  1. Feature list for NeoDesk 2.0 - The Desktop Alternative

  7. These features are not in any particular order.  NeoDesk is a new desktop
  8. which replaces the built-in desktop in the Atari ST.  It adds many new
  9. features and enhancements which the built-in desktop does not offer.
  10. Several features which are duplicates of features already in the built-in
  11. desktop are not mentioned.  If some features are missing, updates of this
  12. file will follow (some probably are).
  13.  
  14. It is our belief that NeoDesk cannot really be described with words, it
  15. can only be truly understood when experienced first hand.  We invite you
  16. to stop at your local dealer for a demonstration or to try our demo.

  23.   o 100% legal code, will work with all present and future ROM versions.

  25.   o Resolution independent, will work on higher resolution systems such as
  26.      Moniterm, HyperScreen, BigScreen, HirezColor, and the Atari TT/68030.

  47.   o High-Speed file operations.  As many files as will fit in memory are
  48.      read in before being written out.  Not only does it elimiate most
  49.      disk swaps, but there is an incredible speed improvement if using
  50.      a hard disk.  Example:  If you are copying 100 small 1K files from
  51.      drive A to drive B, the built-in desktop would require 400 disk swaps.
  52.      NeoDesk would perform the same operation in a single disk swap.
  53.  
  54.   o Install a Degas or NeoChrome picture as the background for the desktop.
  55.  
  56.   o Place desktop icon anywhere on the desktop, unlike the built-in GEM
  57.      desktop which forces you to place desktop icons on a pre-set grid.

  59.   o Ability to automatically unload and reload itself whenever a 
  60.      program is executing.  This optional method reduces memory consumption
  61.      to 21K of memory when running a program.

  63.   o Custom volume name which:
  64.       - Can be up to 20 characters long.
  65.       - May contain any character.
  66.       - Can be created, edited, and deleted at any time.
  67.       - Is displayed on the bottom of every window.

  69.   o Archive bit support in all ROMs (as defined in TOS 1.4)

  71.   o Separate Floppy Drive, Hard Drive, and RamDisk icons instead of the
  72.      original "drawer" icons.

  74.   o New printer icon.
  75.     - Print files by dragging them directly to the printer icon.
  76.     - Up to 10 files may be sent if using the printer queue, more if not.
  77.       (Amount being limited by how many files can be selected at once)

  79.   o Any icon may be opened directly from the keyboard.

  81.   o Any file or program icon may be dragged onto the desktop. A copy of
  82.      that icon is created and NeoDesk will remember the original name and
  83.      path of that icon.  This allows you to:
  84.       - Open or Select any file or program directly from the desktop, no
  85.         need to open any windows or folders.
  86.       - Rename any desktop icon to a more convenient (and easier to
  87.         remember) name.  NeoDesk will handle remembering the original
  88.         filename.  (Imagine..."Spectre 128" instead of "1SPEC190.PRG")
  89.       - Install a unique character (A-Z,1-9) to that icon and then
  90.         select or open it right from the keyboard (hot keys).

  92.   o Enhanced "show file" offers:
  93.       - Shows a file to the screen immediately after double clicking on it
  94.         (drag the file to the printer icon to print)
  95.       - Stops after every screen length (even if it is not a text file).
  96.       - Choose between two different file display modes.
  97.       - Exit/Quit the file display at ANY time.
  98.       - Use the mouse buttons to page forward and exit.
  99.       - Displays extended characters.
  100.       - With the selection of a keyboard key, allows the file display of 
  101.         ANY file, including: Installed applications, executable programs,
  102.         and batch files.
  103.  
  104.   o Enhanced "Open" command:
  105.       - Select any number of files to be passed on as "file parameters"
  106.         to the application you are opening.
  107.       - Supports opening batch files (".BTP" and ".BAT" files).
  108.       - New "parameters" dialog box for applications ending in ".BTP"
  109.         or ".TTP" which allows:
  110.           - Up to 126 characters may entered.
  111.           - Text case is preserved (uppercase or lowercase) unlike the
  112.             built-in desktop.
  113.           - File input redirection.
  114.           - File output redirection (to a new file, appended to an already
  115.             existing file, and to the printer).
  116.  
  117.   o High-speed Custom windows which are much faster than standard GEM
  118.      windows and also offer:
  119.       - Scrolling will automatically repeat, even on TOS 1.0 machines.
  120.       - Windows may be opened or closed directly from the keyboard.
  121.       - Icons are formatted to fit in the set "width" of the window; if
  122.         there are more icons that fit in the window, they will only scroll
  123.         vertically.  This makes it much easier to find any icons and to
  124.         have windows (in Show as Icons) side by side.
  125.       - Full Screen button can be temporarily reprogrammed to jump between
  126.         any two preset window sizes.
  127.       - New "Send Window to Back" button will execute the exact opposite of
  128.         "selecting" or "topping" a window, sending it behind any other
  129.         NeoDesk windows.
  130.       - Custom volume name displayed at the bottom of the window.
  131.       - The "Window Information Line" will display:
  132.           When no files are selected:
  133.             - Current number of files in present directory.
  134.             - Total filesize of files in present directory.
  135.           When you select a single file:
  136.             - Its filesize.
  137.             - Last modification or creation date.
  138.             - Last modification or creation time.
  139.             - Read/Write or Read-only status.
  140.             - Archive bit status.
  141.           When you select a single folder:
  142.             - Date of creation.
  143.             - Time of creation.
  144.           When you select multiple files:
  145.             - Total number of files selected.
  146.             - Total filesize of selected files.
  147.       - The "Window Information Line" may be scrolled when the window is
  148.         too small to display all of its contents.
  149.       - Arrow keys may be used for scrolling both the window and
  150.         its information line.
  151.       - Any non-selected or non-topped window may still be resized,
  152.         scrolled, and any of its icons may be selected and opened.
  153.       - Up to seven windows open at any given time, instead of the
  154.         previous limit of four in the built-in GEM desktop.
  155.       - Media_change is executed whenever you press the [Esc] key or when
  156.         a disk is copied.

