HOO-R-YOO
*********
Another issue, and yet more Hoo-r-yoo's, without doubt this is the most
popular section we've ever had in STOSSER. Loads of you sent in your
entries, so many in fact, that i've lost count, and i've probably
missed a few of you out. Although i can assure you that everyone was
entered for the competition. Anyway, all the entries are in now, and
the final draw has been made. Hopefully, the winners should already
have their prizes. To those lucky three, we hope you enjoy them.
THE WINNERS ARE:
1st prize: Peter Kerr of Johnstone, Strathclyde.
2nd prize: Robin Ball of Devizes, Wiltshire.
3rd prize: Richard Karsmakers of Utrecht, Netherlands.
Enjoy!.
Anyway, here are the final HOO-R-YOO's that will be used in STOSSER,
there are quite a few of them this time round, so i hope you all enjoy
reading them. If you sent one in, but it hasn't been used, i
apologise.
The first HOO-R-YOO for this issue is from Richard Karsmakers, in his
HOO-R-YOO he mentioned that he was not particularly interested in
winning the 3rd prize of stos source. Each to their own i suppose, but
funnily enough that is exactly which one he won. So i'll be writing to
him suggesting an alternative of five disks of p.d. from my collection.
Anyway, off you go Richard.....
1.NAME:
Richard Karsmakers.
2.ALIASES:
Cronos of the Quatermass Experiment (QX), formerly of the Amazing
Cracking Conspiracy (ACC).
3.AGE:
27
4.HOME:
Utrecht, the Netherlands, a flat 4 high.
5.OCCUPATION:
Student of English at Utrecht University.
6.PREVIOUS COMPUTERS:
Commodore 64 and 520 ST. I had a Sinclair QL for about a month and a
CBM VIC 20 for about 3 hours.
7.PRESENT COMPUTER:
Falcon 030 with 340Mb IDE 2.5" HD. I also have a Cambridge computer
Z88, my old MEGA ST 2 (upgraded 2 4Mb with AT speed, internal 44Mb TT
HD and external MEGAFILE 30 HD) and a Commodore 128 D.
8.OTHER HARDWARE:
A printer (Citizen Swift 9), SVGA monitor and two of the best joysticks
in the world 'The arcade' by Suzo.
9.ST USED FOR:
Word processing (ST NEWS and TWILIGHT WORLD) and programming (ST NEWS,
THE ULTIMATE VIRUS KILLER, and of course various small PD and shareware
utilities). I also play games.
10.BEST APPLICATIONS SOFTWARE:
Not 'BEST' but 'MOST USED': 1st Word Plus, Protext seems the best but i
never use it. Gfa Basic isn't the best either, but it does nicely for
what i want to do.
11.BEST GAMES:
All Bitmap stuff, all Llamasoft stuff, Bubble Bobble, Super Sprint,
Blood Money (can't get it to run on my Falcon unfortunately) and Lode
runner (C-64).
12.MOST USELESS HARDWARE:
Well, i wouldn't know anything, but of the stuff i have myself: The
ultimate ripper cartridge is pretty useless.
13.MOST USELESS SOFTWARE:
I can't think of anything, but there's been rather a lot. Most virus
killers on the market are pretty useless. Exceptions are: Antidote,
Virendetektor and the forthcoming PVK 3, and probably one or two i
forgot.
14.MOST DESIRED HARDWARE:
The Falcon 'Blow up' hardware to increase screen resolution and hertz
frequency. Also an active small speaker system.
15.LIKES:
Food, sleep, drink.
16.DISLIKES:
People who slag off either ST NEWS or The Ultimate Virus Killer (or
both !!). I also have no reason to like religious fanatics, TV
commercials and people wearing flourescent nylon jogging suits.
17.FAVOURITE MUSIC:
Hard Rock (Deep Purple/Rush), doom, death, thrash metal (a lot), rock
guitar music, synthesizer stuff (Vangelis, Jarre).
18.FAVOURITE RECORD:
At the moment Yngwie Malmsteens ' The Seventh Sign ', though there's
bound to be a new favourite soon.
19.DISLIKED MUSIC:
House, Rap, that kind of thing.
20.MOST HATED SONG:
Anything by 2 Unlimited (makes me ashamed to be Dutch) and Doop i
guess.
21.FAVOURITE TV:
Married with Children, Family dog, Red Dwarf, Police Squad, Birds of a
Feather, Star Trek TNG (Keefy.. WAHEY!).
