ASCONV
""""""
Though a provisional title given by this reviewer, this program is EVERY
diskmag editors DREAM and though it was written exclusively for ST+ by our very
own resident SC--FI Editor, Peter Augustin, I couldn't in all concience keep
this proggy from the other ST mag editors, such a profound program is this it
will (and HAS) altered the way diskmags will look in the future...all in only
12k.....
The best things come in small packages, this adage fit perfectly.
ASCONV is a small, but VERY effective text convertor, the guy's at MAGGIE,
WARP, FOCUS and many other diskmag HQ's will appriciate the value of this
program to it's fullest extent but for you, Mr.Diskmag reader here is what this
convertor is all about.
One of the WORST jobs in editing a diskmag is manually tidying up ASCII text
files, literally DAY'S can be spent sorting through all those kilobytes of text
making it look tidy enough to make an appearance.....
As most of you will know FIRST WORD and WORD+ can save text files either in
it's own format or in ASCII format however, once in ASCII ALL the original
layout data is lost, it IS possible to reload the ASCII file (and indeed ANY
ASCII text file) however any changes you might want to make must be then done
line by line....this is what takes up massive amounts of time and as such has
led to 'un-justified' text files being allowed onto a diskmag, now however,
ASCII files have a new enemy and we diskmag editors have a powerful friend in
the shape of ASCONV.
This program converts ASCII files into WORD+ format, this means that if you
have a file that looks like this:
<PENCOLOR>2
This file is a little example of what an UN-JUSTIFIED file looks like, you
will notice that all the text is uneven, the ends of each line is NOT the same
length in most cases, this leads to HORRIBLE looking files especially if
there loaded into a text displayer (as used in ST+, MAGGIE ect, not only does
this situation create a bad looking file but it also does little for the
diskmags image.
<PENCOLOR>1
Now, does the following look better.....
<PENCOLOR>2
This file is a little example of what an UN-JUSTIFIED file looks like, you
will notice that all the text is uneven, the ends of each line is NOT the same
length in most cases, this leads to HORRIBLE looking files especially if there
loaded into a text displayer (as used in ST+, MAGGIE ect, not only does this
situation create a bad looking file but it also does little for the diskmags
image.
<PENCOLOR>1
....of course it does, it's easier to follow and it 'flows' along the sides of
the screen and THAT is what makes this program unique, oh I don't know, I spoil
you lot don't I, pics in the text and now NEAT text as well, ST+ is truly the
king of the zines (and were only 5 issue's old)....
As for a rating for ASCONV, well, I think anything less than 200% would be an
insult therefore I'll give it 201%....
Dave.
