ANTIDOTE
Antidote is a virus killer kit which can be used to detect and kill viruses in
two different ways. Unlike all the other virus killers available, Antidote is a
desk accessory. This means that it is instantly available from the desktop or
from within any GEM-based program any time you require it.
BootSpy is also provided and this is an AUTO folder program that checks
your micro each time you boot up and reports if a virus is present on the disk
or in your ST. Antidote doesn't try to identify or name particular strains of
virus, it simply kills them. It does this by disabling any boot sector program
present on your disks.
How to use it
--------------
COPY ANTIDOTE.ACC and ANTIDOTE.RSC onto your boot disk and put BOOTSPY.PRG in
your AUTO folder. Boot up with this disk and BootSpy will check the boot
sector. At any time you can pull down the Desk menu and click on Antidote to
bring up the dialog box. Select drive A or B then click on Test Disk. If a
virus is found then click on Kill Virus. You can also double click on
BOOTSPY.PRG from the desktop to check a disk (it is best to rename it to a .TOS
file so that it clears the screen).
Problems
---------
Antidote only works with boot sector viruses. These seem to be the most common,
in fact, we haven't seen any other variety. Note that some disks are supposed
to have boot sector programs - for instance, all commercial games. If you try
to kill these then you'll probably ruin the disk so take care.
BOOTSPY.PRG and ANTIDOTE.ACC will only kill a virus as long as the disk is
not write protected. If the micro is infected then as soon as you kill the
virus on the disk, the virus in the micro might re-infect it. Switch off, then
switch on without a disk in the drive. Wait for the desktop to appear, then run
BOOTSPY.PRG.
REMEMBER!
----------
This virus killer will destroy all boot sector programs - viruses and arcade
games, too! Take care not to destroy your games' boot sectors, but you can
freely destroy any others you find on your other disks, like 1st Word Plus,
Degas Elite, general work disks, PD disks (not bootable demos) and so on.