  177.         - Number of Hidden and/or System Files
  178.         - Total Hidden Bytes
  179.       For Files:
  180.         - Length of File
  181.         - Last Modified or Created Date
  182.         - Last Modified or Created Time
  183.         - Read and Write Status

  185.   o Enhanced "Show Information..." also allows the user to:
  186.       For Drives:
  187.         - Create/Edit/Delete custom 20 character volume name.
  188.       For Folders:
  189.         - Rename folder (with TOS 1.4 or greater)
  190.       For Files:
  191.         - Rename file
  192.         - Update file's modification date and time to current system date
  193.           and time.
  194.         - Toggle file status between Read/Write and Read Only modes.
  195.  
  196.   o New "Format Floppy..." command which:
  197.       - Single or Double sided disks.
  198.       - Choose from 79 to 82 tracks per side.
  199.       - 9 or 10 sectors per track.
  200.       - Twister Format (with TOS 1.2 or greater).
  201.       - Formats with complete verification of disk, aborts on any bad
  202.         sectors (unlike the built-in GEM desktop).
  203.       - All disks are formatted with the correct MS-DOS boot sector
  204.         information so that they will work under PC-Ditto or on a PC.
  205.       - Reports track, side, and drive while formatting.
  206.       - Format may be aborted at any point.
  207.  
  208.   o Enhanced "Show as Text" command:
  209.       - Much, much faster than the built-in GEM desktop.
  210.       - Turn on/off the file date display.
  211.       - Turn on/off the file time display.
  212.       - Turn on/off the file size display.
  213.       - Choose between two text sizes (standard size and small text).
  214.       - Turn on/off multiple column displays.
  215.  
  216.   o "No Sort" option which allows you to see in what order files and folders
  217.      are physically stored on the disk.  Very useful for arranging AUTO
  218.      folder programs and desk accessories.
  219.     
  220.   o New "Select Template..." command which allows the user to select a 
  221.      file template to the used to sort the files and folders in the selected
  222.      window.  For example, "*.ACC" would be used to find all the accessories
  223.      in a window.
  224.       - Can use any combination of wildcards and letters.
  225.       - Toggle between folders using the template or not.
  226.       - Have a different template for each open window.
  227.  
  228.   o Enhanced "Install Desktop Icon...".
  229.       - No longer must an icon be selected for this command to work, unlike
  230.         the built-in desktop.
  231.       - Allows you to change any desktop icon's filename and character.
  232.       - Assign a unique character (A-Z,1-9) to file and program icons
  233.         which are on the desktop.  That way they can be executed (or opened)
  234.         directly from the keyboard.
  235.       - Can add duplicate desktop icons.
  236.  
  237.   o Modified "Install Application...".
  238.       - Changes the system path to the path of the installed application
  239.         when a file in a matching ending is selected.  This allows many
  240.         programs that did not work from the built-in desktop to now work
  241.         correctly. (like Word Writer and 1st Word Plus)
  242.       - Up to two file endings per application.

  244.   o New "Snap Icons to Grid..." command allows users to choose a grid size
  245.      to which to "snap" their desktop icons.

  247.   o Supports Environment Variables.  Users of compilers and other programs
  248.      requiring environment variables may now run those programs directly
  249.      from NeoDesk.  (Those same programs required a special text shell to
  250.      run correctly).

  252.   o New file "Status Displays" which appear during all file operations.
  253.       - Display the present file operation (Reading, Writing, Moving, or
  254.         Deleting)
  255.       - Display the current folder and file being operated on.
  256.       - Total number of folders and files remaining before the operation

  260.   o All file operations may be aborted/terminated at any time.

  280.   o Ability to completely customize NeoDesk:
  281.     - Choose the default file operation mode:
  282.       - Copy (keyboard toggle for Move)
  283.       - Move (keyboard toggle for Copy)
  284.       - Ask (computer will inquire which operation is desired)
  285.     - Choose if NeoDesk will confirm file copies/moves.
  286.     - Choose if NeoDesk will confirm file deletes.
  287.     - Choose if NeoDesk will display the file "status displays".
  288.     - Choose if NeoDesk will pause after all TOS (text based) applications
  289.       allowing the user to read the contents of the screen before they
  290.       are erased when one returns to the built-in desktop.
  291.     - Choose if NeoDesk will remain resident when one runs an application
  292.       or automatically unload (and reload) itself from memory.
  293.     - Choose an alternate path (other than the original boot path) for
  294.       NeoDesk to reload itself from.
  295.     - Choose a batch file interpreter.
  296.     - Choose a program to be automatically executed at bootup.
  297.     - Choose a maximum number of files per folder to be displayed.
  298.     - Choose a default "parameter" line for .TTP and .BTP programs.
