  16. The host of Channel 4's Gamesmaster programme,  Dominik  Diamond
  17. always  seems  to  have one thing on his mind  -  and  it's  not
  18. computer games.  You'll see what I mean when I give you a couple
  19. of  his  recent quotes.  "Gamesmaster is  responsible  for  more
  20. sprained wrists than Julia Roberts", a reference I think, to the
  21. shows'   participants   waggling  their   joysticks.   And   one
  22. participant,  who  after  walking off with the top  prize  of  a
  23. golden joystick, was followed by "and there goes Stuart with his
  24. large  possession".  And they put  this programme out at 6.30pm!

  27.  EMULATORS ACCUMULATE
  28. ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

  30. What  is  the matter with ST programmers?  No sooner  have  they 
  31. dumped their 8 bits and spent £300+ on an ST,  then they go  and 
  32. write ZX81,  Spectrum and C64 emulators!  And ST owners (most of 
  33. which  have also upgraded from 8 bits) go and buy them in  their 
  34. droves!

  36. But I must confess to being an emulator user.  For some  reason, 
  37. it is more fun playing emulated spectrum games on an ST than  on 
  38. the  real thing.  But why does this particular emulator  run  so 
  39. much slower? The Spectrum can't be the most complex of micros to 
  40. emulate.  It  doesn't  matter that much,  it's  the  'nostalgia' 
  41. factor that matters - and there's plenty of that.

  44.  A SERIOUS (BACK) ISSUE

  47. ST Format must have an awful lot of back issues to shift.  For a 
  48. while now they have been littering their pages with adverts  for 
  49. their back issue/subscription service. They'll mention something 
  50. like a review or simply a news item that they have published  in 
  51. the past,  and then  immediately follow  it with something  like
  52. "(If you missed it,turn to our back issue service on page 114 to 
  53. order that issue) ".

  55. They do this so many times in the latest issue it makes you want
  56. to order their  entire stock  of back  issues  just to keep them
  57. quiet. Nobody else  does this, not even ST User. (By the way, If
  58. you missed my review of the new-look  ST User in Sten 7, contact
  59. the editor for a back issue).

  65. The number of ST paint packages continues to rise but they offer 
  66. nothing new.  They all seem to stick to the same  old Degas-type 
  67. features  and even menu layouts.  All very well in 1986 but  not 
  68. now.  We need to have more complex functions like better  object 
  69. manipulation (wrap bitmap onto circle etc) and more colours  and 
  70. colour control.  Deluxe Paint has blend and smooth functions but 
  71. with  only  16 colours they aren't as useful as they  could  be. 
  72. Neochrome  master  came close,  but this was  banned  by  Atari! 
  73. Interestingly,  the Amiga with it's 'better' graphic capability, 
  74. only  has a handful of paint programs,  and only 1 in the PD  at 
  75. the last count!
