ST Highway issue 6
Review by Dave.
Ho, Hum, where do I start, there's loads......not so much file wise but
comment wise [I can just here the Ooo's comming from the STH crew now ;)]
From the beginning......
Er, methinks they've kinda stomped on ST+'s toes somewhat, they nicked our
bootsector [boo hiss], cut it to pieces and then reassembled it, I mean, how
could they do such a thing, aside from the fact that it was totally cruel it
was also VERY naughty [Legal action has been taken :))]
The fact that our very own Steve Moore was at least credited with the coding
of the said bootsector did little to soothe heartache of loosing such a lovely
piece of code....
Still, it's said that imitation is the highest form of flattery so I guess
were about as flattered as... well, someone who's flattered really.
WOSSIT LIKE THEN?...
Jake Nicholls has left the big chair, a new chap going by the name of Dave
Skillin has sat down in his place, is the change in Editor noticable in STH,
quite simply, yes, a much more proffesional look is evident but, let's start
from the start.
Skipping on to the intro, the usual list of greets and thanks assault your
eye's along with some pretty interesting backdrop pattern waving about in tune
to what sounds like DIGI-DRUM MUSIC, after a very short while this urge to
press the space key to move onwards rushes through you...only, it's not the
space key, it's the number one key... remember?..
A press of the number 1 key?? sends you hurtling towards the all new main
shell....methinks something like using the F1 key, ESC key ect. would have
been more logical but then, I guess there are no Vulcans on the STH team...
The shell is...well, very reminiscent of another zine I know of, now, what's
it's name?, ah, that would be telling....
The shell graces your eye's with a rather nice looking piccie that has just
the right amount of room to fit a window in it, there is no moues interface
however, the up and down arrow buttons would have you think otherwise (as I did
on more than one occasion).
So, there is no mouse to use on the main menu and, as far as I could tell no
help screen. The mag itself is laid out in a very orderly fashion though I
must admit, the menu text scrolls a little too fast for me and the main window
could have been a little bigger...
The actual text displayer used is a rather nodescript ASCII displayer, it's
functional but unfortunately unpredictable, on a few occasions I brought about
a crash simply by pressing the left/right cursor key's, not very inspiring.
Viewing piccies from the menu is an option and, one I'm happy to say is
becoming popular with diskmags though, to be fair, Maggie has been doing this
for quite a while.
After a few minutes a neat little screensaver pos up, a godsend for those who
tend to leave their computer on it's own for extended periods of time.
Aside from this, STH has a fair few interesting files, not the least of which
was a rather brutal attack on the spicey girlies, a total coincidence that I'm
listening to their new album as I type this...
(yes, I know...but hell,. they are number one almost everywhere, they can't be
there if no-one listens to 'em, besides, most of the 'B-Side stuff is actually
quite good...have YOU listened to them?...ahem, to continue..).
I thought the threat of 'write or we go' was totally OTT, an early lesson
most zine editors learn is NOT to pressure folk...I myself learned this over
and over however, STH managed to inject a little humour into the plea, who
knows, maybe I'll type a little missive or two, maybe you will as well, unless
you like the idea of visiting Satan that is...
ST Highway is a fair effort that, whilst needing to learn a little has a lot
of potential, there is a lot of support for STH [judging from all the letters
they've printed] and have a good foot in the door, a little more care and
attention could see STH well on the way to becoming a permanent fixture on the
zine scene...
Is it worth it?......
Forgetting the bootsector... :)
INTRO - 55% - Fun...for a minute or two...
SHELL - 72% - Not very original and a few bugs to iron out yet..
ARTICLE [count] - 69% - Plenty to read though simple, plain ASCII.
ARTICLE [content] - 81% - Some interesting and very informative articles,
everything from Spice girl bashing to game hints,
something for everyone here.
EXTRA FEATURES - 90% - Stunning bootsector <g> and nice desktop piccie (for
when you return to the desktop..
OVERALL - 73% - A nice, if familiar, attempt at a serious diskzine.
NOTE: I have refrained from making refferences to ST+ however, it's not unfair
to say that ST+ was clearly the template for STH, you have to see it to believe
it :))
For the latest issue of ST Highway write to:
Dave Skillin,
Polmaise Farm,
Cambusbarron,
Stirling

Don't forget to include a disk and S.S.A.E... :)