22. WORST TV:
A Dutch soap called Good Times Bad Times, I watch it almost every day
though. The house of Elliot was pretty puke provoking, not my cup of
tea at all.
23. BEST FILMS:
Total Recall, Jurassic Park, Abyss, Schindlers List, Terminator 2, and
probably anything by James Cameron or Steven Spielberg or starring
Steve Martin, Harrison Ford and or Murray.
24. WORST FILMS:
The Attack of the killer Tomatoes springs to mind. It was hilariously
funny in a wierd way though.
25. BEST GRUB:
Anything Italian, Chinese with meat, and McDonald stuff. I also like
Egyptian/Indian hot stuff (though not anything ending with Vindaloo,
which i tried once when i had burst lips.
26. WORST GRUB:
Radishes, Ginger root, olives.
27. BEST DRINKS:
Soft drink Cola (anything really - coke, coke light, Pepsi, pepsi max,
though not Pepsi light), beer Guinness (though preferably not from a
can and well chilled) or bitter (well chilled too!), more serious
alchoholic beverage Plantiac (thats Dutch brandy).
28. WORST DRINKS:
Buckler (a now no longer available Dutch no-alchohol beer). Jeez that
was disgusting.
29. MOST ADMIRED PERSONS:
Jeff Minter, Nic of TCB, Rob Hubbard (music programmer), Yngwie
Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Shiraz Shivji (designed C-64 and
ST).
30. MOST DISLIKED PERSONS:
Politicians, any ex-Yugoslav who dosen't want to stop fighting, people
who hunt whales, and people who club seals to death.
31.AMBITION IN LIFE:
Become a bestseller writer.
32.HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN USING STOS?;
Er....I never did actually. I just got your magazine sent and I
skipped the STOS related articles. I probably won't ever use it
because it would have to work on the Falcon first.
33.ON A SCALE OF 1 to 10 HOW GOOD AT PROGRAMMING WOULD YOU SAY YOU WERE?:
68000 assembler:2 6502 assembler:4 Gfa Basic: 7 Stos :1
34.CAN YOU LIST ANY P.D. ETC PROGRAMS YOU HAVE RELEASED?:
There's ST News disk magazine of course, and a few shareware utilities
called Hiscore Terminal Utility and Backup Destruction Utility. I am
currently working on brain replacement utility which will be an
extensive diary/calendar/appointment accessory. And of course there's
the commercial (12.99) Ultimate Virus Killer.
35.WHERE DO YOU NORMALLY GET YOUR ISSUE OF STOSSER FROM?:
I don't normally get it, but i got ish 14 through Keefy (cheers pal!).
NOW TELL US A FEW BREIF BITS AND BOBS ABOUT YOURSELF:
I am not at all interesting, but i like filling in questionaires like
this one.

28

I was born in Ravensburg,a beautiful & historic town in South Germany,

5.OCCUPATION:
Since leaving the West German Airforce, I have found work for a
British company in research & developement.
6.PREVIOUS COMPUTERS:My father owned a PC for a while so I had access
to that, but I did not enjoy using it - such an unfriendly machine!
7.PRESENT COMPUTER:
Atari STFM 520 (2.5 megabytes of ram).
8.OTHER HARDWARE:
Colour monitor, mono monitor, hand scanner, external drive, printer.
(Try lugging that lot around from posting to posting - it is not only
Francois Lionet who did military service with an ST!)
9.ST USED FOR:
Personal correspondance, programming, the odd game, genealogy, some
DTP.
At my place of work, I have to use PC's, Mac's and a mainframe.
10.BEST APPLICATIONS SOFTWARE:
The best software is the program which performs as you want it to.
Calamus, Protext, Data Manager all fit my requirements.
11.BEST GAMES:
I find puzzle games the most stimulating, and I waste time with flight
simulations, but they are nowhere near as good as the real thing.
12.MOST USELESS HARDWARE:
Atari Mouse - what a dreadful device.
The St sound(?) chip.
13.MOST USELESS SOFTWARE:
Soccer games!
Atari ST Basic.
14.MOST DESIRED HARDWARE:
The new Medusa looks very nice...
A hard drive would be most useful as I am tired of changing floppies
all the time, I have so many.
A read/write cd drive.
15.LIKES:
Good manners, punctuality and smart appearance.
Men who know how to treat a girl right.
Black leather...
16.DISLIKES:
Radical feminists.
