* TIMEWORKS PUBLISHER 2 *
* *
* by G|S|T *
*************************
If you were asked to name a DTP program, a fair bet would be that four
out of five would probably answer "Timeworks", such is the reputation
of this program which has been around on the ST and PC for some years
now. A reputation is not always a good thing and with the speed of
developments on all computer related products, programs that were once
good quickly acquire a dated, primitive or even an unfashionable feel,
such was the case with Timeworks.
In a bid to remedy the old image, G|S|T have released version 2 of the
old master with a host of new features to put Timeworks back in the
popularity ratings while retaining the simple approach to D.T.P. which
after all is probably the biggest overall advantage this program has
over it's now many rivals. A quick look at what is new reveals 4
extra fonts (GDOS), a wider range of word processors acceptable to
Timeworks, a much greater variety of Picture imports including TIFF,
PCX & IFF, automatic backup, more text styles and text that will
runaround irregular illustrations. Add to these features the flexibil-
ity to use Timeworks 2 files developed on a PC (or vice versa), you
have an impressive list for what is one of the cheaper packages on the
market.
System requirements are simple, any ST, Monitor, Memory, Drive
configuration although with only a 520 you will have to manage with a
reduced font set (point sizes rather than losing styles) and the
patience of Job, however I'll come back to that later, and a single
floppy will involve a lot of disk swapping. Configuration is extremely
simple, my setup is a 4 Meg STe, Protar Hard Drive, twin floppies and
High Resolution Monitor so to start I opted for the default configura-
tion, saving to drive "G" (Hard Disk Partition). Timeworks will 'read'
your setup but will let you have the final say. Installation was
completed in 10 minutes with no GDOS hiccoughs so I then decided to
switch off the Hard Drive and install on twin floppies. The second
installation took the best part of ½hour, but again without problems.
Is Fleet Street Ready ?
The moment of truth has arrived, double clicking onto PUBLISH.APP sets
the drive whirring and after a few seconds Timeworks is waiting with a
simple, understandable screen. Load a file - several examples are
provided and installed for you but why does it take longer to load a
single file than the whole of the Timeworks program ? for some reason
the program seems to take a coffee break while reading the disk
directory. Once loaded I am indeed impressed, the text flows onto the
page leaving an irregular shaped space in the centre on the page,
strange, but then the space fills with a picture of a sailing dingy,
decidedly clever for such an easy program. Messing with the examples
highlights the simplicity of the program and this coupled with a
comprehensive 284 page manual really should be an undemanding program
to master.
Timeworks will achieve most of what the home user will want for
producing newsletters, posters etc. but Timeworks is not as comprehen-
sive as Calamus, you will not get an instant Mackintosh when you load
up the program, however you still have both arms & legs attached.
All Timeworks operations are based on the 'box' principle, if you want
to import a picture onto the page, you must have a box for it to
reside in, the fact that you can change the shape of that box to
approximately that of the picture means that your text can be made to
follow the contours of the image. Text Style and Point size can be
changed easily and style sheets can be saved to give your fanzine a
degree of continuity. The Text itself may be imported from a large
range of Word processors for both the ST and PC as well as standard
ASCII format files although of course these do not retain the
attributes given by the word processor.
Timeworks supports most 9 and 24 pin Dot Matrix Printers as well as
Laser and Postscript Printers and four printers can be installed
simultaneously. If your document holds pictures you may choose whether
or not to print the graphics (reprise for your ribbon if yours is dot
matrix) which is useful for layout assessment before final print.
Patience of Job.
Using Timeworks from Hard Drive is smooth and effortless with the one
exception of loading files, however the manual describes Timeworks as
having it's own virtual memory system utilising what memory is
available and fonts and documents that wont fit are accessed from disk
as required, in other words the more memory, the fewer disk accesses.
My setup has 4 Megs and the installation onto twin floppies was tried
with the result that with regularity I was waiting for something or
other to load which at times was most frustrating - this will
undoubtedly be worse with a basic 520 machine and my advise would be
more memory and if possible use a ram disk although just how feasible
this would be I'm not quite sure. Printing like everything else is a
simple procedure, click on the print option, highlight what you
require if it was not already set up and away you, or should I say
your printer, go.
I must confess, I did enjoy reviewing Timeworks, the program has a
nice friendly feel about it, the improvements have helped to bring
Timeworks into the nineties though I can't honestly believe they are
at the forefront of ST computer technology. I doubt the professional
will find much of interest but for the hobbyist, the club secretary,
the small business wanting to produce more than a typewritten output
and the many Timeworks 1 users, Timeworks Publisher 2 is an economical
upgrade or first time purchase.
Prices are listed at £129.25 or upgrade from v1 £44.57, however if you
scan the magazines you will find discounted prices, I saw one price of
£74.95 which has to make Timeworks very good value.
