====== STaccato ======
Program by Leo de Wit, July '87, translated into English for the net 880903
PART 1: Global information
POSSIBILITIES:
-------------
The program show a playing piano on which pieces of music are
performed.
With this program you can:
A) Listen to Songs/Tunes/Pieces (simple)
B) Sing along with (Folk)songs; the accompanying text is shown along
with the playing (a bit harder).
C) Guess titles of pieces; this can be done per type of music and has
a competitive element because of the accessory 'SUPERLEAGUE' (difficult).
D) Create your own pieces; because the music is stored as simple text
files it is possible - by means of an editor - to add your own tunes to
the repertory (very hard; teacher / pupil with musical feeling); the
editor is NOT a part of the program. Composition will be explained in the
document COMPOSE.DOC.
GETTING STARTED:
---------------
Start the program STACCATO.PRG by clicking on its icon. STaccato
starts with a folder that equals the current folder (this will often be the
folder where STACCATO.PRG also can be found).
In case you want to play songs from a different disk, you have to know how
to change the folder in the item-selector from GEM:
a) click upon the folder name (or use the cursor up key).
b) change the folder name (by BACKSPACE or ESCAPE and alpha keys).
If you put the diskette into drive B, you fill in B: .
c) click on the bar below the folder name; the system shows the
files/folders selected. You can select sub folders or return to the parent
folder by clicking on the icon in question (for sub folders the icon before
the folder name or the folder name itself, for the parent folder the close
icon). Also for choosing/guessing a tune the fileselector is used.
RUNNING THE PROGRAM:
-------------------
At program start the question is put to you whether you're an amateur
or expert user of STaccato. As soon as you have any experience with the
program, you can hit RETURN (expert!); the program is somewhat less abundant
then in its help info.
Next the question is posed whether you want to listen or guess.
LISTENING:
---------
The first option (listening) matches A) and B) of the afore mentioned
possibilities of the program; you can listen and - in case of the folksongs
- sing along also. By means of the fileselector you indicate which tune
(file name) of which genre (folder name) you want to hear.
When the song is over, you can choose the next one from the fileselector,
or Cancel to return to the level where you choose between listening and
guessing.
GUESSING:
--------
The second option (guessing) matches C) of the afore mentioned
possibilities.
You indicate first in which genre you want to guess by selecting a folder
with the fileselector. Use for this purpose the icons as indicated
above. Click on OK or press RETURN to confirm the choice.
Now a series of 'gambles' starts that you can abort any moment. You will
see the minimal number of 'gambles' so you can compete in the 'SUPERLEAGUE'.
A 'gamble' looks like this: one of the files from the folder is chosen
and played, but you won't see which one (like you do at 'LISTENING').
As soon as yuo think you know the title, you press the right mouse button;
this stops the playing and you can indicate - again by the fileselector -
which filename it was (the files have a suggestive name, mostly an
abbreviation of the song's title).
Make this choice as quickly as possible; the time is taken from the starting
of the song to the choosing of the filename. You can hear from the sound
of the tune that is played now whether you were successfull or not (b.t.w.
you can even abort that tune with the right mouse button).
Finally you can choose between stopping and continuing. If you stop you
will see your score and if you are joining the SUPERLEAGUE (the best 10)
this result is also shown and you will be asked whether you want to store
this; if yes, you should make sure the diskette can be written to.
B.T.W. The SUPERLEAGUE is stored as a file in the same folder as that
used for guessing in. When you stop guessing, you can select again in the
main menu between listening and guessing.
COMPOSING YOURSELF:
------------------
For a description of the music file format and how you can create your
own music I refer to the document COMPOSE.DOC.