17.FAVOURITE MUSIC:
I was brought up on the classics:Wagner, Strauss, and so on, but I
like a lot of modern music though I have no particular favourites.
I like to let my hair down at a night club now and then.
18.FAVOURITE RECORD:
The Blue Danube Waltz!
I like to relax to the Orb and Sven Vath.
19.DISLIKED MUSIC:
Heavy metal and country and western.
20.MOST HATED SONG:
All the entries in the Eurovision Song Contest.
21.FAVOURITE TV:
The wall projector tv I have in my bedroom is rather good...
Oh, programs!
Well, I do not watch much tv, unless there is a movie on I have not
seen.
22. WORST TV:
Most tv from America.
Game shows.
Soccer - there is far too much on British tv, when MY favourite sports
are virtually ignored.
23. BEST FILMS:
Anything with Mel Gibson or Harrison Ford - Kostlich!
24. WORST FILMS:
Films about the war.
25. BEST GRUB:
Andrew C's savoury biscuits. Great for all night coding parties...
Chocolate!
Popcorn.
26. WORST GRUB:
Andrew C's burnt pasties.
(I am sorry Andrew, but that is not my idea of a cooked breakfast).
27. BEST DRINKS:
Coke
Dopplebock (a german beer).
Champagne !
28. WORST DRINKS:
English beer.
Turkish coffee.

32.HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN USING STOS?:
Only about 6 months.
33.ON A SCALE OF 1 to 10 HOW GOOD AT PROGRAMMING WOULD YOU SAY YOU
WERE?:
I am teaching myself Stos in what little spare time I have at the
moment, so I am making slow but sure progress.
34.CAN YOU LIST ANY P.D. ETC PROGRAMS YOU HAVE RELEASED?:
No, for I have not released any.
35.WHERE DO YOU NORMALLY GET YOUR ISSUE OF STOSSER FROM?:
I did not know about Stosser until I met Andrew Cato. He very kindly
let me copy all the back issues he has.
NOW TELL US A FEW BRIEF BITS AND BOBS ABOUT YOURSELF:
I am 162cm tall, with long blonde hair and blue eyes.
I work out regularly, and I am very fit.
Until last year I was serving as an officer in my countries
Airforce. Prior to that I was a student.
When I have the time, I enjoy water sports, riding, the
cinema, martial arts, and flying.
I enjoy meeting new people and have pen friends in several
countries, but as yet I only know a few people in England.
Because of pressing work commitments, I do not have much time to
socialise, so if any "stossers" would care to drop me a line, I
promise to reply when time allows.
Bis Später !
And now Andy Cato who surprisingly enough makes no mention whatsoever
of "burnt pasties" or "black leather?" :-)
1.NAME: Andy Cato
2.ALIASES: Big Mig.
3.AGE: 25
4.HOME: Newcastle Upon Tyne (Geordieland)
5.OCCUPATION: Work in a busy cinema up here. Boring as hell.
6.PREVIOUS COMPUTERS: My mate Allans' ST for a week.
7.PRESENT COMPUTER: 520 STFM (Now upgraded to 2.5 meg)
8.OTHER HARDWARE: External 3.5, 24 pin printer, various cartridges.
9.ST USED FOR: Mainly programming/.
10.BEST APPLICATIONS SOFTWARE: Devpac, Protext, Degas, Cyberpaint.
11.BEST GAMES: Flight Sims, Cannon Fodder, Archer Macleans' Pool
12.MOST USELESS HARDWARE: The ST Mouse and the key that fits every
disk box in the universe, you know the one. At one point I had
about eight of them and every one was the same!
13.MOST USELESS SOFTWARE: Most of the stuff off the ST Format
cover disks.
14.MOST DESIRED HARDWARE: Hard drive/CD drive, colour scanner.
15.LIKES: Meeting and talking to absolutely anyone when i'm at
work, especially the regular psychos who come in with bags of
fruit for the staff and the ones that stand so close to you that
they almost fuse with you!
16.DISLIKES: The fluff that you find in your naval when you get up
in the morning. Where does it come from? - it's always the same
colour as well. I've eliminated the underwear theory because when
I go to bed I don't wear any so it must come from the bedsheets.
So if it does then I must went through a whole quilt!
17.FAVOURITE MUSIC: Soul, Blues, Reggae, Rock n Roll, Jazz
18.FAVOURITE RECORDS: Walking on sunshine by Katrina and the waves
and Gimme hope Joanna by Eddie Grant - impossible to feel down
when you're singing these in a bar with lads after work on
Saturday night!
