**************************
Thank you for using this copy of Write ON from the ST Format cover
disk. Write ON has taken many years of development and we hope you
enjoy using it and make it your standard word processor. Please
remember that this is your copy and whilst you may make back up
copies for your own security please do not give copies to other ST
owners. Software piracy is illegal and also hurts you too. We can
only earn money in order to develop Write ON and offer a Helpline
service if users use a legitimate copy of our products.
Write ON is not copy protected. If you treat this fact with
respect then we will never have to consider copy protection for
future versions.
Some common error messages
Screen too narrow?
You have a TV or Colour monitor and need to switch to medium
resolution using the Set Preferences command from the Options
menu of your ST's desktop.
Unable to find STANDARD.KEY
Trash the wile WRITE_ON.INF and try again.
xxx Missing corrupted or too large
Means what it says! (Too large means will not fit into memory.)
Try removing some fonts. May also be caused by faulty
installation. Single disk drive users should also read the note
in this file.
Out of memory/almost out of memory
Try deleting some fonts or splitting a long document into
chapters. Else you need to upgrade your memory.
After a memory error you are returned to Write ON in order to
save your current document. You will have to exit Write ON and
load it again to get your memory back.
Problems with printing
If you experience problems printing typically when the printer
prints but the printout is corrupt this may be caused by either:-
A Clock program that displays the time on screen - if so
disable it before running Write ON
You have Turbo ST installed. (If this is the case then
run Turbo ST as a desk accessory and disable it at print
time
With some dot matrix printers, printing text in a printer font
when text is justified may take a long time. The print head
appears to print one word at a time. This is due to limitations in
the printer which make micro-spacing difficult. To speed the
process up either change fonts to a graphic font such as Helbo or
set the paragraph justification to left aligned. (The most common
occurrence is with some Star printers - Nx series and LC10).
Write ON on a 520 ST.
Running Write ON on a 520 ST is a squeeze which is why we
recommend
at least 1 Meg of memory. To load Write ON in a half Meg machine
disable all desktop accessories. (To do this rename all the *.ACC
files on your Write ON work disk to *.ACX using the Show Info
command.) Then reset your ST so that no accessories are loaded
before running Write ON.
Note that by the time you have loaded Write ON you have little
more than 100k of free memory. If you decide to upgrade your ST to
1 Meg not only will Write ON have nearly five times more free
memory to run in (yes 5 times!) you will also be able to run many
other programs that will only run in machines with a minimum of 1
Meg.
The AUTO folder
In the Auto folder are two patch programs which fix bugs in TOS.
LA.PRG is only needed with early versions of TOS and POOLFIX4 only
with TOS 1.4. These never occur on ST(E)'s which are always TOS
1.6 or higher and hence no patch is required. To test if you need
either patch click on About under the Atari Icon on your ST's
desktop. If the only copyright date is 1985 then you need LA.PRG,
if the copyright date is 1985,86,87,88,89 then you will need
POOLFIX4.PRG else you should not have need for either patch and
can delete the AUTO folder from your Work Disk.
Remember that for the patch to install your work disk must be in
drive A when you start your ST.
Single disk drive systems
If you only have one floppy drive then you should always save your
data files to logical drive B. To do this whenever you first save
a document select drive B from the file selector. When prompted by
Write ON change disks and insert your data disk. Only change disks
when prompted to do so by Write ON - otherwise data can become
corrupted. Let's repeat that one more time... ONLY CHANGE DISKS
WHEN PROMPTED TO DO SO BY THE PROGRAM.
Problems centring text?
Users new to the concept of paragraph style based word processing
often have trouble understanding how to centre text in Write ON.
All justification is handled by paragraph styles - to centre all
the text for a particular paragraph style change the paragraph
style in the Layout menu to be centred. If you want to centre a
particular line then change its paragraph style to one that is
centred - on the release disks the default layout has the style Ac
which will centre your text.
If you change the settings of the default style A1 to centred
then, obviously, all the paragraphs in your document will be
centred.
Take some time to look at how paragraph styles work in styling the
demo documents... this should help you understand the concept.
Still confused? Don't worry call the Helpline and we will talk you
through it.
