{As I miss the excellent music column that use to be in the old Stellar

Album review
Robert Miles
Dreamland
Published by BMG
Reviewed by John Hayward
Unless you have live in a cave, you have probably heard the successful
'Children' single by Robert Miles around last year. More or less unknown
before then, Miles (who is Italian and his real name is Roberto Concina)
has created a unique style with a simple mixture of dance type synth and
piano. A lot of tracks are not dissimilar to the works of Jean Michel
Jarre or Mike Oldfield in the way they are timeless and appeal to a wide
audience. I first listened to bits of this album in a mate's car at full
volume which was rather good. I paid about £12 for this CD from HMV's new
mail order service.
Miles describes his music in his album as 'recognising no limits and no
confines... uniting black and white, young and old and the gold with the
band. Jean Michel Jarre also seems to target his material at bringing
peace with people of all races and religions together in harmony.
The tracks:
1. CHILDREN (DREAM VERSION) The famous track which was Miles's first hit
which got to number 1.
2. FABLE. (MESSAGE VERSION) Another successful hit in the charts
directly after Children, similar style with piano plus heavy dance style
beat.
3. FANTASYA. More or less pure dance with some vocals in the backround.
4. LANDSCAPE. Weird sort of psychadelic synth with some backround effects
from a sea crashing against a shore. Inspired by Jean-Michel Jarre,
prehaps?
5. IN YOUR DREAMS. A deep atmospheric bassy sort of affair, fairly
repetitve but excellent dancey sort of track with gradually building
effects, that leads up nicely to One on One.
6. ONE ON ONE. The best track with the vocals done by Maria Naylor. Was
a number 1 just before last Christmas.
7. PRINCESS OF LIGHT. Has some more trippy synthy effects and main piano
bits like Fable.
8. FABLE (DREAM VERSION) As with the other track but without the vocals
but with more emphasis on the guitar backing.
9. IN THE DAWN. Didn't like this one much, sounds like a bit like
Fantasya but its a bit of a mess.
10. CHILDREN (ORIGINAL VERSION) I could not see any difference between
this one and the other version myself, apart from less bass and some
extra synth at the beginning.
11. RED ZONE. Lots of weird synth, very Jarre-esque. Small amount of
solo drum as well.
Overall.
I consider most dance music to be complete load of pants along with garage
and house to be socks and vests as well, but Robert Miles has produced an
excellent album with all the tracks mixed really well, and it is hard not
to like it. All the tracks are written himself apart from One on One
which is written by B.Steinberg, with the vocals by Maria Naylor.
All the tracks seem to be recorded in just the right order and
blend seemlessley really well. Oh yeah, and if you watched Top of the Pops
late last year with the live version of 'One on One' you would have seen
an ST in the backround.
Get this, it's a must.
