Review - MDK - Shiny Entertainment. (Street Price £29.99)
MDK is one of the other games that the PC gaming community has awaited for a
while now. The game requires high specifications (reccomended spec of at least
P120, 16MB) as the complexity of the graphics is very high. This is because the
game is played with a sprite main character on a polygon background.
The main game consists of a 3rd person perspective shoot 'em up, with your main
character (a silver man) starting off equipped with a simple hand gun, and
ending the game equipped with "The World's Most Interesting Bomb".
There are two things that set this game apart from all the others in it's
field. Firstly the presentation - everything is highly polished and well
designed. Immacualate graphics and sounds help convey an overall good
impression (the game also has some underlying humour), and the second is the
sniper mode. The sniper mode is wonderful. Hit space, and cross-hairs appear,
and you can choose from a variety of bombs and grenades. This certainly adds to
the fun of killing things. This game, however, also suffers a couple of
problems. (I know, I know, I don't like any games...).
It's completely and totally devoid of originality apart from the sniper mode.
The game itself is like a 3D Prince Of Persia with guns. The monsters are
bland, and the entire thing is far, far too easy. It took me less than a week
(about an hour a night) to complete the entire game from start to finish. It's
that simple. Add to that the fact that you can download a patch from
http://www.shiny.com that allows you to save mid-level, and it all combines to
produce a product that is satisfying in the short-term, but offers no real
long-term appeal. The game also lacks a multi-player mode, meaning that once
you've completed all 7 of the levels the game has to offer, you'll be stuck for
something to do.... I suggest using the CD as a frisbee...
Overall 70% if you've got money to burn for a sadly short-term thrill.
