AUDIO SCULPTURE - SYNCHRON ASSEMBLY - £4.99 - DIRECT SOFTWARE
There are numerous soundtracker programs around, especially in the
Public Domain such as Noisetracker, esion soundtracker etc.., So why
should anyone want to fork out extra cash on a commercial program?
Well, you are about to find out. Read on...
The layout of Audio Sculpture is quite similar to most other trackers,
with four seperate channels for your notes, and mouse controlled icons
that control volume, track position and velocity etc..
As with other tracker programs, your notes are entered as hexidecimal
numbers with up to 64 in each pattern.
What is different is that you can edit your notes on a musical stave
too just like in Quartet! This is handy if you are musically trained,
but not for amateurs like me!
You can create or load in normal Amiga modules that are in the public
domain with no problems atall, but if you have an STE you're in for a
real treat. There are many different sound output options available
including normal soundchip, mastersound cartridge, ST replay, STE DMA
chip and a 50khz hi-fi output mode!
The latter one is unbelievably clear giving really impressive results.
You can also alter the Bass and treble and adjust the volume of the
left and right speakers, as well as the main volume too. Even modules
created with trackers such as noisetracker, sound clearer in the Hi-fi
mode. 50khz is better than CD quality!
Another impressive feature is the voice synthesisor. It is very easy
to master. Click on the sampling icon, click on BUF and copy icons,
then type in what you want your Atari to say. Hey presto! you can now
save your voice sample and use it in your songs.
A sampler is also included within the program. You can sample from a
Mastersound 2 or replay cartridge but can only sample up to 24khz. The
basic editing functions are here too saving the hasslement of leaving
the program to obtain your samples and then having to reload again to
find your samples aren't quite what you expected them to be.
You may find it better though to do your sampling in another program
if you want better quality than 24khz. Mastersound achieves 30khz for
example.
One unique and powerful feature is the vector synthesis synthesisor.
This allows you to create your own sounds without any sampling
cartridges. I found this rather difficult to get the hang of though,
but I'm sure that with a little time and effort it can be mastered.
There are many other features too and many commands can be edited into
your notes to give them professional sounds. For instance you can
change the Vibrato, Portamento, Volume, and tremolo frequencies of the
samples from within the note editor. If you have two of the same
samples on two seperate tracks then you can add a phaser effect to one
of them which generates stunning results by adding a very slight phase
delay between the two samples. You end up with a groovy flanger type
effect!
There is a fine tune feature too which allows you to adjust the
frequecy and tempo of the whole module. This is very useful for
getting those drum loop samples to play in time with the rest of the
song. Full midi support is here too with controls for midi in and out.
There are an impressive range of features within Audio Sculpture
making it a program well worth £4.99 if you have an STE. The only
quibble I have to make is about the lousy manual. It is rather too
technical to understand at times. Apart from this, Audio Sculpture is
an essential piece of music software.
The powerful graphic interface, Vocal synthesisor, Full Midi support
and full compatibility with other tracker modules make it a cut above
the rest!