19.DISLIKED MUSIC: Thrash metal and country (although I did like
Dolly Partons' biggest hits!).
20.MOST HATED SONG: That one by Mandy Smith - can't remember what
it was called though. Something like "give me satisfaction....a
positive reaction.....". Anyone out there know the one?
21.FAVOURITE TV: Those late night French subtitled films....no not
really I like psychological thrillers and the odd 'Nam film, Tour
of Duty and The Twighlight Zone.......and the ones they used to
have on Channel 4 with the red triangle in the top corner of the
screen!
22. WORST TV: Anything with Michael Caine in!
23. BEST FILMS: Apocolypse Now, Once upon a time in America.
24. WORST FILMS: Anything with Michael Caine in!
25. BEST GRUB: Chicken Fu Yung with loads of curry from my local
chinese.
26. WORST GRUB: Those sad meals for one things. One WHAT are they
for?, one anorexic mouse? - come on, they're huge on the box but
when you get them out on the plate they're tiny. There should be
a scale like on matchbox cars. "Dinner shown 3/1 scale" or "Not
actual size" or something to that effect. Get it sorted!
27. BEST DRINKS: Becks --- and the pint of water by my bed when I
wake up with a hairy tongue the next morning after too many
bottles of it!
28. WORST DRINKS: Diet Coke, Fanta and Sprite in the same glass -
it goes a greeny brown colour and tastes rotten!
29. MOST ADMIRED PERSONS: -----------
30. MOST DISLIKED PERSONS: The sad gits on Blockbusters with the
stupid mascots called 'willy' who take the 'P' out of good old
Bob. Remind me never to go to the poly' and drink out of them
plastic glasses on friday nights again!
31.AMBITION IN LIFE: To live abroad somewhere really hot where I
can sit by a bar all day and drink cocktails, play pool and watch
all the fit women in small bikinis. Failing that i'll settle for
marrying a rich widow who's just about to croak. Failing that how
about inventing and patenting something extrordinary simple and
making wads of dosh off it. Failing that travel the world helping
starving amd needy children and become a Buddhist and live a life
of total celibacy. Failing that learn to play the guitar, join a
band and hit the road and have loads screaming women chasing and
lusting after me. Sounds good to me that one.....now where's that
guitar!
32.HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN USING STOS?; About 2 years
33.ON A SCALE OF 1 to 10 HOW GOOD AT PROGRAMMING WOULD YOU SAY YOU WERE?:
It's not a case of how good a programmer you are, nor is it how
many demos or games you have written. I personally have written
loads of programs and liked every one of them, call me biased.
Some of them are just stupid little things that amuse my tiny
mind. So I cannot really answer this question without taking all
factors into consideration and even then being as honest and
modest say about 5.
34.CAN YOU LIST ANY P.D. ETC PROGRAMS YOU HAVE RELEASED?:
Band On The Toon, Mods From The Gods
35.WHERE DO YOU NORMALLY GET YOUR ISSUE OF STOSSER FROM?:
Tony Greenwood
NOW TELL US A FEW BREIF BITS AND BOBS ABOUT YOURSELF:
I was born by a river.......in a little tent....and just like the
river i've been running ever since.........it's been a long time
coming....but I know a change gonna come.............sorry, I
slipped into my Sam Cooke impersonation there. What can I say?,
i'm such a quiet, innocent and angelic lad who just likes enjoying
himself.
AUF WEIDERSEHEN MATEY!
Next off, Auld Bastid
1.NAME: Robert Clifford Goodfellow
(any bloody jokes will be dealt with severly)
1b. MY NAME BACKWARDS: Trebor Drifilc Wollefdoog (see I'm Hungarian!)
2.ALIASES: Auld Bastid ('Grumpy' Auld 'moaning faced picky' Bastid)
3.AGE: Older than my teeth (30) [I object to Deanos comment that he's
'24 but feel 30' means that 30 is
old! ]
4.HOME: Not really, but the place where I currently sleep is 2a Colvin
Street, Dunbar
5.OCCUPATION: 'Resting' for ooo! a long time.
6.PREVIOUS COMPUTERS: ZX81, Vic 20, Dragon 32 (wayhay), Commodore 64,
Spectrum, Atari 800,800XL,130XE, Ness 286 16mhz PC (urgh!)
