Film News Scoooooop!
by Jody Smith
Kerbang! Kerboom! After exclusively revealing the animated Channel
Four series of Terry Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters and Soul Music, way back in ST+
issue 9, September time, I can now tell of the before-it-even-gets-the-chance-
to-so-much-as-become-hot-on-the-press news that the ancient, classic novel that
practically everyone who is literate and has a life has read, Lord Of The
Rings, is to be made into an epic feature film!
Not a simple straight-to-television Channel Four picture, but a mega,
blockbusting world-wide cinema release. Details are sparse at this stage, but
despite the production being entirely American funded, the promised all-star
cast is to consist almost totally of British actors. Confirmed to star are
Sean Connery, Sean Bean and Tim Roth, with more to leap aboard the band dragon,
later on.
Returning to all things Pratchett, there is an official Disc World film
in our midst, though date of production is still sketchy, knowing that the 10
million pound film rights were aquired some time ago. Expect another totally
British bias cast and a lot of hysteria to be started when it eventually does
happen, with strong rumours that the screenplay - not written by Terry
Pratchett himself, after stating that screenplays were not his territory to
tread in - will be adapted from the very first two Disc World novels, The
Colour Of Magic and the Light Fantastic, as they seem the most commercially
viable, due to the grand portrayal of the Disc World itself.
No news has been given as yet, but I would bet my money on Terry
Gilliam being set as director, though after the mess he made of Time Bandits
and The Adventures Of Baron Munchaesen, this could be a fatal wound on the
film's success.
Though the rough details of the Disc World films have been kicking
around in one place or another for a while now, hopefully the Lord Of The Rings
news will be reaching you here in ST+ before it hits the official film media,
so remember where you heard it first.
Oh, and by the way - Did any of you realise that they're going to be
making some new Star Wars films?
