO YOU THINK US ST OWNERS HAVE THAT AMIGA OWNERS DON'T?
A hardware operating system!
WHAT DO YOU THINK AMIGA OWNERS THAT WE HAVEN'T GOT?
Support from software houses.
WHAT WOULD YOU ADVISE TO ANYONE ABOUT TO START WORK ON A NEW P.D. PRODUCT?
To make it good, different, or an improvement to something else that is
popular. Also, choose something that more people are likely to use. eg. More
people will use (+ maybe register) a copier than a Midi program).
FINALLY, TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT YOURSELF:
Me?! Well I'm into hardcore/house and dance music, I've got a 1 MEG STFM, a
second diskdrive, an Ultimate Ripper cartridge, a printer and loads of PD!
THANKS FOR THAT. NOW FEEL FREE TO ADVERTISE YOUR PUBLIC DOMAIN LIBRARY:
