Welcome to POWER #23, our second Christmas issue...And what an issue it is!
As you have probably already noticed, we've got a new shell and a new layout
and lots of changes but more about those a bit later on.
So then, it's Christmas! Wow! Christmas 1994 and the cold weather has set
in although unfortunately it is very unlikely that we will have a white
Christmas. I don't know what the odds are at the moment but when I last
looked, the bookies had a white Christmas going for 11000-1 or something
ludicrous. I would have thought its gone down slightly by now though, after
all, for putting in just one quid, I could come out with 11000 quid. I
suppose the same could be said about the lottery though. Ah, the lottery,
I've only bought one ticket so far and I got two numbers but that was it.
I'm just not lucky enough to win the lottery!
Well, as I mentioned a second ago, this is the NEW POWER disk magazine
although I must admit that it hasn't changed half as much as I would have
liked. The first thing you have probably noticed though is the new shell.
I know it looks very similar to the old shell but this is because you all
felt at home with the old shell so we didn't want to change the overall look
of the magazine too much. However, the shell is a complete revamp and has
been re-programmed from scratch. It's totally new code and was very kindly
done for us by Martin Cubitt. Amongst other improvements, the shell has the
following bonuses compared to the old shell:
- Reads packed files.
- Much faster loading routine.
- Much faster scrolling.
- Mono compatible shell.
- Scrolling by the mouse.
- Loads more functions.
Yes, the shell is now mono compatible so all you mono monitor owners out
there can now read the mag from within the shell instead of from the desktop
or with a text viewer. Also, we've got loads more functions in the shell
now. For full info just press the HELP key. There's functions such as the
normal requirements, e.g. line by line scrolling, page scrolling, a search
facility and all the rest but we've also got an option to hide the document
or even use a screen saver to prevent damage to your T.V.\monitor.
Scrolling can now also be done via the mouse rather than the cursor keys if
you prefer.
There's also a lot of bonuses in the shell for ME which you (the readers)
will never be able to fully appreciate. For example, I can now use just
about any type of music file I want instead of just Mad Max or Megatizer,
it's easier to compile the magazine and loads more.
Well, it's sure lucky that we can now pack files because I have roughly 700k
of unpacked text for you to read and if I couldn't have packed that then I
don't know what I would have done as it wouldn't have all fitted on the disk
what with the shell and everything else taking up valuable disk space.
That's a lot of reading material though, especially for a monthly disk
magazine!
I was hoping to have really changed POWER for this issue and have a totally
new look but as I was producing the magazine looking for things to change
and so on I just didn't know what I could do. You see, this new POWER has
been based around the replies from the POWER POLLS and your OPINION forms
but generally you all seemed very happy with what we already had. I've made
some changes but they're all rather slight. I hope that you can enjoy this
new POWER though and obviously any opinions, suggestions or comments would
be greatly appreciated. The same goes for the shell. We would like to have
the shell updated every now and then so if you have any suggestions for new
functions or ideas for improvements or any bug reports then please write and
tell me about them and we'll see what we can do for you.
So I've told you that we've got roughly 700k of unpacked text, but just what
is all that text made up of? Well, we've got the results to the POWER POLLS
after two months of voting from you. We've got THE ULTIMATE DISK MAGAZINE
ROUNDUP, the long awaited article on the ATARI 8-bit scene, more TREK TALK,
more from SKYNET TIMES, a few new sections, reviews, interviews with quite a
few people including the famous ST musician, Swizzle, an interview with
Vogue of SKYNET and an interview with the editor of ST CONTACT disk
magazine. We've also got loads of jokes and humour, ASCII art, adventure
solutions, help advice, letters, chat and looooooads more. It really is a
big issue so enjoy it! This is our Christmas present to you!
Okay, well a big MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all! Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Chris
Sharp who was 19 on the 1st of this month. I hope to see you all at our
Birthday issue next month in issue 24.
