Welcome to VanTerm 3.8! In this ARC you'll find the following files:
VANTERM(tm).CFG - This is a sample configuration file. You edit, load, and
save .CFG files from within VanTerm. It contains various settings that
you select within VanTerm, and also contains your dial directory and
function key strings. You may have as many .CFG files as you like, as
long as each one has a different name. VanTerm will look for .CFG files
in the same directory from which VanTerm was executed, and will load
VANTERM(tm).CFG by default, if it exists. You can also invoke VanTerm as an
"installed" application by clicking ONCE on VANTERM(tm).PRG and using "Install
Application" from the GEM desktop and installing it as GEM with .CFG as the
file type. Please read your Atari ST owner's manual for more info on
"Install Application". Once done and saved with your DESKTOP.INF file, you
can execute VanTerm by double clicking on the desired .CFG file, allowing
you to have seperate .CFG files for things like work, BBS, PC-Pursuit, etc.
Of course, you can select and load any .CFG file at any time from within
VanTerm once it is running.
Note: .CFG files are 'pure ASCII', that is, you can edit them with any
text editor if you wish, but BE CAREFUL! The exact format, commas, etc.
are important!
VANTERM(tm).PRG - The actual program. The "tm" symbol IS a GEM character,
but not understood by TOS. Therefore, ARC and a few other programs, and
most shell programs wil display a question mark (?) instead and may not
extract the files properly from an archive. If this has happenned, use
DCOPYxxx.PRG to re-extract and it will be fine. Or you can use the
RENAME function of VanTerm to create the character and rename the file(s).
Once you select a file to RENAME within VanTerm, you'll see a nice help
screen that tells you how to create the "tm" and almost any other
character that GEM can handle!
WXYTR.TTP - Required by VanTerm if you plan to do any X/YModem up or down
loading! You may still use any executable or desk accessory transfer
program, like Sealink, WXYMODEM or any other you may have. WXYTR.TTP may
exist on any drive or folder as long as you inform VanTerm where it is
through the "Default Paths" option.
Now, if you have Shadow (the background file transfer program by Paul Lee
and sold through Antic and most ST dealers, an excellent program!), and if
it is installed, VanTerm will see it and permit you to use it directly! If
enabled, VanTerm will use Shadow instead of WXYTR.TTP. You have a choice!
TRANSFER.* - Read HISTORY.DOC for info. A desk accessory version and
alternative to WXYTR if you're short on disk space.
DCOPYxxx.PRG (current version of DCOPY) - I've removed all ARC functions
in favor of a (finally!) properly working version of DCOPY! DCOPY is
faster than ARC, compresses more than ARC, has all the ARC functions of
ARCSHL, plus it formats diskettes, prints file, reformats files of many
types, and more! Do NOT use any version of DCOPY other than the one
I supply in VANTERM.ARC! You could be asking for trouble! There were
MANY versions of DCOPY pass around, some with the version number changed
(but nothing else!), some with severe bugs, and some I suspect may have
a virus! This one is clean and works great!
VANTERM(tm).HLP - This file must be in the same directory from which VanTerm
was executed, otherwise, the Help function will be disabled!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, these little docs are short, but that's because (if you haven't tried
it yet) VanTerm has a nice built in help function! Just select help from
the menu bar, then click on any menu item for which you desire more
information. Pressing the HELP key while at the menu screen will
accomplish the same thing. Pressing the HELP key while in the online
screen will tell you about the various key commands available while online.
Pressing UNDO while on the menu or online screen will prompt you to quit
VanTerm, as does "Quit" on the FUNCTIONS menu.
Final Tip: Some functions can be called from the online mode by pressing
and holding the ALTERNATE key, then pressing a single key, and releasing
both keys. These commands are marked in the GEM menus with a small box with
an X in it followed by a letter. For example, you can call the Baud Rate
routine by pressing Alternate-B.
=============================================================================
This program is Shareware, and donations will help keep it alive and
growing! A few have purchased source, a few have made donations, but I
know for a fact that there are hundreds, and perhaps thousands who use it
every day and haven't sent a penny... This program represents hundreds of
hours of programming and frustration! Please help. Some people say
"I've spent $100 on telephone calls to download the latest version(s) of
VanTerm, so haven't I spent enough?" WRONG!!! The telephone companies
don't send me a PENNY of your phone bill, so if you expect to continue
getting improved, faster versions of VanTerm, then please send something!
I think you'll agree it's worth at LEAST 10 to 20 dollars, no? I'm
getting to the point where I'll just stop improving it, sell my ST,
and get a Macintosh... At least Mac users know what the word Shareware
means! If means, if you like it and use it, send something, otherwise
delete it and buy something! When someone makes a suggestion for an
improvement to VanTerm, or complains of a bug, the first thing I do is
check my list of Shareware contributors... if the person's name isn't
on the list... TOUGH COOKIES! If their name IS on the list, I make
every effort to add a worthwhile improvement or fix the bug.
If you do send something, please make it payable to: Wm. A. Van Nest, Sr.
and I thank you very much! If you don't send something, then don't
expect anything.
The usual disclaimer would go here, something about this program not
being guaranteed for any particular purpose, I claim no responsibility
for damage to your computer, diskettes, dog, whatever. I DO, however,
guarantee that if you download VanTerm from MY BBS, you will get a
virus-free version that works on my 1mb 520st. I can't guarantee it
will work with every model of ST or version of TOS, but it should since
there are no 'tricks' or illegal programming steps involved... none that
*I* know of anyway... Paul Lee may have done a couple sneaky things to
get the status line protected, but I believe it will be fine. If you
DO have trouble, first check what ELSE is running on your ST. SOmething
else may interfere. Second, check your hardware.. loose chips do lots
of strange things. Third, USE THE HELP KEY AND READ ALL ON-SCREEN
INSTRUCTIONS. I can no longer count the telephone calls I've received
(from people who haven't paid either!!) that ended with "oh yeah, I didn't
read what it's telling me to do.. now it works fine! Thanks!". Sigh.
Special note for 3.8: Read and re-Save ALL configuration (*.CFG) files.
There was a bug in 3.71 that would cause it to mess
up the color settings if you switched to monochrome
and re-saved one. Also, this version will load
configuration files for versions only as old as
3.6 (I believe...) - I took out ALL the old code
to allow for various version of .CFG files, and
thereby speeded up the configuration load routine!
If your version is older and fails to load, you'll
need to re-create it within VanTerm, or if you're
good with an editor and don't drop commas, you could
create a dummy configuration and use it as a guide
to edit your old one to make it similiar. Good luck!
