*************************************
Stone Cold Sober is an absolutely brilliant new game from ORGANISED CHAOS
LICENCEWARE. A previous version of this game was once sold for a sum of £8
but now, this new, updated and improved version, hot from the disk drive of
the OCL Head Quaters is out on offer for just half the price. Can't be
bad!
So then, what's it all about? Well, to explain it all, here is a cutting
from Kev Davis' (head of OCL) own words...
Your day starts pleasantly enough, with you indulging in a few light ales
and a spot of darts with your drinking colleagues Tim and Mark in your
local, the Frying Fish. A bizarre and deeply improbable sequence of events
leads to a foul coven of Satanists seizing control of the ale supply to
the pub and polluting it with chicken blood. Together, you and Tim must
rid the fair borough of Brentford of these diabolic miscreants and bring
peace and serenity to the drinking houses of our land.
That's the main crust of it but for the full story, on the disk, there is a
very large novella for you to enjoy along with an excellent help program as
well.
The game itself takes the role of a mouse-driven graphical adventure, not
unlike Dungeon Master in style. The screen is split into a number of
sections. One section contains the excellently drawn graphics, another
section contains a list of objects, another section gives you a very large
list of commands and options and the final section is the place where all
the descriptions come up. There is also a little parser at the bottom of
the screen where you can interact with characters in the adventure and lots
more.
The game makes for essential playing. It really is superbly done and is
incredibly involving. It's very addictive with loads of options and a good
parser and deep gameplay yet it's not too hard to get to grips with and is
something that you can pretty much just pick up and enjoy.
The game is of quite a large nature. It features many locations with loads
to keep you occupied in the traditional Dungeon Master style or the style of
a good STAC text adventure.
The game doesn't ever get boring, simply because it is so involving and so
enjoyable. There's lots of good graphics and load of interaction along with
a nice touch of humour here and there with well written text too. It all
makes for a very professional looking game which probably could have made it
to budget-release at least.
A bit more sound would have been nice but it's not too bad. There's no
trouble with loading times or anything like that, you don't have to wait for
each location to load or anything and it's not for any particular
gamesplayer. Whether you're a hardened adventurer or completely new to the
scene, you will be able to sit down and enjoy this for a good few hours.
One thing that DOES restrict the game to certain audiences though is that
the game requires at least one megabyte of memory due to the sheer size of
the thing.
There is a good save\load game option which will allow you to save the point
at which you got too tired to keep your eyes open at due to hours on the
game and as I think I said earlier, there is a good help program too so you
don't get stuck forever on a certain part of the adventure. The help
program has been very well written. Click on the certain aspect of the game
that you're stuck on and you will be given a load more options in relation
to that main selection. For example, if you were stuck on a part of the
game such as not being able to get past a certain monster in the game, you
would click on "STUCK ON MONSTER". You would then be provided with a load
more related options such as "HOW TO KILL MONSTER", "HOW TO GET WHAT'S
NEEDED TO KILL MONSTER" and so on. The result is that if you get stuck, the
game isn't wasted.
It's an excellent game and well worth getting. It costs £4, requires one
megabyte of memory or more and can be obtained from POWER P.D. on disk PWR
464. The cost includes postage and packaging.