7.PRESENT COMPUTER: 4 Mb 1040 STe
8.OTHER HARDWARE: 30 Mb Hard Drive, SM124 Mono monitor, Philips
TV/Monitor, Golden Image scanner, BJ10e printer, Tandy 9 pin, Atari
laser printer (know a good engineer!), sampler, etc, etc.
9.ST USED FOR: Everything and anything. Letters to leaflets, Games to
designs, programs to erm..making naff tracker tunes.
10.BEST APPLICATIONS SOFTWARE: Calamus without doubt, STOS a close
second and Crackart.
11.BEST GAMES: Are there any? Rainbow Islands (I will complete it
eventually)
12.MOST USELESS HARDWARE: My Cheeta Mach I joystick - if I want
something to wobble that badly I'll jump up and down. And my laser
printer 'cos it's very dead and cost me #300 smackers so it's pretty
useless.
13.MOST USELESS SOFTWARE: Atari boot program. Why does it take 3 or 4
hours to boot from an empty drive?
14.MOST DESIRED HARDWARE: A good sampler, a flat bed scanner, a
colour laser printer, a multi synch << output truncated because of
greed >> and a Falcon. Oh and a virtual reality sex machine - it
would be a great ice breaker at parties.
15.LIKES: Oooer this is a big topic isn't it. Rain on my face..the
first snows of winter..the first snowdrop of the year..A pretty woman
in the summer sun... A program that runs bug free, first time (will
never happen but I can dream) Being *just* drunk enough not to care
if people are sniggering at my attempts to dance.
16.DISLIKES: Running out of Rizlas at three in the morning when I'm
dying for a fag. The entire Tory cabinet. Tory ministers in general.
Erm.. People who vote Tory.. Having electrodes attached to my
nipples. Being *too* drunk to dance and people telling me in graphic
detail of how much a twit I made of myself.
17.FAVOURITE MUSIC: Pink Floyd, Hendrix, most bluesy type stuff,
Vivaldis 4 seasons (Music not pizza), good and hard rave/techno dance
type thumpy tunes (NOT 2 Unlimited or other neutered 'Poppy' songs),
Jazz (ever heard Jimmy Smith - the only guy on the planet who could
make a Hammond organ sound pleasant)- well anything really. (notice I
keep my music tastes narrow!)
18.FAVOURITE RECORD: That Scaffolds song from the 60s about the
'medicinal compound' (childhood memory), Pink Floyds 'Shine On You
Crazy Diamond'.
19.DISLIKED MUSIC: Anything by Sidney Devine. Country and western
generally. Peters and Lee, Renee and Renata most things by Queen (he
may be dead but I still don't like them same goes for Curt C.) Thrash
metal, and the majority of American 'rock'.
20.MOST HATED SONG: the 'orrible whailing that Whitney Houston does
when singing 'I will always lurve youuuuooooo!'
21.FAVOURITE TV: Science proggies (Horizon, Equinox) Things with Rab C
Nesbitt and Craig Ferguson in them. The Big Breakfast (yeah it's naff
but a 7am who needs sense!)
22. WORST TV: Esther Rantzen and anything with the 'Aaah!' factor (If
I ever meet that 'effin dog that says 'sausages' I'll turn in into
half a pound of links. And 'This story is true' type programs.
23. BEST FILMS: Naked lunch (I don't understand it all but I'll get
there), Francois Truffaut films, Terminator, The Snapper, That Sinking
Feeling.
24. WORST FILMS: Any film that has the sweary words edited out. I
really F_oh dear_ing hate that.
25. BEST GRUB: Good curries. Not the 'oh oh my bums on fire' type but
the nice and hot with plenty of flavour type. Haggis (they have two
different sizes of leg you know? So they can run round mountain tops
without falling off!)
26. WORST GRUB: Kebabs. I like not to have my meat 'spiced' and stuck
to a metal pole, then spun around for 12 hours over a hot plate. Then
stuck into a piece of malformed bread with 3 day old lettuce and
covered in chilli sauce so flamin' hot you can't taste anywhing
anyway! Also lentil casserole and nut cutlets. Oh and naff chips.
27. BEST DRINKS: Malt whisky in decent measures (1/4 gill minimum),
Tenents 80 shillin' (that's bitter if you're English - probably)
28. WORST DRINKS: Any of that designer stuff they charge #3 for and
supply with a bit of citrus fruit crammed in the top of a 5 millilitre
bottle. Sparkling white wine.
