NEW STENS FROM OLD
One of my main concerns when adding new features to the STEN shell was to
ensure that it was always backwards compatible with older issues. This
basically meant that if you took the latest version of the shell and
copied it to an early disc it would be possible to use it to read the
text files.
This does not mean that all of the latest features will be included with
the upgraded disc. For example, the menu feature will almost certainly
not be available on older discs as this needs a special file to tell the
program what articles are on the disc. Also the screen picture will
probably not load, again early versions used the uncompressed Degas
format whereas later versions used the compressed format.
All is not lost however, as this article is about upgrading old versions
of STEN to use the latest shell. I've even included copies of the missing
menu files so that all you need to do is convert the old .PIn pictures
to .PCn versions using PICSW7 or similar.
1 - Format a disc to at least 800k. This is double sided, 80 tracks and
10 sectors per track.
2 - Copy the AUTO folder from this disc to the new disc.
3 - Copy the following programs from the ROOT directory on this disc to
the new disc.
DESKTOP.INF
STARTGEM.INF (only if your TOS version < 1.4)
STARTGEM.PRG (only if your TOS version < 1.4)
STE_FIX.PRG (only if your TOS version > 1.4)
STEN.PRG
STEN.RSC
Everything from now on will be carried out using the issue that is being
upgraded and the new version.
4 - Convert the initial screen picture, either SCREEN.PI1 (or .PI3) to
SCREEN.PC1 (or .PC3) and copy to the new disc.
5 - Copy the relevant MENU.INF to the new disc. Old MENU.INFs have been
provided in the MENU folder (for #1 and #2), these are named
MENU_1.INF & MENU_2.INF, and will need renamed to MENU.INF.
6 - Copy the NEWS.TXT folder to the new disc.
7 - Create a PROGRAMS folder on the new disc and copy as many programs
as you need from the old version. Remember that the size of the
shell has been increasing and there may not be enough room on the
new disc for everything.
You now have a copy of STEN that uses the latest version of the shell. If
you have left anything out please *DO NOT* pass your customised copy to
others as their computer and preferences will almost certainly be differ-
ent from yours. Instead, give them your old copy and allow them to custo-
mise STEN to their own needs.
