MULTI-FORMATTER
The voluptuous Ms Murray presents yet another sparkling desk accessory
"Not another formatter!", I hear you cry, however, this one is far better than
any of the others you may have. It will, for instance, format both ST and PC
disks in a variety of ways, and also speed up disk accessing by as much as 40%.
Multi-formatter is provided as a desk accessory so that it can be used from
within any Gem-based program. Pull down the accessory menu, click on
Multi-formatter and up pops a dialogue box.
Select either drive A or B, single or double sides, 9 or 10 sectors per
track and 80 or 81 tracks. (More options could easily have been added, but the
disks become unreliable outside these limits). Now click on either the "Format
ST disk" or "Format PC disk" buttons to format the disk.
FORMATTING AN ST DISK
----------------------
If you want to increase the storage capacity of your disks then choose 10
sectors per track and 81 tracks. This gives you 818k free space, an increase of
92k over standard Atari format disks. (Some people claim to format 82 or even
83 tracks, but it's unreliable and we wouldn't put anything valuable on those
extra tracks - you might never get it back!).
Choose a nine sector format if you want to speed up disk accessing - you
can make the ST's drives run up to 40% faster than normal. If you have an old
ST with 1985 TOS/GEM roms (look at the Gem desktop copyright message) then
you'll notice a tremendous increase in speed. More recent versions of TOS/GEM
have a better formatter that speeds up disk accessing slightly. Multi-formatter
produces an even faster disk format, but the difference in speed will be less
noticeable.
Normally when the ST writes to a disk it verifies the data it has written,
but this is unnecessary and slows the whole process down. It also uses a step
rate of 3ms. By switching off write verification and reducing the step rate to
2ms writing to disks is speeded up (it then becomes as fast as reading),
without any loss of reliability. An extra utility called SPEEDDSK.PRG has been
provided to set these parameters. Either double click on it from the Desktop or
put it in the AUTO folder on your boot disk for convenience.
FORMATTING A PC DISK
---------------------
Many PC's now use 3.5in disks - 5.25in ones are being slowly phased out - so
Multi-formatter can format disks that can be used in a PC. What's more, the ST
can read and write to them just like an ST formatted disk. So the ST thinks
they are standard ST disks and a PC thinks they're standard PC disks. This
means you can easily swap data and program files between the ST and PC.
Format a PC disk using Multi-formatter, save your word processor text file
in Ascii form, pop the disk into a PC, load up the text file into a PC word
processor and cary on typing! Alternatively, if you have a PC emulator then
format a PC disk with Multi-formatter, pop it into a PC and copy your word
processor onto it. Now you can either work on the PC or on the ST using your PC
emulator.
We aren't too sure how flexible the PC disk operating system is, so
whatever format you select the disk will be 80 track with 9 sectors per track
and with the speed-up option set. We haven't found a PC that couldn't cope with
this.