29. MOST ADMIRED PERSONS: Robin Williams. Anyone who can stand on stage
and drivel total nonsense for 2 hours - unscripted - and get paid for
it, gets my vote.
30. MOST DISLIKED PERSONS: Anne and Nick along with *all* the daytime
TV "Personalities"
31.AMBITION IN LIFE: To be Rab C Nesbitt. (half way there) My major
task in life is to be able to follow the wisdom that is told in the
(hippy) poem 'Desiderata' (available from your local library and
bookstore - but it's *not* a 'laugh - it's like dead serious...man)
but as i'm a grumpy git I've a long way to go.
32.HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN USING STOS?: 3 years (-ish)
33.ON A SCALE OF 1 to 10 HOW GOOD AT PROGRAMMING WOULD YOU SAY YOU
WERE?:
Modesty does not allow me to answer this question and I refuse to put
minus numbers.
34.CAN YOU LIST ANY P.D. ETC PROGRAMS YOU HAVE RELEASED?:
Jiggsy, Shift-It and a couple of other bits and pieces.
35.WHERE DO YOU NORMALLY GET YOUR ISSUE OF STOSSER FROM?:
erm..Tony Greenwood
NOW TELL US A FEW BRIEF BITS AND BOBS ABOUT YOURSELF:
My bits and bobs have been with me for most of my life. They generally
keep themselves to themselves espcially in cold weather, but have on
occasion made a fool of themselves.
Now it's the turn of Kenneth Ames.....

30. Most Disliked Person: Rowan Atkinson
31. Ambition in Life: To live to 70
Bits and Bobs.
Had this computer for 18 months, have been Stossing for about 12
of them. Got Beginners Guide to STOS Basic after reading review
in STOSSER - great help and inspiration. That goes for STOSSER
as well.
Looking forward to becoming fluent in STOS and being able to
understand what all these extensions are for.
Next off, Robin Ball......
1.NAME: Robin Ball
2.ALIASES: Nosferatu, now mutated into Nosferatu Productions. (It
gives the impression that there is more than one person working on my
projects, but now everyone knows the truth., Oh well.)
3.AGE: 19
4.HOME: Strange category, surely address would be more appropriate.
4and a half. Address: 33/35 Whistley Road,
Potterne,
Devizes,
Wiltshire,
SN10 5QY
5.OCCUPATION: Art Student. And part time indie programmer of course.
And graphic artist.
6.PREVIOUS COMPUTERS: MSX (Mitsubishi ML-F80 if you really want to
know.)
7.PRESENT COMPUTER: 520 STFM (now a 1040 I suppose, since I upgraded
the memory.)
8.OTHER HARDWARE: Small collection of duff mice. Videomaster
cartridge. Star LC24-200 colour printer. Erm... Quickshot Maverick
joystick... that's about it. (I'm still working off a colour telly and
don't have a hard drive).
9.ST USED FOR: All sorts of stuff. Mostly games orientated. Playing
them and writing them and doing the graphics for them and also a spot
of sampling for them. Not music though, I have no musical talent. I
also use it for quite a bit of word processing.
10.BEST APPLICATIONS SOFTWARE: Deluxe Paint ST, without a doubt.
Protext comes a close second though. Mainly because it was free(ish)
with a copy of ST Format. The Videomaster software's pretty good too I
suppose. (tip- you can pinch the samples from games by loading the
whole program file into Videomaster as RAW sample data, then scrub
through the mess until you find something that doesn't sound like a
spectrum loading stuff. Then cut that as a block and save it. Um..
that's not really allowed though so don't try and use them in your own
games.) Audio Sculpture is also the best sound tracker available on
the ST, mostly because it comes with a manual and doesn't use bloody
hexadecimal numbers all over the place.
11.BEST GAMES: Elite 2. Brilliant graphics and gameplay. Don't believe
what they say about the speed of the screen updates. If you want
everything to move quicker, you can set the level of detail to low.
