Pacifist
Review by Martin Wilson
Response By Tony Greenwood
MW: Now here's an annoying development. A fully fledged Atari computer running
on a Pentium PC for the price of a phone call or disk. Unlike most emulators it
TG: It runs perfectly on my DX 4X100 So does not NEED a pentium,
MW: actually works and in many ways surpasses the performance of a real ST. Its
TG: In my opinion it certainly does not surpass a real ATARI ST
MW: not all bad news for original Atari computer users though as there are a
few problems, Hurray! Firstly it doesn't fully emulate the Atari STs Graphics
TG: You are using a BETA copy.. we all are, the emulator is work in progress
and a new version usualy arrives at least monthly if not more regular, it is a
little off to complain or even try to point out problems on beta software,
MW: chip. Software needs to avoid overscan and interupt palette changes. The
sound generally works very well but certain sound effects don't sound quite
right.
TG: The Yamaha sound chip is emulated, recently FM Sampled sound has been
added,no STe stuff. these sections really are BETA parts :)
MW: of things that don't work. Compatibility can be improved by using a VBE
graphics driver to enable certain types of graphics but I haven't tried that
TG: I have and it works great.....
MW: The actual PC I'm using is a Compaq with a Pentium 120 chip, 52MEG of RAM,
TG: Mine is a DX4x100 with PCI Gfx and 16Mg of ram and a 1.6 HD, Pacifist takes
up about 170kb of disk space.. that is equivelant to about 5 PI1 pictures or
one good sized JPG picture.. in other words you could get about 5 PaCifiST on
one normal ATARI ST disks....
MW: This computer enables me to run Pacifist at upto about 3x normal ST speed.
Its
TG: That is in FULL Speed mode
MW: hard to grade performance accurately when it excels at different tasks in a
different proportion to normal Atari's. Gembench reckons at full speed the
TG: I really do not understand why you have written the above statement,it is
totally wrong and missleading.. PaCifiST is an ATARI emulator, as such you can
run it on a P200 P20000 You can run it on the biggest and fastest computer you
can find, it will still run at 8mhz and emulate an ATARI ST...The author very
kindly added a configuration where you could set the emulator to full speed,
THEN you would get the results you speak of..ie: varying.. But running the
emulator as intended will give you an 8mHz emulation of an ATARI ST as
advertised, and on ANY machine with a minimum DX specification,
MW: integer calculations are upto 15x the speed of the normal ST but other
tests
TG: Use ST EMULATION in the setup and run the program as an ST emulator.....
MW: Its worth pointing out that Pacifist only emulates normal ST graphics modes
and the old 3 channel sound chip. There's no blitter or enhanced sound
TG: Why is it worth poining out?..It is an STFM emulator.. it wont emulate the
STe or a TT or a Mega, iTs an STFM emulator? so why would it?
MW: hardware. What is novel is the ability to use a lot of RAM upto 14MEG it
seems. I wanted to emulate an ST with about 45 MEG of RAM but no go.
TG: tsk... again you are being rather tight here.. How many FM owners do you
know with that much memory.. Its an STFM emulator !!!!!!!! but as with the
speed option, the author kindly added the ability to use what memory you have..
well why not when its there.. however you seem to be taking these as bad
points?
MW: In use the STs graphics look very blocky on a PC monitor especially when
the ST's border isn't emulated. The high res nature of a PC monitor means
theres no blurring of the pixels that you get from a TV everything is razor
sharp and blocky. In fact it was so blocky that it reminded me of the old CPC
computers.
TG: I agree.. But as it is a STFM emulator for the PC then there isnt much way
around this unless you supply it with a lead to make the PC work on a telly?
MW: Pacifist can make use of your PCs hard disk, floppy disks (although this is
buggy) or as the author recommends Disk Images. A utility called ImgBuild
enables the PC to read ST disks and create disk images. Which can then be
TG: Only for now?... as the software is in BETA then it would be irrisponsible
of the author to let you have full acces to your PC hardware when the results
are not fully known ?
MW: stored on the PC's hard drive and by pressing F12 can be used as if they
were in the A or B drive. Imgbuild had trouble with some formats and doesn't
work at all with most protected disks. I used E Copy on my Falcon to create
disk
TG: Protected disks are protected so you will NOT copy them, so this can hardly
be described as a bug or a downer ?
MW: Its insulting really that an Atari computer can be emulated in this way but
to be honest its still no match to actually using a real ST especially a later
enhanced one.
TG: I Fully and totally agree with you, an emulator can emulate, but can not be
a replacement for the ST....
MW: Here's a speed test using Gembench to gauge the performance difference
between Pacifist and the original STFM. This is using Pacifists fast mode. The
end
TG: This test is only interesting to see how fast you can make an ATARI prg
work, It is a false test if actualy testing the performance of an ATARI
emulator because you ran it in fast mode.. run in ST mode as the emulator
should be,
Finally......This response is in no way meant to be argumentative in any way,
But I did feel that you were doing the author of PaCifiST a great injustice,
Personally I have used this software to great extent since its first release
and indeed I make and Compile the ST+ Shell with it.. then test on the ST, I
own the FULL commercial version of Gemulator, I have tried TOS 2 WIN and other
emulators.. I am not alone in naming PaCifiST as the best ATARI emulator on the
PC...........
It is also quite funny to see the PC BOMB out :)))))
Cheers.........!ynoT