Chaos Engine is also brilliant fun. great with a mate (providing you
let them play it a bit first otherwise they'll die quicker than the
computer controlled players.) I suppose Lemmings 2 is quite good, but
I never really liked the Lemmings games. I've played a demo of Zool
and it looks quite good. At least it doesn't use bloody flick
scrolling like Titus the Fox and all those games. STOS could do better
than all that lot, particularly if you use the Missing Link. Some good
independant games now- Hector vs the Mutant Vampire Tomatoes From Hell
is excellent fun. Updated in the true sense of the word from the
ancient arcade game- Space Panic. It's packed with brilliant features
and has great graphics and sound. Dead Or Alive is a damn good text
adventure by my mate Kev Davis, and so is Dead Too but that hasn't
been released yet. Bio-Hazard is good but some of the colour schemes
are almost impossible to make out (level five is in a range of colours
from pure blue through to black, not easy to see). Storm's not too bad
but my game- Alien Thing should be better, particularly because it'll
have more variety in gameplay and the graphics are original and not
pinched from Space Crusade (I sussed you out you sneaky plagiarizers).
Also, look out for Endurance, the hardest and most challenging 3DCK
game I've seen yet (apart from my own Infiltration of course). That's
about the lot I think.
12.MOST USELESS HARDWARE: Golden Image brush mouse. Completely
hopeless since it's main use is for graphics and yet it's harder to
draw with than a normal mouse. Still, at least I got Deluxe Paint with
it for #25 quid, cheaper than buying DPaint on it's own.
13.MOST USELESS SOFTWARE: Truepaint on the ST (probably good on the
Falcon but it's unberably slow otherwise). Flair Paint (I've never
known loading or saving pictures to be so confusing). And STOS before
the introduction of the Missing Link, I'm afraid. It now fits into the
best application category but I didn't put it there because the
Missing Link has nothing to do with Mandarin and that Lionet bloke.
14.MOST DESIRED HARDWARE: Falcon of course. Especially one with 4 meg
of memory and a hard drive. I'll buy one when I can afford it,
probably a year from now or more. Or a hard drive failing that.
15.LIKES: Eating, Sleeping and especially watching TV. And drawing and
programming on the computer.
16.DISLIKES: Getting up early (even before 8 on college mornings.)
17.FAVOURITE MUSIC: The Cure and lots of old sixties stuff, The Kinks
(when they were good) The Beatles, The Doors, The rolling Stones etc.
18.FAVOURITE RECORD: Three Imaginary Boys by The Cure usually but at
the moment it's Venus in Furs by the Velvet Underground (used in the
Dunlop advert but that's excusable since it's such a good record and
since the advert's really weird), I heard there's an awful re-release
by Lou Reed on his own, but I've not heard it.
19.DISLIKED MUSIC: All rave and most modern pop.
20.MOST HATED SONG: All rave. It's all basically the same so there's
no point in picking out one song in particular to victimize.
21.FAVOURITE TV: Lots. The obvious Red Dwarf, Monty Python, Hitch
Hiker's Guide, Star Trek, Dr Who etc. Also The Day Today and Ren and
Stimpy. Both extremely strange, just what I like. And Penn and Teller.
22. WORST TV: Dunno, I don't watch any bad stuff so I'm being a bit
prejudiced but Noel's House Party and Blind Date must come pretty high
up the list. All game shows and anything starring Michael Barrimore or
Paul Daniels or Jeremy Beadle. Oh, and many American sit-coms too...
most of them in fact. And almost all adverts.
23. BEST FILMS: Once again obvious stuff like Terminator and Aliens
and the life of Brian but also Baron Munchhausen and Metropolis.
24. WORST FILMS: 80s American teen 'comedies'. No need to say any more
I think.
25. BEST GRUB: Traditional English roast beef with roast potatoes and
Yorkshire pud etc. and Macaroni cheese and cheese and potatoe pie and
lots of things with cheese involved somewhere.
26. WORST GRUB: Anything with Dill in (gherkins for example), I hate
the smell of it and the taste of it. I must be alergic to it or
something. I also hate prawns, it's like eating insects whole, yuk.
27. BEST DRINKS: Coffee, Pepsi, Lilt (not diet lilt) and Newcastle
Brown Ale.
28. WORST DRINKS: Spirits. I don't understand how people can drink
them without already being inebriated.
29. MOST ADMIRED PERSONS: Kev Davis. What a brilliant wit. Dave Braben
for pure dedication. Billy Allan and Colin Watt of Top Notch for
making STOS useable and even impressive (although not for their quick
response to letters, two months and still no word, dear me.) Ian Scott
for his wit in Grandad and G2. I suppose I also admire Jeff Minter for
being successful at that shareware lark.
30. MOST DISLIKED PERSONS: All the software houses who galloped away
from the ST when one or two games started to be Amiga and PC only.
It's down to them that the ST dropped so rapidly out of public
interest. And Jeff Minter for being successful at that shareware lark
when no-one else was.
31.AMBITION IN LIFE: To be famous. As famous as Simon Bisley or Glenn
Fabry in the commercial art world or as famous as Mark Coleman or Dan
Malone in the computer graphics world or that bleedin' Minter bloke in
the programming world (not much chance of the latter since I'm a bit
thick at this programming game).
32.HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN USING STOS?; About three or four years if
you count when I first got it with my ST or about six months if you
start counting when I got the Missing Link and discovered once again
that it's quite good really.
33.ON A SCALE OF 1 to 10 HOW GOOD AT PROGRAMMING WOULD YOU SAY YOU
WERE?: Hmm.. A bit tricky really, it varies depending on all sorts of
things (air pressure or similar such feeble excuses) or what language
I'm using.- 3DCK FCL- about 8- pretty good
STOS- about 6.5-7 depending on mood
GFA Basic- 4-6 depending on mood (I don't have a manual so
I'm doing alright really)
Assembly- 1- dreadful.
34.CAN YOU LIST ANY P.D. ETC PROGRAMS YOU HAVE RELEASED?: Yup-
Infiltration- Extremely hard 3DCK game. If you're fed up of finishing
3D games in one sitting, then try this, you probably won't finish it
without help from me.
Secret Weapon demo- A pre-release demo version of this up-coming 3DCK
game. Much better than Infiltration and probably one of the most
realistic 3D games you'll find with towns and buildings (and trees )to
explore and a proper mission to discover and solve. This'll be great
when I finish writing it.
Borders disk for 3DCK User Group. Not really on general release since
it's not of much use to anyone but 3DCK programmers, but it is Public
Domain.
Lighting Effects in 3D games. See above.
What follows is a list of work in progress.
Escape From The Dungeons of Trax- A pointy/clicky graphic adventure
based upon the Perpetual Reality graphic adventure engine written by
Kev Davis.
Secret Weapon- See above section for more details.
Korogasho- I'm just doing the graphics for this game of gladiator
management being written by Digital Dimension mostly in STOS I believe
but possibly with some assembly thrown in for speed reasons.
Alien Thing- A game to demonstrate the excellence of the Missing Link
commands. Should put Storm to shame.
I'm also writing a few articles for the OCL diskzine- ST Beermat.
I'm quite busy on the whole I suppose.
35.WHERE DO YOU NORMALLY GET YOUR ISSUE OF STOSSER FROM?: LAPD.
NOW TELL US A FEW BREIF BITS AND BOBS ABOUT YOURSELF: I think I
already have to stupidly long lengths. Still, here goes- I'm a 19 year
old art student currently on an Art Foundation course but will be off
who knows were before the end of this year. I've had my ST for about 4
years or so (I think). I tried to release my games as Shareware but
only made about #20 so gave up on that idea and I now work for
Organised Chaos Licenceware (the fairest face of Licenceware) with Kev
Davis and co. I haven't finished anything since then so I don't yet
know how lucrative it might be but I suspect I'll make more than #20
in two years. I've been working on the graphics for Korogasho for far
too long (more than a year I think) but they are good (dare I say the
best yet in an independant production, I think I do). I'm not a very
good programmer but I do my best and I do have an imagination. I'm a
pretty good graphic artist and although being in contact with a fair
few programmers, I haven't been asked to do many pics. I like all
sorts of games except sport sims which I hate. Erm...Is there anything
that I haven't already divulged... Oh yes, I'd like to get in contact
with anyone who lives near me and in particular with anyone who owns a
Falcon, I'd hate to save up all that money only to find it's not as
good as it's made out to be.
That's got to be it now.
CHEERS!
Ta, very much. Bye
Now it's the turn of Nev.......

DEANOOOOOOOOO.
NOW TELL US A FEW BREIF BITS AND BOBS ABOUT YOURSELF:
I'm gods gift to women (hang on a sec I am god). Seriously, I spend a lot
of my time programming and spending time with my STE. I am not a sad man
who spends his entire life computing, because I have a good social life and
at the moment I am doing an IT National course at college. I passed the
first course with ease and I hope to go to uni to get a degree in programming
. I also run 'ORBITAL SOFTWARE' . I would also like to thank
DEANO, CHRIS SHARP, ORM, STODGE and ICEMAN.
CHEERS!
